Illegal: How America's Lawless Immigration Regime Threatens Us All

A political scientist explains how the American immigration system ran off the rails -- and proposes a bold plan for reform Under the Trump administration, US immigration agencies terrorize the undocumented, target people who are here legally, and even threaten the constitutional rights of American citizens. How did we get to this point? In Illegal, Elizabeth F. Cohen reveals that our current crisis has roots in early twentieth century white nationalist politics, which began to reemerge in the 1980s. Since then, ICE and CBP have acquired bigger budgets and more power than any other law enforcement agency. Now, Trump has unleashed them. If we want to reverse the rising tide of abuse, Cohen argues that we must act quickly to rein in the powers of the current immigration regime and revive saner approaches based on existing law. Going beyond the headlines, Illegal makes clear that if we don't act now all of us, citizen and not, are at risk.
For centuries, segregation and treaties have secured enduring peace between the Altered and Untouched, the two factions of Alterra; but when corruption and scientific progress threaten to cast the factions into chaos and war, two star-crossed heroines attempt to do the impossible and unite their people. After the Mass Consumption drained the earth of its natural resources, those who survived joined one of two factions: the Altered adapted by mechanically enhancing their bodies and relying on the technological remnants left behind; the Untouched retreated from technology, believing it a contributor to the Consumption, and reverted to a simplistic way of life that respected and celebrated the natural world. They have lived apart for centuries, each believing they are "fittest." But when the factions realize they are both prey to a new hunter, they desperately seek a savior who can keep them and their legacies alive. Addison Cain is a spirited Altered noble who favors the sword over conversation, much to her mother's relief. She has nothing in common with Jordana Hale, a brilliant Untouched healer who has perfected the art of keeping everyone at a distance. The two Alterrans are tapped with the responsibility of saving their people and find themselves thrown into the chaos together. As they attempt to unite their prejudiced factions, and stave off extinction, they find themselves falling in love, and learn they have much more to lose than they ever realized.

When Europe's Great War engulfed the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalists rose in revolt against their Turkish rulers and allied with the British on the promise of an independent Arab state. In October 1918, the Arabs' military leader, Prince Faisal, victoriously entered Damascus and proclaimed a constitutional government in an independent Greater Syria.Faisal won American support for self-determination at the Paris Peace Conference, but other Entente powers plotted to protect their colonial interests. Under threat of European occupation, the Syrian-Arab Congress declared independence on March 8, 1920 and crowned Faisal king of a 'civil representative monarchy.' Sheikh Rashid Rida, the most prominent Islamic thinker of the day, became Congress president and supervised the drafting of a constitution that established the world's first Arab democracy and guaranteed equal rights for all citizens, including non-Muslims.But France and Britain refused to recognize the Damascus government and instead imposed a system of mandates on the pretext that Arabs were not yet ready for self-government. In July 1920, the French invaded and crushed the Syrian state. The fragile coalition of secular modernizers and Islamic reformers that had established democracy was destroyed, with profound consequences that reverberate still.Using previously untapped primary sources, including contemporary newspaper accounts, reports of the Syrian-Arab Congress, and letters and diaries from participants, How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs is a groundbreaking account of an extraordinary, brief moment of unity and hope - and of its destruction.

