Hong Kong as a Global Metropolis

Hong Kong as a Global Metropolis

David R. Meyer

Cambridge University Press
2000
sidottu
Hong Kong has remained the global metropolis for Asia since its founding in the 1840s following the Opium Wars between Britain and China. David Meyer traces its vibrant history from the arrival of the foreign trading firms, when it was established as one of the leading Asian business centers, to its celebrated handover to China in 1997. Throughout this period, Hong Kong has been prominent as a pivotal meeting-place of the Chinese and foreign social networks of capital, and as such has been China’s window onto the world economy, dominating other financial centers such as Singapore and Tokyo. Looking into the future, the author presents an optimistic view of Hong Kong in the twenty-first century, challenging those who predict its decline under Chinese rule. This accessible and broad-ranging look at the story of Hong Kong’s success will interest anyone concerned with its past, present and future.

Hong Kong: Epilogue to an Empire by Jan Morris - one of the world's pre-eminent travel writers - depicts the city of Hong Kong in 1988, tragically suspended between a colonial past and the uncertainties of China's future.First published in 1988, Hong Kong is a portrait of the British Empire's last, most anachronistic outpost, as the countdown to the handover gathers momentum. Written with her trademark elegance and panache, Morris depicts a city tragically suspended between a colonial past and the uncertainties of China's future.'It is difficult to think of anyone who could recount this tale with such authority, elegance and sensitivity as Jan Morris ... Here, she portrays what has always been Britain's most adjective-defying colony ... Morris so clearly likes the place, but she is not sentimental, nor is she blind to Hong Kong's flaws; she is aware of rootlessness in the teeming energy.' TLS'The book captures the contradictions and mad terror of Hong Kong better than could a novel - it's a dramatic documentary ... ' Evening Standard'The definitive study.' Washington Post

Hong Kong Protest Leaders - Sick facts that Western countries do not know
Hong Kong protest activists have been proactively contacting foreign governments and foreign press, telling them how righteous they are and why Hong Kong and Chinese governments are wrong. However, many of their own videos, speech, posts, statistics, Hong Kong newspapers, interviews with Hong Kong locals, etc... showing protest leaders' misbehaviours, misleading actions and misconducts have never been presented to foreign governments or foreign press. Award-winning author, Selina Co, lived in both British colony Hong Kong and Hong Kong SAR of China for more than 10 years. She was graduated from a top university in Hong Kong and have Hong Kong citizenship (dual citizenship). Being currently in an overseas country, she found that foreigners are misunderstanding Hong Kong's situation. She would like to present facts about the protests, without interference by China or by protestors, and with no conflict of interest nor benefits from either side. Selina, native in Cantonese (Hong Kong spoken language) and fluent in English and Mandarin (Chinese language) has collected protest leaders' videos, speeches, their own Facebook posts, statistics from reliable sources, interviewed a number of Hong Kong locals and translated Hong Kong newspapers on related topics and how the Hong Kong community actually think about the movement. Sources are presented to you whereas possible so that you can verify them. This book also tell you about Hong Kong history and the background of Sino-British Joint Declaration: 'One country, two systems', from Hong Kong society before protests 2019-2020, how Hong Kong society was like after it returned to China and back to the time when Hong Kong was a British colony in the 1990s. Perhaps, you will find that this 'democratic movement' is just a scam .... P.S. This book on Hong Kong Protest Leaders has nothing to do with cybercrime. Selina only happens to be a cybercrime detective, graduated from a university in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Protest Leaders - Sick facts that Western countries do not know 2
Hong Kong democratic movements receive majority supports from Western countries, but not from the locals. Award-winning author and Hong Kong citizen (dual citizen) Selina Co tells you why.Do you know Hong Kong's pro-democracy politicians receive vast donations and financial benefits? What if they gain supports by lying about the benefits of independence? What if most of the news about police brutality are fake? Do you know the locally popular newspaper Apple Daily have been convicted for multiple defamation cases and have also been heavily funding pro-democracy protest leaders?Let us look at the human rights situation before the 2019-20 riots. We will also find out how Beijing 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre has impacted Hong Kong's 1989 umbrella movement and 2019 anti-government and pro-independence movements. What if imprisonment is considered as glory? What if more and more people advocate 'illegal righteousness' and killing policemen is considered heroic? Why does the financial hub need the new national security law?
Hong Kong Takes Flight

Hong Kong Takes Flight

John D. Wong

HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS

sidottu
Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong’s development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong’s economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Hong Kong has become a by-word for all that is modern and sparkling in Asia today. Yet tourist brochures still play with the old cliche of Hong Kong as a place where 'East meets West'. Images of so-called 'traditional' China, junks sailing Victoria Harbour or old women praying to gods in smoky temples, mingle with those portraying Hong Kong as a consumer and business paradise. This collection of essays attempts to transcend the old polarities. It looks at modern Hong Kong in all its splendour and diversity in the run-up to its re-absorption into Greater China in mid-97, through the mediums of film, food, architecture, rumours and slang. It explores the question of a distinct, modern Chinese identity in Hong Kong, and even when it explores the traditional stamping ground of the older anthropology in the New Territories it finds a dramatically changed context, in particular for women. This collection presents an intriguing insight into the process of transition from 'tradition' to 'modernity' in this Modern Chinese Metropolis.

