To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most successful actresses and singers in the history of show business,Hermes Press is proud to announce the publication of DORIS DAY - IMAGES OF A HOLLYWOOD ICON, featuring rare and previously unpublished photographs from the late star's personal collection.Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 3, 1922, Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff had dreams of becoming a professional dancer before a near-fatal car accident during her teen years left her bed-ridden with a shattered leg for over a year. While listening to the radio during her recovery and becoming entranced by jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, Doris embarked on singing lessons for two years, resulting in her becoming a local radio star and joining big bands -- where she adopted the stage name of "Day" -- leading to a plum position with the Les Brown Orchestra. While touring cross-country with Brown, Day had several hit records with the band, culminating with the end-of-World-War-II anthem Sentimental Journey. After two failed marriages and giving birth to her son Terry, Doris relocated to Los Angeles where she was discovered by famed film director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) and signed to a contract with Warner Brothers.Starting with the 1948 Technicolor musical Romance on the High Seas, where she introduced the Oscar®-nominated hit song It's Magic, Day quickly ascended to the top of the most popular stars in Hollywood. While continuing her recording career, she moved effortlessly between song-filled, nostalgic features such as Calamity Jane - introducing the Oscar®-winning hit Secret Love; gripping film noir (Storm Warning); musical biography (Love Me or Leave Me); a Hitchcock thriller (The Man Who Knew Too Much) and modern romantic comedies with Rock Hudson (Pillow Talk), Clark Gable (Teacher's Pet), Cary Grant (That Touch of Mink) and James Garner (The Thrill of It All).Despite not making a film since 1968, Day still holds the record as the number one female box-office star. Her many honors include the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry, the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Lifetime Achievement, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Academy Award® nomination for Pillow Talk and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her films and recordings continue to appeal to audiences all over the world. The iconic Oscar®-winning hit Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be) was not only the theme to her top ten television series The Doris Day Show but has resonated globally with several generations.A lifelong animal lover and pioneering animal welfare advocate, Day focused her later years on her heart's passion--making this a better world for animals and the people who love them. Her celebrity voice has been instrumental in reducing shelter euthanasia, introducing spay/neuter initiatives, lobbying for laws that protect animals, and many other programs. Since 1978, the Doris Day Animal Foundation has grown into a national non-profit animal welfare leader and continues to carry on Day's legacy.DORIS DAY - IMAGES OF A HOLLYWOOD ICON offers hundreds of photos, including glamorous publicity portraits, behind-the-scenes images with famous friends and colleagues, and glimpses into her personal life. Longtime fan Paul McCartney hascontributed a Foreword. Turner Classic Movies host Eddie Muller and singer-historian Michael Feinstein have contributed appreciations of Day's motion picture and singing careers, respectively. A complete filmography and discography are also included.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, after serving breakfast and turning his attention to laundry services aboard the USS West Virginia, Ship’s Cook Third Class Doris “Dorie” Miller heard the alarm calling sailors to battle stations. The first of several torpedoes dropped from Japanese aircraft had struck the American battleship. Miller hastily made his way to a central point and was soon called to the bridge by Lt. Com. Doir C. Johnson to assist the mortally wounded ship’s captain, Mervyn Bennion. Miller then joined two others in loading and firing an unmanned anti-aircraft machine gun—a weapon that, as an African American in a segregated military, Miller had not been trained to operate. But he did, firing the weapon on attacking Japanese aircraft until the .50-caliber gun ran out of ammunition. For these actions, Miller was later awarded the Navy Cross, the third-highest naval award for combat gallantry.Historians Thomas W. Cutrer and T. Michael Parrish have not only painstakingly reconstructed Miller’s inspiring actions on December 7. They also offer for the first time a full biography of Miller placed in the larger context of African American service in the United States military and the beginnings of the civil rights movement.Like so many sailors and soldiers in World War II, Doris Miller’s life was cut short. Just two years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller was aboard the USS Liscome Bay when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine. But the name—and symbolic image—of Dorie Miller lived on. As Cutrer and Parrish conclude, “Dorie Miller’s actions at Pearl Harbor, and the legend that they engendered, were directly responsible for helping to roll back the navy’s then-to-fore unrelenting policy of racial segregation and prejudice, and, in the chain of events, helped to launch the civil rights movement of the 1960s that brought an end to the worst of America’s racial intolerance.”

