The rise of Asia, as well as the future of regional cooperation and integration (RCI) the world over, will be profoundly influenced by the challenges of slowing productivity growth, increasing economic inequalities and systemic vulnerabilities. Such structural reform issues will require RCI policies that complement domestic policy reform. This unique book explains what drives the regional economic integration of nations and their contribution to national knowledge capital. It also lays out how such beneficial integration can generate broad-based, equitable wealth in Europe and Asia.Unique in the regional economic integration literature, this comprehensive book identifies the set of drivers of integration for productivity growth. Importantly, it describes and compares the experiences of the Baltic Sea Region with Asia's use of a set of institutionalized consensual knowledge and decision tools to drive inclusive and productive growth throughout a period dominated by the global economic crisis.Original and enlightening, Innovation Networks and the New Asian Regionalism will be vital reading for academics and researchers interested in regional integration and innovation. Policy makers and practitioners in regional development and economic geography will also find it to be an invaluable resource.

Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia

Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia

The authors of this book link productivity change, trade competitiveness, networks of interaction and cooperation and income growth in developing Asian countries with the complex evolutionary processes of economic development and international trade. They take an innovative approach to simulating the complex micro-dynamics of competitiveness in order to distinguish those trade-related microeconomic dynamics and institutional reforms vital to leading countries out of institutional and poverty traps.Real competitiveness changes in six countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand) are measured from 1991 to 2000 with detailed international export unit value comparisons, to detect structural changes towards technology and knowledge intensive goods in trade patterns. No significant structural change was detected in the six countries during that period. Evolutionary trade theory is presented in two models and is calibrated with transaction and trade data from West Bengal and Nepal. These reveal that lower transport costs - resulting from investment in transport and institutional reforms related to the investment and trade environment - result initially in small productivity differences that can be amplified in a non-linear evolutionary system and eventually lead to a spatial restructuring of the system, and to a structural change in the trade patterns. The models in this path-breaking book can be used to explore the impact of a variety of interventions and policies.Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia will be of interest to academics and researchers in Asian Studies, industrial economics, evolutionary economics and international business development. The book will also appeal to policy makers responsible for economic growth.
Atlas of Pelvic Floor Ultrasound

Atlas of Pelvic Floor Ultrasound

Pelvic ? oor ultrasound is often described as a niche investigation within obstetrics and gynecology and even within gynecological ultrasound. After reading this book, I am convinced that it should be a mainstream investi- tion taught to all fellows and subspecialty trainees. Nothing should be of more importance to obstetricians and gynecologists than the protection of the pelvic ? oor of their patients and effective treatment when disorders arise. These disorders cause more prolonged and disruptive misery to patients than many of the conditions that clog up the waiting list in obst- rical and gynecological departments. This book is more than an “atlas”; it is an education in the anatomy and dynamics of the lower urinary tract and pelvic ? oor and the investigation of disorders that occur, such as incontinence and prolapse. Ultrasound, despite its preeminence as an investigative tool in obstetrics and gyne- logy, has been slow to achieve such status in urogynecology, principally because the transvaginal ultrasound probe which is the standard tool in gynecologic scanning distorts the pelvic ? oor anatomy. This makes int- pretation of prolapse impossible. It was the realization that perineal or translabial ultrasound provided equally good and artefact-free information on bladder dynamics and the integrity of the pelvic ? oor that a change in attitude occurred.
Twin Roads to the New Millennium

Twin Roads to the New Millennium

Hans Peter Van Manen

First published in the run-up to the new millennium, van Manen's seminal study remains a unique and important source for understanding the spiritual and karmic background to the Anthroposophical Movement and Society, as founded around the work of the twentieth-century seer and scientist Rudolf Steiner. In his lectures on karma given in 1924, Steiner spoke of the principal Aristotelian and Platonic traditions - and the movements based on their thinking. Van Manen studies the streams of destiny connected to these groups, and elaborates upon Steiner's presentations - also tackling the apparent contradictions in the Karmic Relationships lecture series. The author discusses the background to these groupings of destiny, beginning with the cosmic Michael School in the life before birth. He throws light on many different esoteric aspects connected to anthroposophy, including the archetypal representations of thinking arising from the Middle Ages; the Arthurian and Grail movements; the mystery of 'Old' and 'Young' souls; the individuals identified as 'Seekers for Christ' and 'Servants of Michael', and the 'Shepherds' and 'Kings'. We are led to the point at which the two principal groups of souls incarnate and meet together on earth for the first time ever - an event which is to take place within the contemporary anthroposophical movement. In an inspiring conclusion, the author presents his thoughts on a great Whitsun happening at the end of the twentieth century, and expounds on the tasks of the new millennium and the future of anthroposophy.