Examining Hong Kong cinema from its inception in 1913 to the end of the colonial era, this work explains the key areas of production, market, film products and critical traditions. Hong Kong Cinema considers the different political formations of Hong Kong's culture as seen through the cinema, and deals with the historical, political, economic and cultural relations between Hong Kong cinema and other Chinese film industries on the mainland, as well as in Taiwan and South-East Asia. Discussion covers the concept of 'national cinema' in the context of Hong Kong's status as a quasi-nation with strong links to both the 'motherland' (China) and the 'coloniser' (Britain), and also argues that Hong Kong cinema is a national cinema only in an incomplete and ambiguous sense.

This book examines the British cultural engagement with Hong Kong in the second half of the twentieth century. It shows how the territory fit unusually within Britain’s decolonisation narratives and served as an occasional foil for examining Britain’s own culture during a period of perceived stagnation and decline.Drawing on a wide range of archival and published primary sources, Hong Kong and British culture, 1945–97 investigates such themes as Hong Kong as a site of unrestrained capitalism, modernisation, and good government, as well as an arena of male social and sexual opportunity. It also examines the ways in which Hong Kong Chinese embraced British culture, and the competing predictions that British observers made concerning the colony’s return to Chinese sovereignty. An epilogue considers the enduring legacy of British colonialism. This book will be essential reading for historians of Hong Kong, British decolonisation, and Britain’s culture of declinism.

Hong Kong in Revolt

Hong Kong is in turmoil, with a new generation of young and politically active citizens shaking the regime. From the Umbrella Movement in 2014 to the defeat of the Extradition Bill and beyond, the protestors' demands have become more radical, and their actions more drastic. Their bravery emboldened the labor movement and launched the first successful political strike in half a century, followed by the broadening of the democratic movement as a whole. The book also sets the new protest movements within the context of the colonization, revolution and modernization of China. Au Loong-Yu explores Hong Kong's unique position in this history and the reaction the protests have generated on the Mainland. But the new generation's aspiration goes far beyond the political. It is a generation that strongly associates itself with a Hong Kong identity, with inclusivity and openness. Looking deeper into the roots and intricacies of the movement, the role of 'Western Values' vs 'Communism' and 'Hong Kongness' vs 'Chineseness', the cultural and political battles are understood through a broader geopolitical history. For good or for bad, Hong Kong has become one of the battle fields of the great historic contest between the US, the UK and China.

This volume provides an overview of all aspects of Hong Kong English in a style designed for undergraduates and general readers. As a former British colony, Hong Kong used English as the language of government, law and education in the early days of colonial rule. Since the Handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997, it is no longer used as the primary language of government. However, the status of English has survived the decline of colonial rule, as English has become an international language which is indispensable for a service-oriented economy such as present-day Hong Kong. Its use is still widespread in legal contexts, and English is the medium of instruction in at least a quarter of secondary schools. Outwith the realm of education, English is important as a means of international communication in the fields of banking and finance, business, and in the tourism and hospitality industry. English is therefore integrated into Hong Kong life in various ways and this has resulted in a thriving and developing variety of English. This book describes English in Hong Kong as a linguistic phenomenon from the point of view of language structure, but also takes into account historical, socio-cultural and socio-political developments.

Hong Kong Documentary Film

Hong Kong Documentary Film

Ian Aitken; Michael Ingham

Edinburgh University Press

sidottu
This is a comprehensive study of the lost genre of Hong Kong documentary film. Does Hong Kong have a significant tradition in documentary filmmaking? Until recently, many film scholars believed not. Yet, when Ian Aitken and Michael Ingham challenged this assumption, they discovered a rich cinematic tradition, dating back to the 1890s. Under-researched and often forgotten, documentary film-making in Hong Kong includes a thriving independent documentary film movement, a large archive of documentaries made by the colonial film units, and a number of classic British Official Films. Case studies from all three categories are examined in this book, including The Battle of Shanghai, The Sea and the Sky, Rising Sun and The Hong Kong Case. In-depth discussion and analysis of more recent Hong Kong independent documentaries focuses on works such as Cheung King-wai's KJ: A Life in Music and films by Tammy Cheung and Evans Chan. With a particular focus on how these films address the historico-political dimension of their time, Hong Kong Documentary Film introduces students and scholars in Film Studies to this fascinating and largely unexplored cinematic tradition. It is based on original archival research. It explores the issue of colonial film-making. It explores the role of public service television documentary. It presents critical analysis of important films.

The issues surrounding Hong Kong's global position and international links grow increasingly complex by the day as the process of Hong Kong's transformation from a British colony to a Chinese Special Administration Region unfolds. This volume addresses a number of questions relating to this process. How international is Hong Kong? What are its global and international dimensions? How important are these dimensions to its continued success? How will these dimensions change, especially beyond the sphere of economics? Is Hong Kong's internationalization, defined in terms of its willingness to embrace international values and its capacity to maintain its international presence, at risk? These questions are presented as they pertain to the changing situation; relations between mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the positions of Australia, Canada and the United States on Hong Kong; internalization of international legal values; Americanization vs. Asianization; linkages to the world through Guangdong; strategies to emigrate overseas, cultural internationalization; media internationalization and universities within the global economy.
