The Forgotten Zionist: The Life of Solomon (Sioma) Yankelevitch Jacobi

The Forgotten Zionist: The Life of Solomon (Sioma) Yankelevitch Jacobi

Cebon David; Rodney Benjamin

Independently Published

A fascinating story of one man s impact on history (Sir Martin Gilbert, historian; Honorary Fellow of Merton College, University of Oxford). Vladimir Jabotinsky and Sioma Jacobi exchanged more than five hundred letters between 1920 and 1939. Yet Jabotinsky's right-hand man, who ran the London Revisionist bureau from 1934 until his premature death at the age of forty-two, and who nearly single-handedly managed illegal immigration to Palestine, is virtually unknown. The Forgotten Zionist resurrects the legacy of a remarkable man and awards Solomon Sioma Jacobi his rightful place in Zionist history.

"One Day at a Time" is an inspirational story of David Sloan's battle against MS. This book is about using hope and attitude as weapons to fight through the mental gymnastics and roadblocks that MS created as Sloan's disease progressed. It features a step-by-step description of searching for answers that resulted in finally finding a label for his disabling symptoms. Sloan's life as a successful investment banker, always in control, gave way to learning that health and family were much more important than money and power when he finally retired on long term disability. His journey included traveling alone to Brazil where he spent time with a spiritual healer. This experience strengthened Sloan's resolve to never give up and use attitude to his advantage. Whoever he knows or meets has never met anyone with a stronger positive attitude. One can only understand his strength by learning about a similar battle with MS fought by Sloan's mom, who spent thirteen years in a nursing home yet never complained.

Following the bitterly contested election between Adams and Jefferson in 1800, the United States teetered on the brink of a second revolution. When Adams sought to prolong his policies in defiance of the electorate by packing the courts, it became evident that the new Constitution was limited in its powers. Change was in order and John Marshall stepped up to the challenge. The Great Decision tells the riveting story of Marshall and of the landmark court case, Marbury v. Madison , through which he empowered the Supreme Court and transformed the idea of the separation of powers into a working blueprint for our modern state. Rich in atmospheric detail, political intrigue, and fascinating characters, The Great Decision is an illuminating tale of America's formative years and the evolution of our democracy.
Routledge Revivals: Mark Twain as a Literary Comedian (1979)
Originally published in 1979, Mark Twain as a Literary Comedian looks at how Mark Twain addressed social issues through humour. The Southwest provided the subject for much of Twain’s writing, but the roots of his style lay principally in north-eastern humour. In the mid-1800s the northern United States underwent social changes that reflected in the writing of the literary humourists like Twain. Sloane argues that he used humour to describe conditions in the emerging middle-class urban experience and express his American vision and that Twain’s views on the human, social, and political conditions, presented through his fictional characters, elevated the use of literary humour in the American novel.

Routledge Revivals: The Literary Humour of the Urban Northeast 1830-1890 (1983)
The Literary Humour of the Urban Northeast brings together works by such writers as Mark Twain, P.T. Barnum, Marietta Holley, and the literary comedians Artemus Ward and Josh Billings. The northern writers chronicled a fast-moving world, dominated by government and business. In this anthology, David Sloane recovers satiric writings of the north-eastern humourists of the nineteenth century, a literary school that was formed in the crucible of the daily newspaper. Written to appeal to a newly urbanized audience experiencing the impact of the Industrial Revolution, these humorous articles, sketches and ballads responded to a rapidly changing nation still clinging to rural preconceptions but at the same time beginning to know a sharper more precarious kind of existence.

Keeping ahead of terrorists requires innovative, up-to-date training. This follow-up to Stephen Sloan's pioneering 1981 book, Simulating Terrorism, takes stock of twenty-first-century terrorism - then equips readers to effectively counter it. Quickly canvassing the evolution of terrorism - and of counterterrorism efforts - over the past thirty years, co-authors Sloan and Robert J. Bunker draw on examples from the early 2000s, following the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, to emphasize the need to prevent or respond quickly to ""active aggressors"" - terrorists who announce their presence and seek credibility through killing. Training for such situations requires realistic simulations - whose effectiveness, the authors show, depends on incorporating red teams; that is, the groups that play the part of active aggressors. In Red Teams and Counterterrorism Training, Sloan and Bunker, developers of simulation-driven counterterrorist training, take readers through the prerequisites for and basic principles of conducting a successful simulation and preparing responders to face threats - whether from teenage shooters or from sophisticated terrorist organizations. The authors clearly explain how to create an effective red team whose members can operate from within the terrorists' mindset. An innovative chapter by theater professional Roberta Sloan demonstrates how to use dramatic techniques to teach red teams believable role-playing.Rounding out this book, a case study of the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood illustrates the cost of failures in intelligence and underscores the still-current need for serious attention to potential threats. First responders - whether civilian or military - will find Red Teams and Counterterrorism Training indispensible as they address and deter terrorism now and in the future.

Co-Creative Placekeeping in Los Angeles is a novel examination of Los Angeles-based socially engaged art (SEA) practitioners’ equitable placekeeping efforts. A new concept, equitable placekeeping describes the inclination of historically marginalized community members to steward their neighborhood’s development, improve local amenities, engage in social and cultural production, and assert a mutual sense of self-definition—and the efforts of SEA artists to aid them.Emerging from in-depth interviews with eight Southern California artists and teams, Co-Creative reveals how artists engage community members, sustain relationships, and defy the presumption that residents cannot speak for themselves. Drawing on these artists and theoretical analysis of their praxes, the book explicates equitable community engagement by exploring not just the creative projects but also the underlying phenomena that inspire and sustain them: community, engagement, relationships, and defiance. What further sets this book apart is how it deviates from the conventional who and what of SEA projects to foreground the how and the why that inspire and necessitate collectively creative action.Co-Creative is for anyone studying arts-based community development and gentrification, given it complicates and enriches the current conversation about art’s undeniable and increasingly controversial role in neighborhood change. It will also be of interest to researchers and students of urban studies.
