Alun Lewis (1915-1944) was one of the few great British writers of the Second World War. His early death at the age of twenty-eight robbed Wales of its most promising poet and story writer. Although he had been writing since an early age, becoming a soldier had a stimulating effect on Lewis's writing: his first book of poems, Raiders' Dawn, was published in 1942, and The Last Inspection, a collection of stories, appeared in the same year, alerting critics and editors to the arrival of a new war writer. Both books are characterised by vivid realism and emotional power.Later in 1942 Lewis's new regiment, the South Wales Borderers, travelled to India. His experiences there are recreated in the beautiful poems of Ha! Ha! Among the Trumpets and the stories and letters of In the Green Tree. On the reputation of these four books Alun Lewis is widely seen, with Keith Douglas, as the outstanding writer of World War Two.Collected Stories reprints the war stories in their entirety for the first time. It also collects stories published in student magazines and newspapers such as The Guardian, together with several previously unseen. In bringing together all this material, editor Cary Archard shows Lewis's development from remarkable schoolboy writer to mature and established author whose stories appeared in magazines such as Horizon and Lilliput. "... one of the mightiest poets and fiction writers of the twentieth century... a superb Collected Stories" Richard Simpson, Tar River Poetry"So lyrical, so larky, that, almost unconsciously, one starts to read them aloud to an empty room"Sunday Times"Each story is a gem, full of wise understanding of human experience, and deeply moving"PN Review"Stories of such artistry that one is inclined to reread them immediately to savour the moments they capture" Publishers' WeeklyAlun Lewis (1915-1944), the remarkable poet and short story writer, died, aged twenty-eight, in Burma in the Second World War. Some critics see him as the last of the great Romantic poets, a twentieth century Keats. Others describe his poetry as the path from pre-war Yeats and Auden to post-war poets like Hughes and Gunn. In Wales there are those who think his greater versatility and finer intelligence place him above his contemporaries Dylan Thomas and R.S. Thomas.

Two Centuries of Lewis and Clark

Two Centuries of Lewis and Clark

The landscape encountered by the Corps of Discovery during their multi-year, cross- country trek to the Pacific was dramatically different from the one that greeted visitors attending Portland's Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905 or the one that exists in the Pacific Northwest today. On the occasion of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the centennial of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, the time is ripe for reconciling those earlier events with present-day activities. In Two Centuries of Lewis and Clark, William L. Lang and Carl Abbott have collaborated to address those issues. Lang scrutinizes the motivations for the Lewis and Clark expedition and the environmental ramifications of its discoveries on the people and the landscape of the Columbia River Basin. Abbott examines the ways in which the Lewis and Clark Exposition advanced President Jefferson's goal of developing the economic potential of the Pacific Northwest, particularly through the exploitation of the region's abundant natural resources.

A skillful balance of application and theory, Budgeting: Politics and Power, Second Edition, is a comprehensive yet highly accessible introduction to the politics of budgeting. Unlike other texts on the subject--which typically focus only on budgeting issues at the federal level--this book emphasizes budgeting at the state and local levels in order to translate budgetary politics in a way that is more relevant to the vast majority of students. Drawing on a wide range of academic disciplines, the book also incorporates numerous pedagogical features, including case studies, in-class exercises, discussion and review questions; many charts, tables, photos, and cartoons; a glossary of budgeting terms; and an appendix of key federal budgeting points. A Companion Website at www.oup.com/us/lewis offers links to videos, chronologies, other online resources, and more.

No matter who we are in the body of Christ, how anointed we are or how long we have been in Christ, we all have something common. Something that does not consider doctrine, teaching practices or messages; it is our bodies. We all have physical bodies, whatever condition they may be in. Our tendency is to focus on our spiritual bodies; however, in this book, I show you the power that we can only exercise in this physical body, not after we have gone to heaven. Our physical bodies have a direct link to how we move and operate in the spiritual realm. I look at the importance of the physical body according to the Word of God and explain in depth its sanctification. There are 6 major physical areas, which we are told in the Word of God to take care of. You will be amazed how something we regard as insignificant or only for the few is actually a general mandate for all of us to function and operate better in our spirits, souls, and bodies. Though this book approaches the body from a biblical perspective, the principle in Chapter 4 applies to every human body.

Integrating Clinical Aromatherapy in Palliative Care

Integrating Clinical Aromatherapy in Palliative Care

Carol Rose; Rhiannon Lewis

JESSICA KINGSLEY PUBLISHERS

pokkari
By bridging the gap between conventional medical interventions and complementary approaches using aromatherapy, palliative care nurse and clinical aromatherapist, Carol Rose, demonstrates how an integrated and evidence-based approach can have the most significant impact on quality-of-life in patients with life-limiting illness.Aromatherapy is already a fundamental practice in many palliative care settings but its benefits remain under-researched and under-represented. Each chapter of this book incorporates a person-centred focus to consider the integration of various aromatherapy approaches for a range of end-of-life symptoms, alongside conventional medical options. The specificity of this approach and the emphasis of empowering patients to be involved in the process of choosing oils and applications, allows for improved results in the palliation of common symptoms.Integrating Clinical Aromatherapy in Palliative Care has a foundation in research from the patient's point of view. The result is a fresh perspective that prioritises support of patient choices, skilful communication and individualised care, alongside the judicious use of essential oils and other botanical products. Collectively, aromatherapy can completely reframe holistic care to allow for greater emotional, social and spiritual expression.

A prolific American writer, Constance Cary Harrison's adaptation was one of three published versions in Charles Dodgson's lifetime. Originally growing out of a need to entertain hospitalized children, Harrison refined her manuscript and with Dodgson's permission published the play in 1890 in DeWitt's Acting Plays. It became a staple of theaters at the turn of the last century and was the basis for the 1931 film from Metropolitan Studio.
