Fenner and White's Medical Virology, Fifth Edition provides an integrated view of related sciences, from cell biology, to medical epidemiology and human social behavior. The perspective represented by this book, that of medical virology as an infectious disease science, is meant to provide a starting point, an anchor, for those who must relate the subject to clinical practice, public health practice, scholarly research, and other endeavors. The book presents detailed exposition on the properties of viruses, how viruses replicate, and how viruses cause disease. These chapters are then followed by an overview of the principles of diagnosis, epidemiology, and how virus infections can be controlled. The first section concludes with a discussion on emergence and attempts to predict the next major public health challenges. These form a guide for delving into the specific diseases of interest to the reader as described in Part II. This lucid and concise, yet comprehensive, text is admirably suited to the needs of not only advanced students of science and medicine, but also postgraduate students, teachers, and research workers in all areas of virology.

In this sensitive work, Whyte examines issues and ambiguities within Bonhoeffer’s writing—as well as complexities in his biography—that imply gaps in his understanding of the full theological implications of Christ’s solidarity with suffering. Whyte explores how, whilst Bonhoeffer ardently opposed white supremacist oppression enacted by the National Socialists, he also evidenced persistent entanglement with white supremacist logics and primary longings. Bonhoeffer scholars who ignore, miss, or dismiss these entanglements display vulnerability to those same logics. This book engages with a wide range of thinkers, including: Reggie Williams, Lisa Dahill, Michael Mawson, Katie Cannon, Gustavo Gutiérrez, and Keri Day. It also considers the distinct responses to white supremacy offered in the early 20th Century by Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church, and the leadership of the Azusa Street Revival as evidence that Bonhoeffer’s view was not the only theological ‘view from below’. Ultimately, Whyte offers a constructive theological ethical method for repentance away from white supremacy that builds on, critiques, and moves beyond Bonhoeffer. This method seeks to overcome the primary longings at the root of white supremacy to better resist the manifestations of white supremacist in our day. This work honors Bonhoeffer whilst seeking to go further along the paths of repentance he walked by addressing issues he did not consider.

For almost a hundred years, Hadrian Marlowe has served the Empire in its war against the Cielcin, a vicious alien race bent on humanity's destruction. Rumors of a new king amongst the Cielcin have reached the Imperial throne. This one is not like the others. It does not raid borderworld territories, preferring precise, strategic attacks on the humans' Empire. To make matters worse, a cult of personality has formed around Hadrian, spurred on by legends of his having defied death itself. Men call him Halfmortal. Hadrian's rise to prominence proves dangerous to himself and his team, as pressures within the Imperial government distrust or resent his new influence. Caught in the middle, Hadrian must contend with enemies before him--and behind. And above it all, there is the mystery of the Quiet. Hadrian did defy death. He did return. Canada's multiculturalism stops where most newsrooms begin. Despite recent efforts to increase diversity in the news, people of colour are often presented as clichés – from freeloading immigrants to keepers of exotic cultures – rather than individuals with complex stories.Instead of treating diversity like a missing ingredient – simply add one racialized reporter and the problem is solved – journalist Christopher Cheung wants newsrooms to change how they cover stories. In this candid investigation into the state of race in Canadian media today, Cheung challenges the way we think about the news we read, watch, and listen to. Real stories from recent years are examined for successes or how they fall short on representation. Cheung shows us why reporting on race is necessary, how the language is evolving, and why intersectionality is crucial to combatting stereotypes.Under the White Gaze is essential reading for aspiring and seasoned journalists, media consumers, and anyone wondering why race and representation are so often missing from our headlines.

White Collar Fictions

Christopher P. Wilson

At the turn of the twentieth century, representations of “white collar” Americans—the “middle” social strata H. L. Mencken ridiculed as boobus Americanus—took on an ever-greater prominence within American literature and popular culture. Magazines like the Saturday Evening Post idolized businessmen and “average Americans,” while books like Winesburg, Ohio and Babbitt produced new portraits of “middle America.” In White Collar Fictions, Christopher P. Wilson explores how these white collar representations became part and parcel of a new social class coming to terms with its own power, authority, and contradictions. By investigating the material experience and social vocabularies within white collar life itself, Wilson uncovers the ways in which writers helped create a new cultural vocabulary—“Babbittry,” the “little people,” the “Average American”—that served to redefine power, authority, and commonality in American society. An innovative study that integrates literary analysis with social history, White Collar Fictions reexamines the life and work of Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, and such nearly forgotten authors as O. Henry, Edna Ferber, Robert Grant, and Elmer Rice.

The first print edition of this book is now a cult classic. The author is a highly respected photographer within popular culture, with a diverse following. The book is the first to document the American punk scene to the public at large and now represents the epitome of the scene at the time. Features photographs of artistic and performance luminaries such as Man Ray, Tennessee Williams, Mick Jagger, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Zandra Rhodes, Divine, Lance Loud, and Marilyn Chambers, among others. With the publication of his seminal 1977 book, White Trash, Christopher Makos burst on to the photography scene and made a name for himself as the first photographer to record the convergence of the "uptown" and "downtown" worlds, as Debbie Harry fondly remembers. This raw, beautiful volume chronicled the punk scene as it came of age on the streets of New York. Interspersed in the mix are portraits of boldface names, including Andy Warhol, Man Ray, Tennessee Williams, Halston, John Paul Getty III, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Zandra Rhodes, Divine, Lance Loud, and Marilyn Chambers, among others. While the first book was a throwaway, this version, produced some forty years later, is being presented as an extremely collectable art book, now recognised as a classic in the world of pop culture photo photography.

