A Student's Guide to the Schrödinger Equation

A Student's Guide to the Schrödinger Equation

Daniel A. Fleisch

Cambridge University Press
2020
sidottu
Quantum mechanics is a hugely important topic in science and engineering, but many students struggle to understand the abstract mathematical techniques used to solve the Schrödinger equation and to analyze the resulting wave functions. Retaining the popular approach used in Fleisch's other Student's Guides, this friendly resource uses plain language to provide detailed explanations of the fundamental concepts and mathematical techniques underlying the Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics. It addresses in a clear and intuitive way the problems students find most troublesome. Each chapter includes several homework problems with fully worked solutions. A companion website hosts additional resources, including a helpful glossary, Matlab code for creating key simulations, revision quizzes and a series of videos in which the author explains the most important concepts from each section of the book.
A History of the Concept of God

A History of the Concept of God

A history of the concept of God through the lens of process thought.Daniel A. Dombrowski explores the history of the concept of God from the perspective of neoclassical, or process, theism. His neoclassical approach assuages the current crisis in philosophical theism, caught between a defense of classical theism and assertions of religious skepticism. Instead, the work offers Charles Hartshorne's notion of a God who always evolves, quite unlike the allegedly perfect figure of more traditional, and increasingly unsatisfactory, accounts. Dombrowski surveys the classical theists and their roots in ancient Greek philosophy before turning to contributions from the sixteenth through twentieth centuries, ultimately discussing twenty-three thinkers. The key figures in this history are Plato, who ironically provided the philosophical basis both for classical and neoclassical concepts, and three great figures in process theism: Henri Bergson, Alfred North Whitehead, and Hartshorne. The concept of God has a rich past; this book argues that it can have a rich future as well.

In a ceremony of discipleship called a bai see, the Dragons learn a part of Ming's history about which none of them were previously aware... including, apparently, the dragon himself. It is the Five Dragon Sword, and both it and its history are a mystery to Ming and Grandfather Chen. Before the truth behind the mystery can be discovered, the kids are introduced to a new student in their school, a pretty Korean girl named Joanie Chae, and they soon learn that Joanie has a secret of her own. When they are given the story of the Five Dragon Sword, the Dragons find that Joanie Chae and her grandfather, Yi Woosun, are tied to it more closely than they could have imagined. What follows is a trip to the past - fifteen centuries in the past - and taking them to ancient Korea, not only to learn about the sword, but to retrieve it from G kt rk brigands who have stolen it from the Silla king.
