Should I Be Tested for Cancer?

Should I Be Tested for Cancer?

H. Gilbert Welch

University of California Press
2006
pokkari
Getting tested to detect cancer early is one of the best ways to stay healthy - or is it? In this lively, carefully researched book, a nationally recognized expert on early cancer detection challenges one of medicine's most widely accepted beliefs: that the best defense against cancer is to always try to catch it early. Read this book and you will think twice about common cancer screening tests such as total body scans, mammograms, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests. Combining patient stories and solid data on common cancers, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch makes the case that testing healthy people for cancer is really a double-edged sword: while these tests may help, they often have surprisingly little effect and are sometimes even harmful. Bringing together a body of little-known medical research in an engaging and accessible style, he discusses in detail the pitfalls of screening tests, showing how they can miss some cancers, how they can lead to invasive, unnecessary treatments, and how they can distract doctors from other important issues. Welch's conclusions are powerful, counterintuitive, and disturbing: the early detection of cancer does not always save lives, it can be hard to know who really has early cancer, and there are some cancers better left undiscovered. "Should I Be Tested for Cancer?" is the only book to clearly and simply lay out the pros and cons of cancer testing for the general public. It is indispensable reading for the millions of Americans who repeatedly face screening tests and who want to make better-informed decisions about their own health care.

Katrina Simmons' Can I Be Honest is poignant and raw. The speaker of these poems draws us near with her vulnerable honesty and bears all as she tries to trace the breakdown and subsequent break-up of a long-term relationship. As her lover begins to grow absent, Simmons verse wells with yearning: "you don't notice the cravings in my eyes, / thirsty as the desert. / Quench me with your love. / Time ticks on, the chasm widens, / fault lines ripping into Grand Canyons."Even though she can't save the partnership, Simmons learns to untangle herself from the sticky "web of promises" broken, from the "distorted red horns" of guilt, and save herself. In this collection, Simmons gracefully moves between longer narrative lyrics and brief pieces that stun with their painfully clear vision. Transformation burns but Simmons' speaker rises with an inspiringly enduring self-love and independence: "No frills, no maintenance, no shimmer needed. / It's just me-" This book is a comfort. Prepare to be seen.

The inspiration for "CAN I BE" came about from our daily lives and the way that my siblings and I were raised. At an early age, our parents gave us the privilege of deciding our paths by homeschooling us and, supporting us in whatever we wanted to do or accomplish. When I told them that I wanted to be an Architect they found a way for me to start taking college courses at the age of 12 to pursue my passion. We were never told that we couldn't be something. The potential of our story to become a book wasn't even dreamt of until my mentor Dorian Bohler, realized the power that the message of our lifestyle conveyed. He helped my brother and me realize that before you reach your highest potential you must first help someone realize their own.So, over quarantine, we wrote and funded our first children's book, an inspiring story about a kid with big dreams. "CAN I BE?" is a story that reflects upon one's own experiences with realizing their potential. We believed that because of COVID and many other factors there was an unfortunate lack of aspiration and overall hope among youth in these uncertain times. We hoped that 'CAN I BE' could be a gift to our readers, by giving them a sense of purpose and a form of inspiration. Along with our book's positive message, 'CAN I BE' includes an activity section that encourages children to write in their books while answering thought-provoking questions. There's also a glossary with definitions of various words used throughout the book. We're sure that our book will be used as a motivational tool that will not only inspire children but will also guide them on their path own toward their dreams.