The ground shakes under Jeanie's feet, and she staggers across the pristine corridor, her blowtorch digging into her hip when she collides with the wall. The blaring alarm pounds through her head. We get it, the moon is imploding She's still far away from the ship that's her only escape from the disintegrating base. Too far away. Years ago, Jeanie and Liam thought the isolated moon base would be a middle ground between her spacefaring lifestyle and his need for the stability of a space station. It didn't take long to realize that the life they chose was making both of them miserable. But now it's literally falling apart around them, with no escape in sight. No escape but one slim chance they have no choice but to take. It may not be comfortable or pretty, but it just might keep them alive long enough to save their marriage. Endless Sea of Stars is a sci-fi second-chance romance novella with a good amount of spice--intended for mature readers Content notes: Sexually explicit scenes, liberal use of obscenities. See the book page on Elizabeth F. Shearly's website for detailed content notes.
After nuclear armageddon, Chloe's days have fallen into a routine: wake up from the nightmares at four a.m., farm chores with Vishesh, schooling with the kids, fight with Monty, and then an early bedtime. As long as their vegetable patch stays viable, they can avoid a slow and painful death. But this season their field is contaminated. Short of asking for help from the walking towns--mechanical hulks developed to decontaminate land and water--there's no recourse. Chloe risks going behind Monty's back to contact the towns, but the response isn't at all what she expected. Now that she knows there are bigger problems out there, she can't just leave well enough alone. But what can a former computer scientist hope to do in a world of seeds and soil? Dread Spring is a post-apocalyptic adventure about love, loyalty, and building the life you want. Content notes: Domestic abuse, pregnancy, death of family member, occasional use of obscenities, gunshot wound. See the book page on Elizabeth F. Shearly's website for detailed content notes. "Elizabeth F. Szewczyk wastes no time. In the very first poem of Fragments of Survival, she invites us in by recreating for us, and for herself, one of the most profound moments in the lives of us all. And she does so by weaving the harrowing with the profoundly tender, observing with heartbreaking accuracy the making of a boy whom she suggests will grow into an abusive man: the boy buries his toy trucks in the back yard... buries them/in the corner side of the house, by the gladiolas/then plants the Hating Seed, waters with tears. These fabulous poems rise from the page gently, yet each carries with it the weight of some wise insight, recognizable and yet utterly new and singular. Whether she takes us apple picking or into the depths of winter where something terrible and cold emerges -- whether she welcomes the promise of new spring and the miracle of youth, or a devastating, inevitable loss, this book overflows with magnificent poems. Powerfully satisfying and human in an extraordinarily honest and clear voice. Read this book " John L. Stanizzi, After the Bell and Hallelujah Time ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Horrendous experiences are beautifully packaged in this depiction of the torture a child endures when sexually abused. Pain, confusion, dread, loneliness and fear steal her childhood. She has no reason to assume she will grow up, no expectation of surviving the torture life has delivered to her. But astounding writing, incredible imagery and the protagonist's honesty convince us that the sharing of dreadful memories gains freedom and salvation not only for her, but for readers as well." Rebecca Leo, The Flaws that Bind ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "What plants the 'hating seed' inside of others, inside of us? And what is the winding path to peace? These are the dark and difficult topics that Elizabeth Szewczyk explores in her new poetry collection, Fragments of Survival. Ms. Szewczyk's poems are honest and wise, and demonstrate that, while the traumas of the past may never fully leave us, they do not need to hold us back from who we are meant to become." My path in time took a turn in a direction. I hadn't planned for my future. I want to save, travel, or may go into politics as I grew up having politic talked in the house. But somewhere along the line, we had to find the answer to life's most complex problems but as a teenager, like most my age, I went out and about with friends. One night, my life took this turn. I became a rape victim which changed the course of my plans. Immensely, I was married at 16 for eight years and the first child was born in 1962. Three more followed and lost my late husband in 1970. While raising four children alone, I began to start thinking about why and what was the reason God created us. I see friends and family all running around saying and doing the same things against each other, getting nowhere, and repeating the same mistakes against others. As my wonder grew, I realized there had to be more to our lives then what we were experiencing. I heard a lot. Wise old saying, we grew up hearing them. What was the reasoning behind them? Being said, there just had to be a purpose. Lo and behold, with a lot of trial and error over the years and putting all together, I've found the way. The words REPETITION IN LIFE will happen down over the second generation. The same old occur time after time and again in a generation if not corrected. The messages of wisdom and unspoken words came to me. Putting the pieces together in my family tree and my mind. The more I mused, the more I thought that there had to be a way.
