Take the best preacher you've ever heard, add in the teacher who first opened your eyes to the excitement and meaning of your favorite subject in school, combine these with that member of the family to whom you could always turn for the best advice, stir them all together, and you'll get a flavor of the writing of Ellsworth Kalas. And now the very best thoughts and reflections of this wise teacher and guide are available together in one volume. Across his career Ellsworth Kalas has worn many hats: pastor, professor, seminary president. Through all of them, however, he has remained first and foremost an interpreter of God's word. His most potent skill is to open up new insights and meanings in even the most familiar biblical stories. Gathered here are some of Kalas's most humorous, touching, and enlightening writings, drawn from his own experience of finding God in Scripture.

Includes Letter from President Abraham Lincoln to his parents. Excerpt: On Monday, the twenty-ninth of April, 1861, fourteen days after President Lincoln's call for 75,000 troops, a regiment composed of 1,100 men, uniformed and equipped, marched the streets of New York en route to the national capital. Riding at the head of the column was the Colonel, a young man of twenty-four, small of stature, with flashing dark eyes and with a look of authority and power upon his handsome features. The crowds along the line of march cheered enthusiastically as the regiment passed-a magnificent body of men who at his call had rushed in the space of four days to the colors. It was Ellsworth's regiment of Zouaves, recruited from the firemen of New York City, and afterwards mustered into the service as the Eleventh New York Volunteer Infantry. But whence came this wonderful youth who, as if by magic, had called into being this stalwart array-bold and fearless men, resenting restraint, but submitting cheerfully now to his iron discipline? Not many years before, he had been but an obscure country boy of northern New York, remote from the places of advancement and culture, a son of worthy parents, unable, however, to contribute of their limited means to the furtherance of the ambitious desires of their offspring. In the brief space of a year he had achieved national prominence; having had up to the summer of 1860 but a local reputation, confined to Chicago and its vicinity, he became the popular idol of the entire northern country. At the head of his United States Zouave Cadets he had toured the leading eastern cities and won distinction for the extraordinary perfection of drill exhibited by his command. Shining through all this historic expedition appears preeminent the attractive personality of the young captain-knightly, magnetic, winning, lofty of character, able to control every one of his cadets under the imperious rule of his native authority and undeviating rectitude. On the morning of the twenty-fourth of May, less than a month from the departure of the Fire Zouaves from New York, Ellsworth was killed at Alexandria. Not in vain was his fall, for it caused the hesitating northern people to reach firmly at last for the rifle. "Ellsworth's Avengers," the Forty-fourth New York Volunteer Infantry, recruited from every county of the Empire State, with unusual physical requirements and moral standards, marched from their encampment at Albany for the front on October 21, 1861. Well did they fulfill the name they bore, for on many a battle field this somewhat Puritanical regiment, remarkable for the scholarship and worth of its rank and file, never forgot the assassination of Ellsworth as they carried their rent colors against the foe. Still another regiment of New York City firemen, the Second Fire Zouaves, or the Seventy-third New York Volunteer Infantry, was recruited under the inspiration of Ellsworth's name and was mustered into the service on July 10, 1861. Reenlisting in 1864, it had a continuous service to the close of the war and enjoys a magnificent history.

A landmark publication featuring 60 career-spanning photographs by Ellsworth Kelly, one of the most revered artists of the past 100 years Marking the first museum exhibition devoted solely to the photographs of Ellsworth Kelly, this beautifully designed volume features each photograph in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s illuminating presentation of this lesser-known aspect of Kelly’s art. From the late 1940s on, Kelly created an era-defining body of abstract art based on many kinds of visual phenomena he perceived around him. Largely made for himself, Kelly’s photographs record these discoveries in tightly-composed images of nature and architecture that often reverberate with striking sunlight and shadow. Similar as they may appear, Kelly did not base his paintings, sculpture and works on paper on his photographs. The camera for Kelly was yet one more artistic tool he used to brilliantly transcribe his lived surroundings into an art that, however abstract, always resonated with his subjective experiences of actual, everyday worlds. Kelly’s rich sensory fascination with such worlds, from shadows on a beachside staircase to the curve of a snowy hillside, courses throughout this handsome book. To those familiar with or new to the artist, these photographs offer a vividly direct chance to see Ellsworth Kelly’s eye and mind at work unlike any other genre in which this groundbreaking artist ever worked. Born in Newburgh, New York, Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) served in France in World War II’s Ghost Army, graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and returned to France from 1948–54. Over the next seven decades, back in New York City and then upstate, Kelly produced an uncompromising body of art that set new standards for the possibilities of abstract art in the 20th century. His work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives the world over and is represented in virtually every major national and international museum.

A Brief Study of the Tabernacle (Hardcover)
The Reverend Archer Ellsworth examines the nature of the tabernacle, a small and portable earthen dwelling which housed the Israelites during the Biblical era. A portable yet distinctive dwelling, the tabernacle would accompany the Jews through their exodus from Egypt, and into the lands of Canaan. For the most part, the tabernacle is mentioned in the Book of Exodus, which details its physical characteristics and purpose as mobile housing and a gathering place for the transitory Jewish peoples. Most vitally, God ordered Moses to remove adornments from the tabernacle while continuing to use it throughout his people's journeys in the unsettled countryside and into the Promised Land. Ellsworth Archer (1863 - 1944) was an author, preacher and committed Christian who spent his life in study of the Bible. Working in San Joaquin County, California for most of his adulthood, he was active in the church community of the state and would assist in the establishment of multiple churches.
