First published in 1967. This volume looks at the voyages of Americo Vespucio, to use the Spanish form of the name Amerigo Vespucci, who sailed to the West under the Spanish flag in 1499 and again in 1501 when he sailed to gain geographical information for the King of Portugal who like the King of Spain had been confused by the contradictory reports of Columbus. Columbus to his death believed that he had landed in Asia and not the Americas. Americo discovered the Amazon and the Para Rivers and explored over 6000 miles of continuous shoreline between Venezuela, which he named and a harbour about fifty degrees south on the coast of Argentina. In 1502 he presented 'proof' of the existence of the 'New World'. Americo crossed the Atlantic Ocean and found out and reported what was really there, naming the continent America from the Latin version of his name.
First published in 1966- The history of a foreign policy is not the same thing as the biography of a Foreign Minister. The former aims at showing what a foreign policy was, the latter at what a Foreign Minister was. The latter is pure biography, while this book aims at placing the individual in his proper relation to other diplomatic personalities and to events. The book shows in general a hearty approval of the spirit of nationality, and Temperley writes with patriotic fervour when he defends the British attack on Copenhagen during Canning's first career as a Foreign Minister in 1807 and this fervour is expanded in this research work.
First Published in 1966. The Calendar, which appeared between March 1925 and July 1927, was able to spread its influence much more widely than its present lack of reputation would suggest. It had much to do with the growth of the modern movement in criticism. By 1920, the old literary establishment had been almost entirely ousted by the younger generation that had been coming into prominence since about 1910. This title aims to showcase that, during this short period of existence, The Calendar of Modern Letters published some of the best criticism to appear in any literary review since the decline of the great politico-literary reviews of the nineteenth century.
First Published in 1971. When, in the spring of 1853, Harriet Beecher Stowe landed in Liverpool at the beginning of her first triumphal tour of the British Isles, one of the first people she met was Sir George Stephen. It was, in its way, a symbolic encounter. Both were second generation abolitionists whose whole lives had been intimately linked with the progress of the anti-slavery causes in their respective countries. This is a collection of seventeen letters Sir Stephen write to Mrs Beecher Stowe.