Written and drawn as dead-on homages to the styles of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Dick Ayers, these 20 stories recount Doris's encounters with such monsters as "Ner-Nee-Nah," "Spwum," "Ho-Chee-Cha," "X, Son of XI," and many more. But this is parody on a meta-level, as "editor" Rob Oder takes you behind the scenes and reveals the secrets behind these comics -- the chaos, the "faster-faster/cheaper-cheaper" mentality, the never-ending deadlines, the despicable treatment of writers and artists, the contempt for fans, the blithe disregard for quality -- all presented with an unctuous, sunny veneer of jocular "sophistication" to readers. And that's not all. Doris Danger: Giant Monsters Amok mixes its faux giant monster history with illustrations ("pin-ups ") of giant monsters by actual comic book artists who wanted in on the fun: Arthur Adams, Mike Allred, Mark Bode, Tim Bradstreet, Jeffrey Brown, Sal Buscema, Geof Darrow, Colleen Doran, Michael Golden, Irwin Hasen, Gilbert Hernandez, Mario Hernandez, Peter Kuper, Michael Lark, Jae Lee, David Mack, Dean Motter, Bill Plympton, Esad Ribic, Steve Rude, Bill Sienkiewicz, Chris Sprouse, William Stout, Herb Trimpe, and Thomas Yeates. We'll let Stan Lee have the last word: "Chris Wisnia has performed the amazing feat of taking the minor masterpieces that Jack Kirby and I had done and looking at them through a carnival's distorting mirror."

Followers of this chronicle may remember how Joseph's story, Polly on the Mopstick, concluded at 6.10pm on Monday, April 4th. 1881 with the three Kerwood brothers, Thomas, John and William finalising their first day of toil at their new callings at Olde New Farm in Noake village, Oxfordshire. And readers may also recall, Thomas, in his new-found role of Estate Manager, on vacating his office, had taken off his baggy ratting cap and tousled his greying hair in the warm spring breeze then wiped his moist forehead with his grubby jacket sleeve. He had heaved a thankful sigh that the day would be heralded as a great success. All had gone well and a suitable amount of progress had been made. The three brothers had to agree that if things carried on as they had begun then there was definitely a future for them working for Isaac Jakeman and his innovative project. Even so, Thomas accepted that all the unprecedented fortitude that was dropping at his immediate family's feet, as it was similarly at John's and William's, may at some stage come to an abrupt and crashing finality. 'When, and more importantly, at what cost' he reflected. Nothing was ever etched in marble. Heartache he could handle... heartbreak was a totally different matter altogether. He couldn't help but fret that it might not be too long before he found himself falling foul of one or the other... if not both simultaneously. Polly on the Mopstick had revolved around John Kerwood's son, Joseph, who was eight years old in 1881. In 1951, at the age of 78, when the paperback cover photos were taken, he may possibly have been the last remaining member of the Oxfordshire branch of the Kerwood family who were alive in 1881. He is pictured on the front cover of the paperback edition with his wife Eliza. His attire speaks volumes apropos his arduous lifestyle. On the reverse cover joining them in a family group is their youngest son, William, along with their eldest, John, standing behind their youngest daughter, Doris. Front and centre is Michael, William's only son and Joseph & Eliza's only grandson. Doris and the possing-tub, is Eliza's recollection of events and it reflects her life from a young rag-a-muffin right up until she is a beautiful woman of twenty.

In March 1949 the security service MI5 received notice of a suspect person about to enter Britain and went to great pains to keep her under surveillance. This person was the author Doris Lessing. She would eventually go on to win the Nobel Prize for literature as an «epicist … who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny». And it was precisely this scrutiny that troubled the guardians of the status quo. Lessing grew up in colonial Rhodesia and hated the scorn with which the colonists treated the native population. She worked tirelessly for a more just society and this drove her into support for communism. But a communist, as one of her fictional characters says, «is hated, despised, feared and hunted». Peter Raina’s book, reproducing the secret files kept on Lessing, shows that this was largely true, even though her emphasis in these troubled times was always on Peace. Lessing was eventually disillusioned by communism, and sought a better understanding of human relations than Soviet-conforming clichés could provide. However, her understanding was much enriched by the experiences of her activism and knowledge of the opposition it aroused. The secret files show how strongly Lessing followed her convictions and throw new light on how her perceptions of society evolved. Peter Raina elucidates this in a short Introduction and an Epilogue discussing aspects of her writings.

Doris is quick. If there was a Chicken Olympics she'd win every race. She's not just quick for a chicken, but she can outrun any animal on the farm - and even the farmer himself, though frankly that's not so difficult as he's a bit old and eats too much. She's beaten all-comers, but now she faces her greatest challenge. He's mean; he's magnificent; he's the Rooster with the Booster - Lionel Partington the Third Doris may be the fastest chicken in the farmyard; but does she have what it takes to be the fastest chicken in the west - or will she fall fowl of Lionel and his lightning feet? Let battle commence
