The Biopolitics of Disability

The Biopolitics of Disability

David T. Mitchell

The University of Michigan Press
2015

In the neoliberal era, when human worth is measured by its relative utility within global consumer culture, selected disabled people have been able to gain entrance into late capitalist culture. The Biopolitics of Disability terms this phenomenon “ablenationalism” and asserts that “inclusion” becomes meaningful only if disability is recognized as providing modes of living that are alternatives to governing norms of productivity and independence. Thus, the book pushes beyond questions of impairment to explore how disability subjectivities create new forms of embodied knowledge and collective consciousness. The focus is on the emergence of new crip/queer subjectivities at work in disability arts, disability studies pedagogy, independent and mainstream disability cinema (e.g., Midnight Cowboy), internet-based medical user groups, anti-normative novels of embodiment (e.g., Richard Powers’s The Echo-Maker) and, finally, the labor of living in “non-productive” bodies within late capitalism.
Portraits of White Racism

Portraits of White Racism

David T. Wellman

First published in 1977, Portraits of White Racism advanced a distinctively sociological theory of racism. Based on five case histories, it critically assessed the prevailing social-psychological paradigm that equated racism with prejudice and provided an alternative interpretation. Racism, the book argued, could be understood as a culturally sanctioned strategy for defending social advantage based on race; it was not simply the product of psychological abnormalities. In this revised edition the theoretical perspective is updated, taking into account recent theorising in the sociology of racism.
Shadows of Empire

Shadows of Empire

David T. Garrett

The Indian nobility of the Andes - largely descended from the Inca monarchs and other pre-conquest lords - occupied a crucial economic and political position in late colonial Andean society, a position widely accepted as legitimate until the Túpac Amaru rebellion. Shadows of Empire traces the history of this late colonial elite and examines the pre-conquest and colonial foundations of their privilege and authority. It brings to light the organization and the ideology of the Indian nobility in the bishopric of Cusco in the decades before the rebellion, and uses this nobility as a lens through which to study the internal organization and tension of late colonial Indian communities. The work analyzes the significance of the collapse of the Indian nobility, both repudiated by the Indian commons and the crown in the last years of Spanish rule, following the rebellion to the emergence of the creole-dominated republican order after 1825.
America's Revival Tradition and the Evangelists Who Made It
The religious revival meeting has been a vital part of American culture from the colonial period to the present. Begun by Puritan preachers in the 17th century, it has persisted through the years and decades of our history. This book is about the evangelists who created and perpetuated that revival tradition--from Jonathan Edwards to Billy Graham and the televangelists of our day. The focus is on the evangelists and their unique contributions, but at the same time the book reveals the respective flaws of those dynamic preachers of the Christian gospel.

A Blue Voice Crying in the Wilderness of a Red State
The format and contents of this book are quite simple. There are three parts. Parts I and II consist of letters to the editor by the compiler--published letters in Part I and selected unpublished ones in Part II. The third part is an appendix that consists of an address the author and compiler presented to the Hemlock Society of San Diego on March 8, 2009. The book's contents will likely be controversial, since the writer lives in perhaps the Reddest of the Red states and his views in most instances are among the Bluest of the Blue--two main exceptions being the author's stand on illegal immigration and his approval of capital punishment for murderers. As for the appendix, it offers a strong argument in favor of "pulling the plug on Grandma," if she wants it pulled. In short, this book is sure to gladden the hearts of some and raise tempers to fever pitch in others.

The Trinity? That must be a totally out-of-date idea! By no means—it can be understood in terms of twenty-first century ideas. The doctrine of the Trinity is currently experiencing a revival in interest after a long period of neglect. However, there have been few attempts to present the doctrine in a way that will communicate to twenty-first century people. Many features of modern life are just those that relate to the issues that the Trinity deals with. The impact of modern science on faith, the search for sexual equality, the impersonality of modern life, are some of the issues that the doctrine relates to. A new formulation of the Trinity is presented, but not contrary to ancient formulations. Provocative? Hopefully, but from a desire to see the Trinity at the heart of Christian belief and practice.
