Evening in the Plaza: Haibun & Haiku

Jeffrey Woodward

Tournesol Books

Evening in the Plaza contains forty-one haibun and forty-eight haiku, selected from the published writings of over a decade, by Jeffrey Woodward, a leading exponent and theorist of haibun, and founder and general editor of Haibun Today. The origins of haibun, or the wedding of prose and haiku, can be traced to 17th century Japan but this literary genre gradually fell out of favor and practice in its homeland; it has been revived and naturalized internationally by English-language poets in recent decades. "Potentially lost in Jeffrey Woodward's enduring advocacy of the haibun genre is the quality of his own work. No more. The pieces of this handsome collection, assembled from the past decade, exhibit the suppleness of his style, the probity of his thought, and the range of his affections. It isn't essential that a champion of a neglected genre be expert in it, but when he is, it lends credence to his claims of value. This volume will make certain those claims are taken very seriously." -Jim Kacian, Senior Editor, Contemporary Haibun

Eileen Reeves

Eileen Reeves examines a web of connections between journalism, optics, and astronomy in early modern Europe, devoting particular attention to the ways in which a long-standing association of reportage with covert surveillance and astrological prediction was altered by the near simultaneous emergence of weekly newsheets, the invention of the Dutch telescope, and the appearance of Galileo Galilei's astronomical treatise, The Starry Messenger. Early modern news writers and consumers often understood journalistic texts in terms of recent developments in optics and astronomy, Reeves demonstrates, even as many of the first discussions of telescopic phenomena such as planetary satellites, lunar craters, sunspots, and comets were conditioned by accounts of current events. She charts how the deployment of particular technologies of vision-the telescope and the camera obscura-were adapted to comply with evolving notions of objectivity, censorship, and civic awareness. Detailing the differences between various types of printed and manuscript news and the importance of regional, national, and religious distinctions, Evening News emphasizes the ways in which information moved between high and low genres and across geographical and confessional boundaries in the first decades of the seventeenth century.

A surprising and vivid remembrance of gay life in the wake of World War IIIt is often difficult to imagine gay gathering places in the decades before the Stonewall riots of the 1960s, and nearly impossible to think of such communities outside the nation’s largest cities. Yet such places did exist, and their histories tell amazing stories of survival and the struggle for acceptance and self-respect.Kirmser’s was such a place. In the 1940s, this bar in downtown St. Paul was popular with blue-collar customers during the day, then became an unofficial home to working-class gay men and lesbians at night. After Ricardo J. Brown was discharged from the navy for revealing his sexual orientation in 1945, he returned home to Minnesota and discovered in Kirmser’s a space where he could develop his new self-awareness and fulfill his desire to find people like himself. The Evening Crowd at Kirmser’s is Brown’s compelling memoir of his experiences as a young gay man in St. Paul. In an engaging and open writing style, and through stories both humorous and tragic, Brown introduces us to his family, companions, and friends, such as Flaming Youth, a homely, sardonic man who carried the nickname from his youth ironically into middle age; Dale, who suddenly loses his job of six years after an anonymous note informed his employer that he was gay; and Bud York, an attractive and confident man with a fondness for young boys.

David Walton's collection of eight stories, five of which are set in Pittsburgh, offers darkly humorous meditations on modern life. In "Skin and Bone" an unexpected, strange, and ultimately tragic encounter between a karate student and his instructor raises questions about guilt and responsibility. "The Sundeck" touches on sex, loneliness, and the difficulty for people to meaningfully connect. In the title story, a dinner party attended by a struggling academic begins with the toast "No more angst or ennui" only to end in hostility and disaster. Evening Out was the first book to win the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction.

"Blumhardt’s conviction that God is present and powerful and able to still work his will in the world today breathes through every prayer. These are as striking, moving, and provocative now as they surely were when Blumhardt prayed them." — John E. Phelan, Jr., The Covenant CompanionEnd each day of the year peacefully by turning to God with a prayer and a Bible passage. We want to turn to God at the end of each day, but often don’t find the words to express our deepest feelings and longing. This collection of prayers is one of the few daily devotionals especially intended for use in the evening.Blumhardt’s words bespeak a certainty in God’s nearness. The peace that flows from them comes from an unshakeable conviction that God’s kingdom is indeed on the way. In stormy and challenging times like our own, most of us need this reassurance frequently, if not daily.

U Nicholas

In this study on evening worship in the Orthodox Church, Nicholas Uspensky reveals the true purpose for which the service of Vespers came into existence: the ancient Christian tradition of giving thanks for the evening light, and the faith which this tradition implies concerning the presence of Christ in the midst of those gathered in His name. While tracing the evolution of the rites of Vespers and the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts from their Old Testamental antecedents to their present forms today, he calls upon liturgical commentators to stand closer to the meaning attached to the service of evening worship by the ancient Church. This valuable historical-liturgical study also discusses the Communion which is added to the Vespers in the midst of the Fast, and the differences that exist between the Greek and Russian orders of service for the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist. Nicholas Uspensky is Professor of Liturgy at the Leningrad Theological Academy. He is the most eminent specialist in the field of Liturgy and liturgical music in the Russian Church today. Born on January 3, 1900, in the family of a priest, he studied at the Seminary of Novgorod and received a graduate theological education at the Theological Institute which had been established after the Revolution in Petrograd (now Leningrad). He received the degree of Candidate of Theology (equivalent to an M.Div) in 1925. He continued research at the Institute under the direction of A. A. Dmitrievskii, the renowned liturgical scholar and the editor of ancient Euchologia and Typika.
