Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease

David Oliver

Sheldon Press
2011
nidottu
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive condition that damages the nervous system, leaving muscles wasted and weak, and causing loss of mobility, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. MND tends to affect people over 40 and is most common between the ages of 50 and 70. There are about 5,000 people with MND at any one time in the UK. The cause remains a mystery and there is no cure. The third edition of this book gives a full update of treatments and resources available to help those diagnosed live life to the full. Topics include what the disease is, what the doctors will do, and how to cope with the difficulties. This new edition also examines possible dietary factors in causing the disease, the latest on benefits, and up to date thinking on drug trials. Dr David Oliver, a leading expert on MND, shows how to treat not just the physical effects but also the emotional ones for the whole family. Dr Oliver also explains the vital role of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Cognitive Neuroscience of Language

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language

Language is one of our most precious and uniquely human capacities, so it is not surprising that research on its neural substrates has been advancing quite rapidly in recent years. Until now, however, there has not been a single introductory textbook that focuses specifically on this topic.Cognitive Neuroscience of Language fills that gap by providing an up-to-date, wide-ranging, and pedagogically practical survey of the most important developments in the field. It guides students through all of the major areas of investigation, beginning with fundamental aspects of brain structure and function, and then proceeding to cover aphasia syndromes, the perception and production of speech, the processing of language in written and signed modalities, the meanings of words, and the formulation and comprehension of complex expressions, including grammatically inflected words, complete sentences, and entire stories.Drawing heavily on prominent theoretical models, the core chapters illustrate how such frameworks are supported, and sometimes challenged, by experiments employing diverse brain mapping techniques. Although much of the content is inherently challenging and intended primarily for graduate or upper-level undergraduate students, it requires no previous knowledge of either neuroscience or linguistics, defining technical terms and explaining important principles from both disciplines along the way.

Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms

Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms

Artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms both are areas of research which have their origins in mathematical models constructed in order to gain understanding of important natural processes. By focussing on the process models rather than the processes themselves, significant new computational techniques have evolved which have found application in a large number of diverse fields. This diversity is reflected in the topics which are subjects of the contributions to this volume. There are contributions reporting successful applications of the technology to the solution of industrial/commercial problems. This may well reflect the maturity of the technology, notably in the sense that 'real' users of modelling/prediction techniques are prepared to accept neural networks as a valid paradigm. Theoretical issues also receive attention, notably in connection with the radial basis function neural network. Contributions in the field of genetic algorithms reflect the wide range of current applications, including, for example, portfolio selection, filter design, frequency assignment, tuning of nonlinear PID controllers. These techniques are also used extensively for combinatorial optimisation problems.

Neuroendoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure whereby a neurosurgeon removes a tumour or cyst through small holes in the skull or through the mouth or nose. Neuroendoscopy enables neurosurgeons to access areas of the brain that cannot be reached by traditional surgery. This book is a guide to endoscopic neurological surgery procedures for neurosurgeons. Divided into sixteen sections, the text begins with an overview of the history of neuroendoscopy, endoscopic ventricular anatomy, endoscopes and instrumentation, and approaches to the ventricular system. The following chapters cover surgical techniques for different conditions. Each topic is divided into two parts with a current literature review and a “how to” section detailing the technique as a step by step process. The book concludes with discussion on risks and complications. Authored by a recognised, Texas-based expert in the field, the comprehensive text is further enhanced by clinical and surgical photographs and illustrations. Key points Comprehensive guide to endoscopic neurological surgery techniquesTopics provide “how to” guidance on the procedure and current literature reviewsAuthored by internationally recognised expert in the fieldHighly illustrated with clinical and surgical photographs

Neurology for the Hospitalist is a concise and eminently practical resource for inpatient neurological care. Internal Medicine Hospitalists frequently face patients with neurological issues and many feel that their training was insufficient in this area. Hospitalists are often the primary inpatient care providers for this patient population as many perceive Neurology to be an Internal Medicine subspecialty. Both new and experienced hospitalists will benefit from this handbook. In addition, medical students and residents will find this to be an excellent at the bedside resource. The format of the handbook allows one to quickly learn the differential diagnosis, appropriate testing, signs to watch for, and treatment strategies for the most frequently encountered neurologic conditions. Each topic covers commonly asked questions and elements that warrant close attention. For the hospitalist in particular, proposed quality metrics are given for major neurological diagnoses. No other book provides the hospitalist caring for patients with neurological issues the essential elements of that care in such a useable way. The focus is on practical information that will guide the best care.
