Martin Gardner in the Twenty-First Century

Martin Gardner in the Twenty-First Century

Mathematical Association of America
2011
pokkari
The prodigious writings of Martin Gardner, from his Mathematical Games column in Scientific American to the 70-plus books he authored, had an enormous influence on the field of recreational mathematics. This book collects articles Gardner wrote for the MAA in the twenty-first century, together with other articles the MAA published from 1999 to 2012 that are inspired by his work. Eight of Gardner's articles are presented here: together they represent his playful and engaging approach to recreational mathematics, and the breadth of his interests, spanning geometry, number theory, graph theory, probability, and pseudo-science. The remaining 33 chapters are a diverse collection of responses to Gardner's work, many of which address open problems. This book is a tribute to the deep and lasting impact of a prolific and brilliant writer. It is for anyone who, like Martin Gardner, loves mathematics.

Gerald Gardner and the Creation of Wicca

Gerald Gardner and the Creation of Wicca

Gerald Gardner (1884–1964) provided the central inspiration for Wicca, as a modern, revived, form of Pagan witchcraft. As such, his cultural and religious significance has grown exponentially over the 60 years since his death. 'A Rough Magic' re-evaluates the sources of Gardner's inspiration, redefines his early life within the context of colonial Malaya and the opium trade, and emphasises his vision and ability in fashioning an entirely new synthesis of magical beliefs drawn from both Eastern and Western traditions. In so doing, he stripped away the demonic elements of witchcraft and emphasised Wicca as a creative, mutable and undogmatic nature religion, serving as both fertility cult and a unique source of personal empowerment, that was capable of transforming the world.

History of the Spirit Lake Massacre and Captivity of Miss Abbie Gardner
The book ""History Of The Spirit Lake Massacre And Captivity Of Miss Abbie Gardner"" is a first-hand account of the Spirit Lake Massacre, a tragic event that took place in Iowa in 1857. The author, Abbie Gardner, was just 13 years old at the time of the massacre and was taken captive by the Native American tribe responsible for the attack. The book begins with a brief history of the area and the tensions between the settlers and the Native American tribes. It then goes on to describe the events leading up to the massacre, including the warning signs that were ignored by the settlers. The massacre itself is described in detail, with Gardner recounting the horror and chaos that ensued as the settlers tried to defend themselves against the attacking tribe. Gardner's own family was killed in the attack, but she was taken captive along with several other settlers. The majority of the book is dedicated to Gardner's experiences as a captive, including her interactions with the Native Americans and the harsh living conditions she endured. She also describes her eventual rescue and return to civilization. Throughout the book, Gardner provides a unique perspective on the Spirit Lake Massacre and its aftermath. Her personal account offers a glimpse into the lives of the settlers and the Native Americans during this tumultuous time in American history. This is a new release of the original 1923 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Ava Gardner was the sex symbol who dazzled the other sex symbols. Elizabeth Taylor and Lana Turner thought her the most beautiful woman they had ever seen. She drove Frank Sinatra to the brink of suicide. Ernest Hemingway carried around one of her kidney stones as a sacred memento. Howard Hughes begged her to marry him: she punched out his front teeth. Her charismatic presence, jaw-dropping beauty and scandalous adventures fuelled the legend that she became. Yet she was a farmgirl who became a reluctant goddess, and who retreated from the world's gaze for the last years of her life. Filled with fresh insights gleaned from interviews with Ava's colleagues, friends and lovers, this is the definitive biography of Hollywood's most glamorous, restless and uninhibited star.
