Scotland offers almost unique opportunities for medical historians. For a conventional history, there is a rich stock of famous doctors and their discoveries. There are also the contributions of four ancient universities and three equally old colleges of physicians and surgeons. For historians of public health there is the famous struggle against the problems of the industrial revolution and the lives and works of the great sanitary reformers in Glasgow and Edinburgh. For the social historian there are equal opportunities in the diversity of the health care in the Highlands and Lowlands, the rich traditions of Scottish folk medicine and the interactions of Scottish and English medical practice. Much else can be learnt in relating Scotland's great innovative periods to her cultural and political state at the time. It is perhaps surprising therefore that there are no up-to-date accounts of any of these aspects of health and health care in Scotland. . . . there are now many new sources available and new questions to be asked. -from the Introduction In this book, author David Hamilton explores new sources and evaluates the rich history of medicinal practices in Scotland. Thus, for historians both of medicine and of Scotland, this study is necessary to more fully understand the country's history.
A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle

A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle

With the rise of urban living and the digital age, many North American healers are recognizing that traditional medicinal knowledge must be recorded before being lost with its elders. "A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle" is a historic document, including nearly 200 color photos and maps, in that it is the first in which a native healer has agreed to open his medicine bundle to share in writing his repertoire of herbal medicines and where they are found. Providing information on and photos of medicinal plants and where to harvest them, anthropologist David E. Young and botanist Robert D. Rogers chronicle the life, beliefs, and healing practices of Medicine Man Russell Willier in his native Alberta, Canada. Despite being criticized for sharing his knowledge, Willier later found support in other healers as they began to realize the danger that much of their traditional practices could die out with them. With Young and Rogers, Willier offers his practices here for future generations. At once a study and a guide, "A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle" touches on how indigenous healing practices can be used to complement mainstream medicine, improve the treatment of chronic diseases, and lower the cost of healthcare. The authors discuss how mining, agriculture, and forestry are threatening the continued existence of valuable wild medicinal plants and the role of alternative healers in a modern health care system. Sure to be of interest to ethnobotanists, medicine hunters, naturopaths, complementary and alternative health practitioners, ethnologists, anthropologists, and academics, this book will also find an audience with those interested in indigenous cultures and traditions.

Healers Versus Stealers describes the never-ending desire of thieves to separate dentists from their money. Forensic CPA and private investigator David Harris peels away the mystery and misinformation surrounding embezzlement in dental practices. In the first half of this book, David profiles embezzlers in dental practices, exposes the rationalizations they use to justify what they know is wrong, shows a thief's decision process when they decide to steal from you, and outlines some key areas of vulnerability for practices. Then David lays out the simple, practical steps a practice owner can take to protect themselves against embezzlement, including an innovative and timesaving approach to financial oversight. This book is packed with nuggets that practice owners can put to work immediately that will help them recognize if they have an embezzlement issue and deal with it if they do.With almost three-quarters of dentists suffering embezzlement in their careers, this book should be on every practice owner's bookshelf.
Henley-on-Thames: A History

Henley-on-Thames: A History

David C Whitehead

For many people, especially occasional visitors or those who have never visited, the name Henley-on-Thames conjures up images of Henley Royal Regatta, of relaxed afternoons by the Thames, of large houses with spacious lawns. For its residents, and residents of the surrounding villages, the dominant images are more likely to be of traffic jams, narrow pavements, supermarkets and late-night brawls. As David Whitehead reveals in Henley-on-Thames: A History, both views are, of course, far from complete and tend to hide the reality of a working and commuter town with a character that reflects the impact of several centuries of history.

These words came in times of trial and heaviness. These words were not so much chosen by the writer as given by the Author; spoken by the One and listened to by the other. These words served to fill a need, heal a hurt, answer a question. May they go forth to do the same for any who might read them.
The Tale of Healer Miguel Perdomo Neira

The Tale of Healer Miguel Perdomo Neira

This new book tells the story of Miguel Perdomo Niera, a healer whose amazing cures during his travels through the northern Andes in the 1860s and 1870s evoked both enormous hostility and widespread adulation. A combination of narrative and analysis, the book documents Perdomo's experiences in Colombia and Ecuador and offers valuable insights into the social history of medicine during the Great Transformation in nineteenth-century Latin America. Reactions to Perdomo also illuminate the conflicts between colonial and modern and between religious and secular belief systems in Latin America during this time. This era pitted the norms of colonial Latin America against forces of change that shaped contemporary Latin America. Perdomo's practice of medicine demonstrated a strong religious influence that liberals thought were incompatible with a modern, secular society. Seldom have the contentions surrounding competitive medical systems been so starkly illuminated as in the case of Perdomo. One of a group of empirics, also known as cranderos, bleeders or barbers, who offered health care to people in Latin America, Perdomo did not charge for his services. Many people were perplexed by his cures. The drugs that he used allegedly enabled him to perform minor surgery without pain, swelling, or excessive bleeding. Supporters wrote numerous testimonials expressing their gratitude for his ability to cure illnesses that had plagued them for years. But Perdomo also had his detractors. Physicians, formally trained medicos, and those who supported scientific modernization were critical of Perdomo's practice of Hispanic medicine, even though it was part of the medical system of the day. Blending Catholic healing beliefs with indigenous and African medical ideologies, Hispanic medicine challenged the innovations occurring in the professional medical community. This volume also makes a singular contribution to a scholarly understanding of the emergence of medical pluralism, tracking the submergence of traditional
