From the jungles of Vietnam to the unforgiving deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq, one breed of soldier has achieved legendary status in the arena of combat--the sniper. From the authors of the classic sniper chronicle One Shot-One Kill comes a new generation of true tales from some of the most expert and deadly marksmen in the world. Meet Adelbert Waldron II, whose 109 confirmed kills in Vietnam made him the most successful sniper in American military history, and Tom "Moose" Ferran, who coined the term "Fetch ", whereupon the infantry would retrieve the sniper's dead quarry. Also included are stories from snipers in Beirut, the Bosnian conflict, and both wars with Iraq--including the feat of Sergeants Joshua Hamblin and Owen Mulder, who took down thirty-two enemy soldiers in a single day outside Baghdad in 2003. The military sniper has evolved into one of the most dangerous and highly-skilled warrior professions. They suffer through weather, terrain, and enemy action, lay unmoving for days on end, and take out their targets with unerring accuracy--proving that the deadliest weapon in any battle, anywhere in the world, is a single well-aimed shot.

For readers of American Sniper, the stirring account of a life of service by the ?father of the US Navy SEALs”One month after the Bay of Pigs fiasco, when President John F. Kennedy pressed Congress about America’s ?urgent national needs,” he named expanding US special operations forces along with putting a man on the moon. Captain William Hamilton was the officer tasked with creating the finest unconventional warriors ever seen. Merging his own experience commanding Navy Underwater Demolition Teams with expertise from Army Special Forces and the CIA, and working with his subordinate, Roy Boehm, he cast the mold for sea-, air-, and land-dispatched night fighters capable of successfully completing any mission anywhere in the world. Initially, they were used as a counter to the potential devastation of nuclear war, and later for counterterrorism and hostage rescue. His vision led to the formation of the celebrated SEAL Team 6. In this stirring, action-filled book, Hamilton tells his story for the first time.Night Fighter is a trove of true adventure from the history of the late twentieth century, which Hamilton lived, from fighter pilot in the Korean War to operative for the CIA in Vietnam, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, from the Pentagon to Foggy Bottom, and from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Reagan White House’s Star Wars. Like American Sniper, here is the record of a life devoted to patriotic service.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

We are partakers of Godthrough the Holy Spirit. In God, we are made fully human, the image of Christ-the glory of God.As the ancient Celts knew, the most glorious journey is the one that brings us into the unexplored regions of our spiritual lives. The journey may lead through forests and along seacoasts, through pastureland and city streets; it is lit by the beaming sun, the silvery cycle of the moon's phases, and the spangle of starshine. The same journey also leads us deeper into our own hearts, into the hidden recesses of our consciousness-and the journey leads as well into encounters with other beings, where we are challenged to release our ego's demands even as we see Divinity looking back at us from another's eyes. For that is the goal of this journey-to deepen our awareness of the Divine Presence in Creation, within ourselves, in our relationships, and in our communities."This book is rooted in the Bible and in Jesus Christ, but its words are never secondhand. This book is also rooted in the birds, in Nature, and in the world of the Spirit. It will inspire you to explore untrodden places in your life."-Ray Simpson, author of The Way of Life for the Third Millennium and The Celtic Book of Days: Ancient Wisdom for Each Day of the Year from the Celtic Followers of Christ

Our work becomes meaningful, and our relationships become powerful. With Sims and Robertson as guides, discover the transformative power of discipleship environments. Creating Space offers practical guidance on how to create environmentswhere disciples of Jesus can truly thrive and multiply. Drawing from decades of ministry experience, the authors explore the challenges facing the modern church and provide acompelling vision for nurturing authentic, passionate spiritual disciples who embody the love and mission of Jesus. The book emphasizes the importance of deep listening, accountable relationships, and intentional disciple-making environments that can ignite a movement of spiritual renewalwithin churches and communities.Through biblical wisdom, powerful narratives, and actionable tools, Creating Space equips leaders and laypeople alike to shift from maintaining programs to fostering transformative relationships.

Asserting that written language is on the verge of its greatest change since the advent of the printing press, visual artist Craig McDaniel and art historian Jean Robertson bring us Spellbound – a collection of heavily illustrated essays that interrogate assumptions about language and typography. Rethinking the alphabet, they argue, means rethinking human communication. Looking beyond traditional typography, the authors conceive of new languages in which encoded pictorial images offer an unparalleled fusion of art and language. In a world of constant technological innovation offered by e-books, tablets, cell phones and the Internet, McDaniel and Robertson demonstrate provocatively what it would mean to move beyond the alphabet we know to a wholly new system of written communication.

Allan Ramsay (1684–1758) is a key figure in Scottish cultural history. His collections of Scottish poetry were received with great acclaim, and did much to establish the status of Scots as a literary language – inspiring later writers such as Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, and James Hogg. His Tea-Table Miscellany is a foundational collection of Romantic song, and his play The Gentle Shepherd, first published in 1725, was reprinted more than one hundred times and was regularly performed around the world for nearly two centuries. He also founded Britain’s first circulating library; Edinburgh’s Academy of St Luke, Britain’s first Art School; and Scotland’s first permanent theatre. Ramsay’s impact on Scottish culture spans a variety of subject areas, including Drama, English, History, and Music. This Scotnote takes an interdisciplinary approach and allows pupils, teachers, and interested readers to see the cross-subject links and to use the suggested activities to build a more comprehensive view of Ramsay’s life and work.
Psychosis: Global Perspectives

Psychosis: Global Perspectives

Oxford University Press

Psychotic disorders are a major public health challenge. Psychoses are associated with significant individual, familial, and societal costs. Yet, our understanding of these conditions is limited because the overwhelming majority of research is conducted in a small number of countries in North America, Europe, and Australasia, which together comprise only around 16% of the world's population. There are consequently substantial gaps in our knowledge of psychoses, and the need for a global perspective is obvious. Psychosis: Global Perspectives comprises two parts: In the first half of the book, the authors review the current evidence base on psychoses around the world by theme, from epidemiology to human rights, highlighting commonalities and differences between settings and illustrating the gaps in our knowledge. The second half of the book synthesises existing research from nine countries in the Global South, providing detailed accounts of ongoing research programmes, local treatment systems, and cultural contexts, and contrasting these with theory and data generated from the Global North. Together, these sections illustrate how experiences of psychosis may be shaped by social context, and the importance of diversifying the settings in which research on psychosis is conducted. Academically rigorous yet accessibly written, this new title addresses the substantial inequalities in literature and attention in the global understanding of psychotic disorders.
