Prepared by the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Espa ola) and the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language. Descended from the last king of Poland, born in France, educated at a British grade school in Mexico and a Catholic high school in the United States, Hélène Elizabeth Louise Amelie Paula Dolores Poniatowska Amor—otherwise known as Elena—is a passionate, socially conscious writer who is widely known in Mexico and who deserves to be better known everywhere else. With his subject’s complete cooperation (she granted him access to fifty years of personal files), Michael Schuessler provides the first critical biography of Poniatowska’s life and work. She is perhaps best known outside of Mexico as the author of Massacre in Mexico (La noche de Tlatelolco) and Here’s to You, Jesusa! (Hasta no verte, Jesús mío). But her body of published books is vast, beginning with the 1954 publication of Lilus Kikus, a collection of short stories. And she is still writing today.Schuessler, who befriended Poniatowska more than fifteen years ago, is a knowledgeable guide to her engrossing life and equally engaging work. As befits her, his portrait is itself a literary collage, a “living kaleidoscope” that is constantly shifting to include a multiplicity of voices—those of fellow writers, literary critics, her nanny, her mother, and the writer herself—easily accessible to general readers and essential to scholars.Available in English for the first time, this insightful book includes 40 photographs and drawings and an annotated bibliography of Poniatowska’s works—those that have already been translated into English and those awaiting translation.

. - Los editores ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "Garc a M rquez' work is unfathomable without Cort zar's, and Cort zar's is unfathomable without Vargas Llosa's, and an entire network related to something very real is established. Because I know each one of us is keenly aware of what the others are doing." --Carlos Fuentes, 1968 "This book collects, for the very first time, the personal correspondence between the four master novelists of the Latin American Boom: Cort zar, Fuentes, Garc a M rquez, and Vargas Llosa. The latter two were awarded the Nobel Prize, and the first two deserved it. No one would have been surprised if they had received it. This conversation among four brilliant and successful friends gives us unprecedented access to their personal and collective relationships, with all their agreements and disagreements, and opens a privileged window to Latin American literature and politics, specially during a crucial time in their modern history, from 1959 to 1975. "Boom Letters chronicles this quartet's highest peak, when the artists seemed to start writing less on their own and play together as part of the same literature, exploring this appreciation and the regeneration of a common past. "Finding four great writers in an almost unparalleled historical setting--communicating over several years to discuss novels, literature, Latin American history, their own biographies, and the dynamics of their ideas within such context--is absolutely unique. These pages tell their story." --The editors

Normative Plurality in International Law

This book provides a theoretical framework for explaining the choices made by international decision-makers in terms of what constitutes law. It comprehensively analyzes the practice of human rights courts in applying legal instruments outside their competence and proposes that this practice recognizes that different normative instruments coexist in an un-ordered space, and that meaning can be produced by the free interaction of those instruments around a problem. Based on this, the book advances its normative plurality hypothesis, which states that decision-makers must survey the acquis of international law in order to identify all the instruments containing relevant normative information for a particular situation. The set of rules of law applicable to the situation must then be complemented with other instruments containing specific normative information relevant to the situation, resulting in a complete system of norms advancing a common purpose.

With the final phase of the European Monetary Union underway, concern has been raised over the regional implications of the European Central Bank (ECB) Monetary Policy. Departing from the standard approach utilized by the ECB, this book provides a comprehensive theoretical framework to explore the ways through which money and monetary policy may affect regions.Carlos Rodriguez Fuentes, the rising star of Spanish economics, has produced a work of impressive clarity which analyzes the effects of regional monetary policy - with particular reference to European Monetary Union. Here, he examines the role that the banking system and the liquidity preference of economic agents play in the transmission of central banks monetary policy decisions to regions within a country or countries within a currency union. Rodriguez Fuentes utilizes a unique framework built upon the basic principle of the Post-Keynsian monetary theory which enables the identification of a new way for money and monetary policy to have a regional impact; the behavioural effect. This book, with it’s combination of literary and empirical approach will prove essential reading for all students of economics and politics, as well as readers who interested in the development of the European Union.
