The critical biography of a dynamic and under-represented figure who produced and starred in some of the most innovative works of her day.Ida Rubinstein (1883–1960) captivated Paris's dancers, composers, artists, and audiences from her time in the Ballets Russes in 1909 to her final performances in 1939. Trained in Russia as an actress and a dancer, her life spanned the artistic freedom of the Belle Époque through the ravages of World War I, the Depression, and finally World War II. This critical biography carefully examines aspects of Rubinstein's life and career that have previously received little attention. These include her early life in Russia, her writing about performance aesthetics, her curated approach to acting and dancing roles, and her encumbered position as a woman and a Jew. Rubinstein used her considerable fortune to produce dozens of plays, lyric creations, and ballets, making her one of the foremost producers of the first half of the twentieth century. Employing the greatest scenic artists, Léon Bakst and Alexander Benois; the distinguished composers Igor Stravinsky, Arthur Honegger, and Claude Debussy; celebrated writers including Paul Valéry and André Gide; and the brilliant choreographer Bronislava Nijinska, Rubinstein transformed twentieth-century theater and dance.

This book is a collection of stories that my wife Ida told me about events in her lifetime. We did not have her on a recording, but rather I would write down notes of what she told me and then I would enter that bit into the computer. This book is a collection of those little stories in which I tried to use her words and expressions using the local dialect. Because we have never met our grandson in person, we decided that if we put our memoirs in a book he would be able to have a feeling of connection to his grandparents. Hopefully by reading this book our grandson will appreciate the love his grandmother had for him. Ida was a very special lady who spent her lifetime serving others and sometimes doing without things she wanted or needed for herself. She was a perfect "mother person". Ida did not win any famous prizes; was not in the public eye, her name was not on any plaque or in the records of any organization so there is no public notice for her. Hopefully by doing this book, Ida will be remembered. Hopefully this book will preserve memories of Ida for her friends and relatives to enjoy for years to come.

An archival study of Ida Lupino’s work in film and television directing, writing, producing, and acting from the 1940s to the 1970s. Though her acting career is well known, Ida Lupino was, until very recently, either unknown or overlooked as an influential director. One of the few female directors in Classical Hollywood, Lupino was the only woman with membership in the Directors Guild of America between 1948 and 1971. Her films were about women without power in society and engaged with highly controversial topics despite Hollywood’s strict production code. Working in a male-dominated field, Lupino was forced to manage her public persona carefully, resisting attempts by the press to paint her solely as a dutiful wife and mother-a continual feminization-just so that she could continue directing. Filmmaker Alexandra Seros retells the story of Ida Lupino’s career, from actor to director, first in film, then in television, using archival materials from collections housed around the world. The result provides rich insights into three of Lupino’s independently directed films and a number of episodes from her vast television oeuvre. Seros contextualizes this analysis with discussions of gendered labor in the film industry, the rise of consumerism in the United States after World War II, and the expectations put on women in their family lives during the postwar era. Seros’s portrait of Lupino ultimately paints her life and career as an exemplar of collaborative auteurship.

A beautiful, honest portrait of loss and deep friendship told through the story of two iconic polar bears. Gus lives in a big park in the middle of an even bigger city, and he spends his days with Ida. Ida is right there. Always. Then one sad day, Gus learns that Ida is very sick, and she isn't going to get better. The friends help each other face the difficult news with whispers, sniffles, cuddles, and even laughs. Slowly Gus realizes that even after Ida is gone, she will still be with him--through the sounds of their city, and the memories that live in their favorite spots. Ida, Always is an exquisitely told story of two best friends--inspired by a real bear friendship--and a gentle, moving, needed reminder that loved ones lost will stay in our hearts, always.
