The Idea of Social Activity for Older People – Local Policy Implementation
As Europe ages, cities face increasing pressure to adapt policies for older populations. This book explores how the idea of "social activity" for older people is implemented within urban ageing policy in Poznan, Poland. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, including observations and interviews, the study uncovers how global concepts like active ageing are shaped by local institutions, actors, and contexts. It adopts discursive institutionalism, actor-network theory, and the glocalization lens to examine the complexities of translating ageing policy into practice. Through a detailed case study, the book investigates how social activity is framed, organized, and experienced in a specific urban environment, revealing hidden networks and power dynamics behind seemingly ordinary events. This work contributes to critical debates on ageing, policy implementation, and local governance, offering valuable insights for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in urban social policy and gerontology.

Dollhouses: From the V&A Museum of Childhood

Dollhouses: From the V&A Museum of Childhood

Halina Pasierbska

The dollhouse is both subversive and seductive. Dollhouses provide a microcosmic view of the world and preserve vanished aspects of daily life and culture. But they also present an idealized version of life, sometimes airbrushing out the more basic and functional elements of everyday living. This new volume uses the dollhouse's contradictions to explore interior design, new technology, professions, and family relationships, considering such topics as the role of the domestic servant and the gendering of spaces and household roles. The V&A Museum of Childhood's collection of dollhouses, representing homes and ways of living spanning three and a half centuries, provides the backdrop for these tales. For collectors and casual fans alike, the tiny rooms of dollhouses hold many stories.
Music in Chopin's Warsaw

Music in Chopin's Warsaw

Music in Chopin's Warsaw examines the rich musical environment of Fryderyk Chopin's youth—largely unknown to the English-speaking world—and places Chopin's early works in the context of this milieu. Halina Goldberg provides a historiographic perspective that allows a new and better understanding of Poland's cultural and musical circumstances. Chopin's Warsaw emerges as a vibrant European city that was home to an opera house, various smaller theaters, one of the earliest modern conservatories in Europe, several societies which organized concerts, musically active churches, spirited salon life, music publishers and bookstores, instrument builders, and for a short time even a weekly paper devoted to music. Warsaw was aware of and in tune with the most recent European styles and fashions in music, but it was also the cradle of a vernacular musical language that was initiated by the generation of Polish composers before Chopin and which found its full realization in his work. Significantly, this period of cultural revival in the Polish capital coincided with the duration of Chopin's stay there—from his infancy in 1810 to his final departure from his homeland in 1830. An uncanny convergence of political, economic, social, and cultural circumstances generated the dynamic musical, artistic, and intellectual environment that nurtured the developing genius. Had Chopin been born a decade earlier or a decade later, Goldberg argues, the capital—devastated by warfare and stripped of all cultural institutions—could not have provided support for his talent. The young composer would have been compelled to seek musical education abroad and thus would have been deprived of the specifically Polish experience so central to his musical style. A rigorously-researched and fascinating look at the Warsaw in which Chopin grew up, this book will appeal to students and scholars of nineteenth century music, as well as music lovers and performers.

Ancient Economies of the Northern Aegean

Ancient Economies of the Northern Aegean

Zosia Halina Archibald

The south-eastern tip of continental Europe was a major focus of creative energy in the second half of the first millennium BC. As the bridgehead between Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, the lands that corresponded to northern Greece, Bulgaria, and the European parts of Turkey became a focus of interest for a variety of external powers keen to benefit from this region's burgeoning wealth. While the ancient kingdoms of Macedon and Thrace were thought of as fringe areas of the Mediterranean, they became rich and successful, partly by exploiting the region's mineral wealth and timber and from the effective herding of livestock. In economic terms, these land-based states were strongly connected to the maritime powers of central and southern Greece and with areas far beyond the Aegean. Using the most up-to-date methods and theories about ancient economies, Archibald explores the cultural and economic dynamics of a region that continues to reveal unexpected dimensions of Classical antiquity.

Animal minds are complex and diverse, making them difficult to study. This Element focuses on a question that has received much attention in the field of comparative cognition: 'Do animals reason about unobservable variables like force and mental states?' The Element shows how researchers design studies and gather evidence to address this question. Despite the many virtues of current methods, hypotheses in comparative cognition are often underdetermined by the empirical evidence. Given this, philosophers and scientists have recently called for additional behavioral constraints on theorizing in the field. The Element endorses this proposal (known as 'signature testing'), while also arguing that studies on animal minds would benefit from drawing more heavily on neuroscience and biology.

Psychoanalytic Essays on Power and Vulnerability
"This paper is based on research into European economics and politics on the basis of ten months travelling in ten countries, as well as on four workshops run in Europe. Two hypotheses will be explored: It is possible to discern psychodynamic evidence that unresolved humiliation trauma is being re-evoked and recycled by attempts to find solutions and cures through the tyranny of austerity measures. But the question will be asked whether these are “chosen trauma” (Volkan, 2010) which may be at the heart of the foundation matrix (Foulkes, 1973) of the European Community. The exploration of political and economic leadership in the crisis in the European Union builds on the notion of society as a large group proliferating crises of identity. From a systemic perspective it is possible to analyse the nation states of Europe protesting with regressive nationalism, refusing collaboration by engaging in economic warfare while at the same time attempting rescue packages. The protest could be seen as defensive denial of their humbling at the hands of the over-ambitious aspects of the European single currency project and the demise of the potency of the nation state. The concluding section reflects on these issues and tries to distinguish the recycling of humiliation trauma from defence against the experience of being humbled."
