Representations of Nilpotent Lie Groups and their Applications: Volume 1, Part 1, Basic Theory and Examples
There has been no exposition of group representations and harmonic analysis suitable for graduate students for over twenty years. In this, the first of two projected volumes, the authors remedy the situation by surveying all the basic theory developed since the pioneering work of Kirillov in 1958, and consolidating more recent results. Topics covered include basic Kirillov theory, algorithms for parametrizing all coadjoint orbits. The authors have not only given here a modern account of all topics necessary for current research, but have also included many computed examples. This volume can serve then either as a handbook for specialists, with a complete, self-contained exposition of major results, or as a textbook suitable for graduate courses in harmonic analysis.
Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View

Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View

Immanuel Kant; Frederick P. Van De Pitte

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY PRESS
1978
sidottu
In the fall semester of 1772/73 at the Albertus University of K nigsberg, Immanuel Kant, metaphysician and professor of logic and metaphysics, began lectures on anthropology, which he continued until 1776, shortly before his retirement from public life. His lecture notes and papers were first published in 1798, eight years after the publication of the Critique of Judgment, the third of his famous Critiques. The present edition of the Anthropology is a translation of the text found in volume 7 of Kants gesammelte Schriften, edited by Oswald K lpe.Kant describes the Anthropology as a systematic doctrine of the knowledge of humankind. (He does not yet distinguish between the academic discipline of anthropology as we understand it today and the philosophical.) Kant's lectures stressed the "pragmatic" approach to the subject because he intended to establish pragmatic anthropology as a regular academic discipline. He differentiates the physiological knowledge of the human race--the investigation of "what Nature makes of man"--from the pragmatic--"what man as a free being makes of himself, what he can make of himself, and what he ought to make of himself." Kant believed that anthropology teaches the knowledge of humankind and makes us familiar with what is pragmatic, not speculative, in relation to humanity. He shows us as world citizens within the context of the cosmos.Summarizing the cloth edition of the Anthropology, Library Journal concludes: "Kant's allusions to such issues as sensation, imagination, judgment, (aesthetic) taste, emotion, passion, moral character, and the character of the human species in regard to the ideal of a cosmopolitan society make this work an important resource for English readers who seek to grasp the connections among Kant's metaphysics of nature, metaphysics of morals, and political theory. The notes of the editor and translator, which incorporate material from Ernst Cassirer's edition and from Kant's marginalia in the original manuscript, shed considerable light on the text."

Recalling Deeds Immortal

Recalling Deeds Immortal

William B. Lees; Frederick P. Gaske

University Press of Florida
2014
sidottu
One hundred and fifty years ago, Florida was shaken by battle, blockade, economic deprivation, and the death of native sons both within and far outside its borders. Today, tributes to the valor and sacrifice of Florida’s soldiers, sailors, and civilians can be found from the Panhandle to the Keys. Authors Lees and Gaske look at the diversity of Civil War monuments built in Florida between Reconstruction and the present day, elucidating their emblematic and social dimensions. Most monuments built in Florida honor the Confederacy, praising the valor of Southern soldiers and often extolling the righteousness of their “Lost Cause.” At the same time, a fascinating minority of Union monuments also exists in the state—and these bear notably muted messages. Recalling Deeds Immortal shows how the creation of these bronze and stone monuments created new social battlegrounds as, over the years, groups such as the Ladies’ Memorial Associations, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Grand Army of the Republic competed to control the messages behind the memorialization of fallen soldiers and veterans. Examining the evolution of Civil War monuments, the authors demonstrate that the construction of these memorials is itself an important part of Civil War and post-Civil War history.

War Crimes Discreetly Veiled

Thanks to what has come to be known as 'The Iron Curtain of Discreet Silence', at the termination of the Second World War, there was a seemingly unanimous acceptance of the then novel legal proposition that an accuser is a fit person to act as judge of his own charges. After some two years, however, two small books, written concurrently and independently, were published in this country challenging this proposition as contrary to established legal principles and common sense, Epitaph on Nuremberg by Montgomery Belgion and Advance to Barbarism by the author of the present book, Mr. F. J. P. Veale. Enlarged versions of both books were subsequently published in the United States, Mr. Montgomery Belgion's book under the title Victor's Justice in 1949 and Mr. Veale's book under its original title in 1953. That these books, and others too numerous to mention, published both here and abroad, have contributed to a gradual change in public opinion is suggested by the fact that before the end of June 1957, the last of the German prisoners serving sentence by a British Court as war criminals had been released.

Expedited partner therapy (EPT) is the practice of treating the sex partners of persons with sexually transmitted diseases without an intervening medical evaluation or professional prevention counselling. The usual implementation of EPT is through patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT), although other methods may be employed. The available literature and selected unpublished studies were systematically reviewed, and this book provides background for the development of guidance on use of EPT as an option for partner management for selected STDs and patients. This is an edited, excerpted and augmented edition of a CDC publication.

Whether it is your first or fourth staffing for the purpose of enlisting your child into special education, it can be a dreaded event. You, the parent, are introduced to anywhere from five to seven school "specialists," handed a lengthy, typed form that represents you and your child's rights. The staffing begins. You are not given the time to read them nor are your rights explained to your understanding. They are set aside to review at your convenience, i.e., once you leave the building and you are possibly in shock. It is not the intent to intimidate, silence and/or frighten you. It is just the nature of the Beast.