Stahl's classic book on Thucydides, here in English for the first time, penetrates as few others to the Greek writer's deepest interests. Stahl reveals Thucydides' work as a study in the fallibility of human projections. Above all, Thucydides is shown as interested in tracking how optimistic plans lead to irremediable suffering in the field of foreign policy. For this new edition, the original has been revised and enlarged by two chapters which reflect the author's subsequent work.
Analysis of Being-There in Psychotherapy: Declarations of Love or True and Immediate Experience of Love?
After I have approached the topic of the analysis of being-there and of the development of our capacity to love from a more philosophical perspective in earlier works, now, I want to consider the whole issue from a psychotherapeutic point of view. Which practical meaning is hidden in the analysis of being-there, pursued by me, for the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients, and how and by what in the therapeutic situation can the capacity for love be fostered in both, patient and therapist, and develop further on and on? At first, I sketchily shall describe the development of my own philosophical thinking regarding the analysis of our being-there, thereupon state the anthropology developed by my analysis, then include more and more psychological aspects, this leading to a psychological theory of psychic disturbances, which I want to take appropriate psychotherapeutic action from. As indicated above, I always take a psychotherapeutic treatment as a mutual process, which in an ideal situation leads to a further development of their capacity to love for all involved.

Now in its fifth edition, Derivatives and Internal Models provides a comprehensive and thorough introduction to derivative pricing, risk management and portfolio optimization, covering all relevant topics with enough hands-on, depth of detail to enable readers to develop their own pricing and risk tools. The book provides insight into modern market risk quantification methods such as variance-covariance, historical simulation, Monte Carlo, hedge ratios, etc., including time series analysis and statistical concepts such as GARCH Models or Chi-Square-distributions. It shows how optimal trading decisions can be deduced once risk has been quantified by introducing risk-adjusted performance measures and a complete presentation of modern quantitative portfolio optimization. Furthermore, all the important modern derivatives and their pricing methods are presented; from basic discounted cash flow methods to Black-Scholes, binomial trees, differential equations, finite difference schemes, Monte Carlo methods, Martingales and Numeraires, terms structure models, etc. The fifth edition of this classic finance book has been comprehensively reviewed. New chapters/content cover multicurve bootstrapping, the valuation and hedging of credit default risk that is inherently incorporated in every derivative—both of which are direct and permanent consequences of the financial crises with a large impact on our understanding of modern derivative valuation. The book will be accompanied by downloadable Excel spread sheets, which demonstrate how the theoretical concepts explained in the book can be turned into valuable algorithms and applications and will serve as an excellent starting point for the reader’s own bespoke solutions for valuation and risk management systems.
Multimodal Imaging in Neurology

Multimodal Imaging in Neurology

The field of brain imaging is developing at a rapid pace and has greatly advanced the areas of cognitive and clinical neuroscience. The availability of neuroimaging techniques, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and magnetic source imaging (MSI) has brought about breakthroughs in neuroscience. To obtain comprehensive information about the activity of the human brain, different analytical approaches should be complemented. Thus, in "intermodal multimodality" imaging, great efforts have been made to combine the highest spatial resolution (MRI, fMRI) with the best temporal resolution (MEG or EEG). "Intramodal multimodality" imaging combines various functional MRI techniques (e.g., fMRI, DTI, and/or morphometric/volumetric analysis). The multimodal approach is conceptually based on the combination of different noninvasive functional neuroimaging tools, their registration and cointegration. In particular, the combination of imaging applications that map different functional systems is useful, such as fMRI as a technique for the localization of cortical function and DTI as a technique for mapping of white matter fiber bundles or tracts. This booklet gives an insight into the wide field of multimodal imaging with respect to concepts, data acquisition, and postprocessing. Examples for intermodal and intramodal multimodality imaging are also demonstrated.
