Neville Chamberlain: Volume 1, 1869–1929

Neville Chamberlain: Volume 1, 1869–1929

Dilks David

Cambridge University Press
2002
pokkari
This is the first volume of a major two-volume biography of Neville Chamberlain (1869–1940), which matches his ample collection of private papers against the public records, and brings in from other collections of papers letters written to or by Chamberlain. This first volume tells the story of the first sixty years of Chamberlain’s life. As well as his role in national politics, it covers his endeavours to prove himself in a different sphere by building up his business concerns in Birmingham, and through service to the city. Chamberlain’s family letters and diaries are freely drawn upon. There is much material about Chamberlain’s personal relations with his half-brother Austen, Lloyd George, Baldwin and Churchill. Chamberlain is revealed as a figure of wide culture, many international connections, and much reserve in his personal dealings, but with astonishing energy and resourcefulness in administration and boldness in policy.

Collector's Guide to the Balmat Mining District

Collector's Guide to the Balmat Mining District

The Balmat Mining District in southern St. Lawrence County, New York, is a former mining site known among collectors for its highly prized minerals. For more than 100 years, it was one of the world's most important sources of talc and zinc. Because most of the zinc ore was crushed underground and brought to the surface for separation, only mineral specimens brought out by miners and geologists have survived. Outstanding specimens from both the talc and zinc mines, preserved in only a few collections, are featured in this book—many for the first time. Some of the fine specimens included are hexagonite, manganocummingtonite, groutite, calcite, sphalerite, and magnetite. With more than 200 photographs, this book is the first comprehensive description of the history, geology, and mineralogy of this important mining district.
