Hudson Taylor was a pioneer missionary in China. Born in 1832 and died in 1905 in his adopted homeland. During his 51 years of service, his China Inland Mission established 20 mission stations, brought 849 missionaries to the field, trained some 700 Chinese workers, raised four million dollars by faith following George Mueller's example, and developed a witnessing Chinese church of 125,000. It has been said that at least 35,000 were his own converts and that he baptized some 50,000. His gift for inspiring people to give themselves to Christ wholeheartedly was amazing. Hudson Taylor is indeed the father of the modern Chinese church. This is the story of the missionary journey of Hudson Taylor as only he could tell it. You are holding in your hands a piece of history. It is the story of a people and a place when the gospel first began to take hold. As such it is an instructive historical narrative, yet it is much more. This story holds keys to the heart of a people. It holds keys for us today to the minds and hearts of China. Not knowing he had only three months to live, Hudson Taylor left for China one last time...his 11th trip there, leaving in February, 1905, and arriving in March. He went alone as his beloved second wife had passed on the year before. At the end, he had retired to his home in Changsha, the capital of Hunan. His daughter-in-law, Mrs. Howard Taylor, visited him as he was busy going over his homeland letters. One gasp and he was gone. Christians carried his body to Chinkiang where he was buried with his first wife Maria at the foot of green hills near the Yangtze River.

Thousands of years before Hendrik Hudson sailed his Half Moon up to modern day Albany in 1609, the glaciers that once blanketed the Hudson Valley retreated to the Arctic. What the ice left in its wake was a soil so rich that, in global satellite images taken today, the trench of its path still shows up as a jet black streak. Lured by this soil's fertility came the family farmers of the Hudson Valley, who, over time, learned to glean the finest products that the land could provide. Today the Hudson Valley is an area rich in history and art, antiques and architecture, charming towns, and farms that produce bountiful local produce. America's history comes alive here as does its beauty. Naturally, Hudson Valley restaurants boast outstanding chefs with a deep and growing commitment to supporting local agriculture. Hudson Valley farmers and artisans fill out the menus with sustainable raised produce, meats, poultry, eggs, cheese, wine and other fine foods. It's creative cuisine at its bestWith over 80 recipes for the home cook from the state's most celebrated eateries and showcasing full-color photos featuring mouth-watering dishes, famous chefs, and lots of local flavor, Hudson Valley Chef's Table is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The delicious dishes featured here are personal histories––stories of people and place. Each recipe, chef profile, and photo tells its part of the story and magic of the Hudson Valley.

Countless books have been published on the historical sites of the Hudson River Valley. But these books have focused over and over again on the best-known, best-preserved places. Every bit as valuable are dozens of other historical sites that haven’t fared as well. Many of these buildings are listed on the National Register of Historical Places, and a few are even National Historical Landmarks. But in spite of their significance, these structures have been allowed to decay, and in some cases, to disappear altogether. In an effort to raise awareness of their plight, Hudson Valley Ruins offers the reader a long-overdue glimpse at some of the region’s forgotten cultural treasures. In addition to great river estates, the book profiles sites more meaningful to everyday life in the Valley: churches and hotels, commercial and civic buildings, mills and train stations. Included are works by some of the most important names in American architectural history, such as Alexander Jackson Davis and Calvert Vaux. The book is divided into four parts that correspond to the upper, middle, maritime, and lower sections of the Hudson River Valley. Sites have been selected for their general historical and architectural significance, their relationship to important themes in the region’s history, their physical condition or “rustic” character, and their ability to demonstrate a particular threat still faced by historical buildings in the region. The Dutch Reformed Church at Newburgh tells the story of the Valley’s oldest religious group; the Luckey Platt department store in Poughkeepsie was for decades the “Leading Store of the Hudson Valley”; and the ruins of the West Point Foundry at Cold Spring are all that remain of what was once one of the river’s most important industries. Taken together, these places present a broad picture of the region’s past that is relevant to its present and future. This book was published with the generous support of Furthermore, a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund.
