Brothers Henry, Charles and Thomas Richardson painted nearly 80 views of Hadrian's Wall between 1838 and the 1880s. Most were created by Henry Burdon Richardson, who accompanied author John Collingwood Bruce on his tour of Hadrian's Wall in 1848. Only 17 were reproduced as engravings in Bruce's books; very few have ever been published as paintings. They form a valuable record of the Roman frontier as it was during an important stage in its history, before the advent of the modern world. New theories and interpretations were coming to light, as described in Bruce's first book The Roman Wall, published in 1851. John Clayton, town clerk of Newcastle upon Tyne, had begun buying land along the Wall, aiming to preserve the remains, creating in effect an archaeological park. The production of the Richardson paintings, Bruce's contribution to Wall studies and the achievement of John Clayton in conserving the Wall, are all explored, providing a fascinating background story. The Second Century occupies a central place in the development of ancient Christianity. The aim of the book is to examine how in the cultural, social, and religious efflorescence of the Second Century, to be witnessed in phenomena such as the Second Sophistic, Christianity found a peculiar way of integrating into the more general transformation of the Empire and how this allowed the emerging religion to establish and flourish in Graeco-Roman society. Hadrian’s reign was the starting point of that process and opened new possibilities of self-definition and external self-presentation to Christianity, as well as to other social and religious agencies. Differently from Judaism, however, Christianity fully seized the opportunity, thus gaining an increasing place in Graeco-Roman society, which ultimately led to the first Christian peace under the Severan emperors. The point at issue is examined from a multi-disciplinary perspective (including archaeology, cultural, religious, and political history) to challenge well-established, but no longer satisfactory, historical and hermeneutical paradigms. The contributors aim to examine institutional issues and sociocultural processes in their different aspects, as they were made possible on Hadrian’s initiative and resulted in the merge of early Christianity into the Roman Empire.

Zum 450. Geburtstag Papst Hadrian VI. zeichnet diese Biografie die Stationen seines Lebens als Professor in L wen, Erzieher und sp terer Mitarbeiter Kaiser Karl V. und schlie lich als Papst nach. Welches Faszinosum von Antinoos ausging, für den Hadrian posthum eine Stadt errichten ließ und welcher Art ihre Beziehung war, soll in der Arbeit untersucht werden. Fragen nach der Herkunft des Jünglings, über das erste Treffen mit dem Kaiser, bis hin zu seinem mysteriösen Tod sollen Hauptaugenmerke sein. , Abstract: Hadrian baute Antinoos zu Ehren nicht nur eine Stadt mit seinem Namen sondern erhob ihn sogar zum neuen Gott, dem er unzählige Kultbilder und Kulttraditionen einrichtete. Ehrungen dieser Größenordnung, für eine Person, die weder Mitglied der kaiserlichen Familie noch ein verdienter Beamter gewesen war, hatte es vorher nicht gegeben. Weinerlich "wie ein Weib" soll Hadrian gewesen sein, nachdem sein Antinoos unter myteriösen Umständen 130 n. Chr. im Nil ertrunken war. Selbst für seine, einige Jahre später verstorbene Schwester soll er bei weitem nicht so viel Anteilnahme gezeigt haben. Unweigerlich drängt sich die Frage auf, welches Faszinosum von Antinoos ausging, dass den Kaiser zu solch gottgleichen Ehren bewegte. Welche Beziehung hatte er zu dem Mann, für den er posthum eine Stadt errichten ließ. Diesen beiden Fragen auf den Grund zu gehen, soll für die folgende Arbeit maßgebend sein. Wichtig dabei soll die Suche nach Herkunft, Bildung und Wesen Antinoos sein, da sie Rückschlüsse auf seine Rolle in der Beziehung geben könnten. Hatte er vielleicht Einfluss auf politische Entscheidungen Hadrians und gab es Auswirkungen auf die Ehe mit Sabina? Basierte die Beziehung nur auf erotischer Anzieh-ung oder war es tiefbindende Liebe? Lässt sie sich mit der idealisierten Knabenliebe der Griechen vergleichen, die seit der klassischen Zeit mit einem festen Regelwerk und einer Kulturtradition ausgestattet war? Welches Echo auf die Beziehung ist aus den Quellen ersichtlich und welche Rückschlüsse ergeben sich daraus auf die Akzeptanz dieser Liebe am Hof und im Volk? Um die Fragen zu klären, stehen verhältnismäßig wenig Quellen zur Verfügung. Hinweise zu Antinoos selbst können meist nur späteren oder christlichen Schriften entnommen werden, wobei diese aufgrund anderer Moralvorstellungen meist polemisierend und daher nur mit Vorsicht zu genießen sind. Die archäologischen Zeugnisse für Antinoos sind wiederum äußerst zahlreich. Über 100 Statuen und 140 Münztypen sind erhalten, die allerdings zu einem Großteil den idealisierten Gott, nicht den Menschen Antinoos darstellen. Die Quellenlage zum Verhältnis an sich ist ebenfalls äußerst dürftig. In der Forschung entwickelten sich daher, abhängig von jeweiligem Zeitgeist und Moralvorstellung, unterschiedliche Theorien.
