Spin-Based Computing Devices

Spin-Based Computing Devices

György Csaba

Springer International Publishing AG

This book provides readers with a single-source reference to the state of the art in domain-wall, nanomagnet and spin-wave-based computing devices, enabling them to provide additional computing functions and lower the power consumption of electronic devices by orders of magnitudes. Tutorial chapters gives a thorough introduction to the preliminaries and the theory behind spin-based devices, and additional chapters give an overview of the most promising spin-based computing concepts. This book is designed to be a ‘first read’ for anyone interested in the field of spin-based (magnetic) computing devices. The author provides an overview of how information can be processed by single-domain nanomagnets, domain walls, spin-waves or spin torque oscillators. Both Boolean approaches (magnetic logic gates) and non-Boolean devices (image processing circuits, etc.) are discussed.

In one sense, the problem of finding the densest packing of congruent circles in a square is easy to understand. But on closer inspection, this problem reveals itself to be an interesting challenge of discrete and computational geometry with all its surprising structural forms and regularities. This book summarizes results achieved in solving the circle packing problem over the past few years, providing the reader with a comprehensive view of both theoretical and computational achievements. Typically illustrations of problem solutions are shown, elegantly displaying the results obtained.Beyond the theoretically challenging character of the problem, the solution methods developed in the book also have many practical applications.Since the codes can be worked with directly, they will enable the reader to improve on them and solve problem instances that still remain challenging, or to use them as a starting point for solving related application problems.

The Iron Curtain lifted in 1989, and more than twenty nations emerged from the isolation that had largely hidden them from the rest of the world for more than four decades. In each of these former Soviet States, remnants of tradition and economic organization has prevented them from stepping out, beyond the curtain and onto the world stage. Regardless, some have been extremely successful. In Agriculture in Transition: Land Policies and Evolving Farm Structures in Post Soviet Countries authors Zvi Lerman, Csaba Csaki, and Gershon Feder study the land policies and farming infastructures of these newly emerging nations as components of institutional change in the rural sector - change from a centralized rural economy to a market-oriented economy. Their analysis of the policy, tradition, history, and social structure of these developing states pushes the discussion of economic transition beyond questions policy, planning, and implementation.

Decision-making in the face of uncertainty is a significant challenge in machine learning, and the multi-armed bandit model is a commonly used framework to address it. This comprehensive and rigorous introduction to the multi-armed bandit problem examines all the major settings, including stochastic, adversarial, and Bayesian frameworks. A focus on both mathematical intuition and carefully worked proofs makes this an excellent reference for established researchers and a helpful resource for graduate students in computer science, engineering, statistics, applied mathematics and economics. Linear bandits receive special attention as one of the most useful models in applications, while other chapters are dedicated to combinatorial bandits, ranking, non-stationary problems, Thompson sampling and pure exploration. The book ends with a peek into the world beyond bandits with an introduction to partial monitoring and learning in Markov decision processes.
