Published in anticipation of the centenary of the poet’s birth, The Poetry of Dylan Thomas is the first study of the poet to show how his work may be read in terms of contemporary critical concerns, using theories of modernism, the body, gender, the carnivalesque, language, hybridity and the pastoral in order to view it in an original light. Moreover, in presenting a Dylan Thomas who has real significance for twenty-first century readers, it shows that such a reappraisal also requires us to re-think some of the ways in which all post-Waste Land British poetry has been read in the last few decades.
New Theoretical Perspectives on Dylan Thomas
Dylan Thomas's reputation precedes him. In keeping with his claim that he held `a beast, an angel, and a madman in him', interpretations of his work have ranged from solemn adoration to dubious mythologising. His many voices continue to reverberate across culture and the arts: from poetry and letters, to popular music and Hollywood film. However, this wide and sometimes controversial renown has occasionally hindered serious analysis of his writing. Counterbalancing the often-misleading popular reputation, this book showcases eight new critical perspectives on Thomas's work. It is the first to provide in one volume a critical overview of the multifaceted range of his output, from the poetry, prose and correspondence to his work for wartime propaganda filmmaking, his late play for voices Under Milk Wood, and his reputation in letters and wider society. The whole proves that Thomas was much more than his own self-characterisation as a `writer of words, and nothing else'.

Although writing predominantly in the English language, Dylan Thomas is regarded as many as Wales’ finest poet. He became popular in his lifetime and remained so after his premature death. In his later life he acquired a reputation, which he encouraged, as a"roistering, drunken and doomed poet". Born in Swansea in 1914, Dylan also lived in London and often toured America. It was on one of his speaking tours that he collapsed in the White Horse Tavern, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York. He later died on 9th November 1953 in the St. Vincent's Hospital. This new Pitkin biography explores Dylan the man, his poetry and his life, and is accompanied by beautiful illustrations.

“Like a great photographer, MARA BERGMAN celebrates the moment and detail at the core of memory. Together, her poems show the great changes families experience – the free and fearless life of a young woman set alongside a dying mother hanging on so she can hold a great-grandchild, the one-sided conversations we have with the dead. Her dynamism is infectious – you are drawn into this family’s wonder, love, compassion, grief and happiness. Bergman’s poems remind me of Pablo Neruda’s belief in the driving force of love: ‘Hold on to that, don’t let it get away …’ and one of the fi nal poems, ‘The Happiness’, delivers the book’s message: ‘Before it leaves, I will bury it deep enough to save.’ After reading these poems, you’ll feel braced and ready, you’ll feel wiser and more generous, you’ll want to hold on to moments that contain your own astonishment.” JACKIE WILLS

One of the outstanding literary figures of the twentieth century, the Welsh poet and playwright Dylan Thomas is as famous for his poetry as he is for his dissolute, Bohemian lifestyle and tempestuous personal life. In The Three Lives of Dylan Thomas, journalist Hilly Janes explores the poet's life and extraordinary legacy through the eyes of her father, the artist Alfred Janes. A member of Thomas's inner circle, he painted the poet at three key moments: in 1934, 1953 and, posthumously in 1964, portraits which are at the heart of Janes' work. Drawing on her own personal archive, including drawings, diaries, letters and new interviews with Thomas's friends and descendants, The Three Lives of Dylan Thomas traces the course of the poet's life, from his birthplace in Swansea to his untimely death in a New York hospital in 1953.
