Chemistry and Mode of Action of Crop Protection Agents

Leonard G Copping; H Geoffrey Hewitt

Royal Society of Chemistry
1998
nidottu
This book examines the chemistry and mode of action of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and plant growth regulators. It follows crop protection strategies from early discoveries to the present day, emphasising the biochemical targets of the compounds discussed. Chemistry and Mode of Action of Crop Protection Agents provides an in-depth, yet easy to read and understand, review of the major classes of pesticides, explaining also the basis of their activity and selectivity. Throughout, there are many references to allow the reader to pursue areas of special interest, and each chapter contains questions to ensure that the text has been understood. This is the first book on the mode of action of pesticides to have been published in over ten years, and as such will have a very wide audience. It is aimed primarily at graduate level but will also be relevant to the needs of some sixth form and undergraduate courses, as well as to industrialists and advisors in the field of crop protection.

Rural Tourism Development through a Creative Food Economy

Rural Tourism Development through a Creative Food Economy

Anne H J Lee; Geoffrey Wall

LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
2018
pokkari
This work provides a conceptual foundation for culinary tourism as a part of the development a creative food economy involving place branding. It analyzes the formation of culinary clusters that result from innovation in the production and consumption of local food. Porter's (1990) clustering model is used as a point of departure but is modified substantially to fit a situation in which tourism and agriculture are the leading sectors. Four key elements are specified in the new model: 'environmentally friendly movement', 'leadership', 'stakeholder collaboration' and 'communication and information flows'. The study makes important contributions to knowledge both conceptually and empirically by creating a model that addresses the creation of culinary clusters, by demonstrating the utility of the model through detailed case studies conducted in Ontario Canada, and practically, by directing attention to items that need careful consideration if synergistic relationships are to be established between agriculture and tourism through the development of culinary clusters as part of place-based rural economic development.

"Stylistics" is the study of language in the service of literary ends, and in Style in Fiction, Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short demonstrate how stylistic analysis can be applied to novels and stories. Writing for both students of English language and English literature, they show the practical ways in which linguistic analysis and literary appreciation can be combined, and illuminated, through the study of literary style. Drawing mainly on major works of fiction of the last 150 years, their practical and insightful examination of style through texts and extracts leads to a deeper understanding of how prose writers achieve their effects through language. Since its first publication in 1981, Style in Fiction has established itself as a key textbook in its field, selling nearly 30,000 copies. Now, in this revised edition, the authors have added substantial new material, including two completely new concluding chapters. These provide an extensive, up-to-date survey of developments in the field over the past 25 years, and apply the methods presented in earlier chapters to an analysis of an entire short story. The Further Reading section and the bibliographical references have also been thoroughly updated. In 2005 Style in Fiction was awarded the 25th Anniversary Prize by PALA (The Poetics and Linguistics Association) as the most influential book published in the field of stylistics 1980. Further proof, if proof were needed, that Style in Fiction remains a classic guide to its discipline.
