The Bipolar Professor: A Survivor's Story

The Bipolar Professor: A Survivor's Story

It was a death sentence. In 1975 acute promyelocytic leukemia killed virtually everyone it attacked. Everyone knew it but no one wanted to talk about it. I've read of families getting together and planning to have that last day. What kind of ceremony did they want, did they want to be buried or cremated? I didn't want to hear a word about it. Family and friends respected my wishes and not even a hint of these subjects ever came up. I had a plan and it was, were I going down, I was going down swinging. It's the only thing that sustained me in those days. Anger may well be part of what saved my life. I'd like to say I put on a brave face and happy disposition, The YNHH staff will tell you I did not. A hospital shrink had dubbed me the "angriest young man" she had ever met. No shit lady. She asked me "how are we doing this morning." I said, I'm dying, how are you? She never came back to visit. Of course, I was angry. Here I was a young man just starting college and just days ago believing I was in the best physical shape of my life. I had been happily courting coeds and here I was courting disaster - or rather disaster was courting me. No matter what I did I could not ease my restlessness, my insomnia, or depression but it would seem I was getting closer and closer to ending it once and for all. I simply did not want to exist anymore; it was all just too painful. The manic episodes - a source of excitement and creativity when I was younger - were increasing leading me to make choices that ended badly. Relationships with friends and family were becoming increasingly dysfunctional. Bipolar depression is almost impossible to describe. It's hard to understand if you haven't been the sun or looked into the abyss. Those of us who are Bipolar come to know depression as a living, breathing thing - itself devoid of light, sound, hope, will, desire, direction. Generally, only a manic episode will bring relief - the actual bliss when the weight is lifted, and your mind takes flight. I miss those times, even though they were brilliant on some days and terrifying on others. Before I understood what was going on, I would often refer to my life as a supernova - I would burn brightly for a time and then everything would implode.

"In the heart of the forest, a lively frog with a deep, croaky voice and a nimble cricket with a sweet, high chirp dream of creating the most enchanting choir the woods have ever heard. Together, they gather the sounds of rustling leaves, babbling brooks, and the songs of their fellow woodland friends to weave a melody that fills the night air with magic. But their harmony is threatened when Willie-a sly, troublesome creature-sets his sights on disrupting their project. To protect their dream, the frog and the cricket must join forces, blending their talents, courage, and friendship to outwit Willie and keep the music of the forest alive."

Deep in the heart of the meadow, where tall blades of grass swayed like emerald towers and the air hummed with life, there thrived a bustling community of insects and bugs of every shape, size, and color. Ants marched in steady lines, beetles polished their shimmering shells, dragonflies darted like jewels through the sunlight, and fireflies lit up the night like living lanterns. Life was good-until the day a terrible enemy cast its shadow over their peaceful home. This was no ordinary threat; it was cunning, relentless, and determined to take control of the meadow. Fear spread quickly through the insect kingdom, but so did determination. The ladybugs offered their keen eyes to spot danger from afar. The bees pledged their strength and strategy, ready to rally the troops. The spiders spun elaborate traps to slow the enemy's advance, while the butterflies carried urgent messages across the meadow. Even the smallest aphids and gnats found ways to contribute, proving that no role was too small when the fate of their home was at stake. For the first time in history, every bug, beetle, and butterfly stood side by side, each bringing their unique gifts and courage to the fight. Together, they would face the greatest challenge their meadow had ever seen-and discover that unity could transform even the tiniest of creatures into heroes.

Pipe Flow Provides detailed coverage of hydraulic analysis of piping systems, revised and updated throughout Pipe Flow: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide provides the information required to design and analyze piping systems for distribution systems, power plants, and other industrial operations. Divided into three parts, this authoritative resource describes the methodology for solving pipe flow problems, presents loss coefficient data for a wide range of piping components, and examines pressure drop, cavitation, flow-induced vibration, and other flow phenomena that affect the performance of piping systems. Throughout the book, sample problems and worked solutions illustrate the application of core concepts and techniques. The second edition features revised and expanded information throughout, including an entirely new chapter that presents a mixing section flow model for accurately predicting jet pump performance. This edition includes additional examples, supplemental problems, and a new appendix of the speed of sound in water. With clear explanations, expert guidance, and precise hydraulic computations, this classic reference text remains required reading for anyone working to increase the quality and efficiency of modern piping systems. Discusses the fundamental physical properties of fluids and the nature of fluid flowDemonstrates the accurate prediction and management of pressure loss for a variety of piping components and piping systemsReviews theoretical research on fluid flow in piping and its componentsPresents important loss coefficient data with straightforward tables, diagrams, and equationsIncludes full references, further reading sections, and numerous example problems with solution Pipe Flow: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide, Second Edition is an excellent textbook for engineering students, and an invaluable reference for professional engineers engaged in the design, operation, and troubleshooting of piping systems.
Ethics Management for Public and Nonprofit Managers
This practical book is dedicated to building ethical organizations. It has been written for college students preparing for careers in public service as well as for elected and appointed officials, administrators, and career public servants in the United States and elsewhere. Concise and comprehensive, Ethics Management for Public and Nonprofit Managers takes a managerial ethics approach to building and leading ethical public organizations. It includes: a discussion of the U.S. constitutional and administrative environment in which officials carry out their duties; descriptions and assessments of the tools available to elected and appointed officials who are committed to building ethical organizations; an overview of legislative and administrative measures taken by Congress, presidents, the judiciary, and the fifty states to foster ethical governance; unique coverage of ethics management around the world, with a focus on the US, Europe, and Asia; and hands-on skill-building exercises with active learning opportunities that conclude each chapter. This third edition includes a new chapter on ‘achieving ethical competence,’ exploring a wide range of ethical issues that confront public and nonprofit managers in their efforts to lead and build organizations of integrity. Examples and cases from both the public and the nonprofit sectors are incorporated throughout the third edition so that the book acts as a kind of ‘field guide’ for ethical behavior, with descriptions and assessments of the tools available to elected and appointed officials at every level. Accompanying the third edition text is a series of exercises that build ethical competence skills, asking the reader to judge the ethical competence of key actors in cases drawn from recent headlines.