The gangs that have arisen, as the regular government continues to fall apart, are growing in strength and territory. It's getting harder for an honest trucker to find a load of freight to haul. Gangs and family disputes are bad enough, but the owners and customers of the White Star are beginning to realize that they may have a little more trouble on the way. There are tensions gathering around the old truck stop, and the source is something very far outside the experience of even the most widely traveled trucker or the most experienced innkeeper.

Breaking away from prevailing views of dementia that rely heavily on the role of the cerebral cortex, the new perspective put forth here highlights white matter-cognition relationships, presenting an expanded view of dementia and its neurobiological origins. Based on detailed patient observations, extensive clinical research and an exhaustive literature review, this book discusses the novel concept of white matter dementia, offering hope for better understanding and treatment of dementing illness. Covering topics such as white matter neurobiology, mild cognitive dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease, the author reconsiders brain-behavior relationships and expands the concept of dementia, discussing implications for diagnosis, treatment (medical, surgical, rehabilitative, and psychiatric) and therapeutic innovations aimed at prevention of white matter damage and restoration of myelin. This unique book is an absolute must-have for all medical specialists and consultants in neurology, neuropsychiatry, and neuropsychology involved with the growing challenge of dementia.

White Lies considers African-American bodies as the site of cultural debates over a contested "white religion" in the United States. Rooting his analysis in the work of W.E.B. DuBois and James Baldwin, Christopher Driscoll traces the shifting definitions of "white religion" from the nineteenth century up to the death of Michael Brown and other racial controversies of the present day. He engages both modern philosophers and popular imagery to isolate the instabilities central to a "white religion," including the inadequacy of this framing concept as a way of describing and processing death. The book will be of interest to students and scholars interested in African-American Religion, philosophy and race, and Whiteness Studies.

Interweaving academic theory, (auto)ethnography, and memoir-styled narrative, Christopher M. Driscoll explores what the “white devil” trope means for understanding and responding to tensions emerging from toxic white masculinity. The book provides a historical and philosophical account of the “white devil” as it appears in the stories and myths of various black religious and philosophical traditions, particularly as these traditions are expressed through the contemporary cultural expression of hip-hop. Driscoll argues that the trope of the white devil emerges from a self-hatred in many white men that is concealed (and revealed) through various defence mechanisms – principally, anger – and the book provides rich ground to discuss the relationship between perceptions of self (i.e. who we are), emotional regulation, and our behaviour towards others (i.e. how we act).

Colleges across the country, and the nation as a whole continue to be divided along racial lines. White Out: Understanding White Privilege and Dominance in the Modern Age is about the role of Whiteness and a defense of White dominance in an increasingly diverse society. Whiteness is socially constructed, just as race is undoubtedly a social construct, documented through various periods in history. This book proposes that White Out is a learned habit that serves to defend White dominance in a multicultural age. White Out is a strategy that covers systems, dispositions, and actions that cannot cover the full indentation or impact. However, the action of blotting, either intentional or unintentional, serves to obscure experiences of people of color in lieu of a competing definition of reality. The authors introduce the White Architecture of the Mind as a metaphor highlighting the mind as a collection of walls, doors, windows, and pathways that influence individuals to react based on a systemic logic that was socially constructed reason. White Out, a byproduct of a White architecture of the mind, is a set of individual actions, choices, behaviors, and attitudes that are guided by a system that predisposes these attitudes and perpetuates privilege for core members of a dominant majority. The often-unconscious purpose in denying privilege and articulating colorblind ideology is to support a larger system and view of reality. The concepts covered in this volume include: White Pain, Whitefluenza (privilege as a virus), White 22 (White if you do, White if you don’t), Whitrogressions, Angry White Men, White Pilgrims, and Good White Friends.

Two fundamental and underlying principles drive White Evolution. The first is that evolution means constant movement in the fight against the virus of White supremacy. If the virus is evolving rapidly, then our critical consciousness needs to evolve faster in order to outpace the supremacy. The second is that this evolution is not an individual act—it must be done in community. The genetic makeup of human beings points to the necessity of interdependence. Growth and development do not lead to a solitary life so much as to being a dependable person rooted in community. The origin of White supremacy, on the other hand, is in reproducing uniformity and eradicating diversity. In an ecological framework, uniformity and monoculture is harmful to an ecosystem that needs diversity of thought, creativity, culture, perspective, history, and economy to survive. The White supremacy intended to "preserve the race" has created an enduring system of violence against people of color and is simultaneously hurting the endurability of humanity in exchange for the immediate gains of supremacy. The book, White Evolution, recounts the historical movement toward supremacy and casts the possibility of a White evolution toward racial justice through collective critical consciousness. The constant struggle for racial consciousness has no arrival point. White consciousness will never be woke because there is no past tense and no plateau. When privilege and supremacy are akin to a constantly evolving and insidious virus (Whitefluenza), and the antidote is to outpace White evolution for supremacy with a White evolution for racial justice. This is not an individual task, but rather a systemic redesign and reconstruction of social systems and requiring the cultivation of a collective critical consciousness. White Evolution covers a great deal of historical detail and contemporary examples to explain and explore new possibilities for recognizing the importance of interdependence of humanity.
