Bestiary: An Imaginary Menagerie is an art book organized within the framework of an A-Z alliterative alphabet with a preface and artist's notes. From the Preface: "Creating a bestiary or illustrated collection of real and imaginary animals is one of those ideas that simmered slowly for years on my imagination's back burner. Unexpectedly, it began bubbling again in November of 2015 as I came across some journal notes that sketched out the parameters of such a project. Pausing at a drawing of a unicorn, I began to wonder about our fascination with bestiaries. These colorful hybrids of letterforms and fanciful illustrations first appeared during the medieval era as artists were commissioned by nobility and wealthy merchants to interpret their na ve descriptions of strange creatures seen on their voyages to exotic lands. Yet, despite our greatly evolved knowledge of zoology since then, why does this timeless literary art form remain popular among the offerings of contemporary publishers? I propose that it does so because we have yet to fully understand the synthesis of our own evolving animal natures with the gifts of speech, writing and acumen. That said, I've always loved to draw animals and have featured them in many original works of art. However, most of my animals are not portrayed realistically; I prefer to imbue them with qualities that reflect our human fortes and foibles. Those bestiary illustrations in which the animals display such attributes were important inspirations for this book. They can be found in The Aberdeen Bestiary (1200 AD), The Northumberland Bestiary (1250-1260 AD) and The Tudor Bestiary (1520 AD). Among my favorite 20th century editions are: Jungle-Jangle by Peter Newell (1909) and The Bestiario Moderno made in 1968 by Domenico Gnoli. In designing BESTIARY: AN IMAGINARY MENAGERIE, I've framed each illustration with an alphabetical alliteration both for organizational purposes and simply because it was great fun to do My hope is that my efforts will complement the voluminous body of bestiaries throughout history that are tributes to the wonders of creation and to our human imagination...

Do you take your work home with you? Do you check your work e-mail and voice mail when you're not on the job? Are your closest friends at the office? Do you feel guilty when you're sick and can't go to work? Does time stand still during nonbusiness hours? If you answered "yes" to any or all of these questions then you -- like millions of other twenty-first-century Americans -- may be too emotionally invested in your job. In Married to the Job, clinical psychologist Ilene Philipson explores the idea of the overworked American from a startlingly new perspective. Rejecting the common view that people work solely to keep up with the Joneses and amass material goods, Philipson argues that the modern workplace has become our only outlet for generating feelings of self-worth. Without the praise, the paycheck, and the bonus, life outside the office can often seem flat, unrewarding, and thankless. With this groundbreaking book, Philipson offers brilliant strategies to help ward off the perils of workaholism. By providing keen insight into the ways we seek emotional fulfillment through our jobs, she shows us how we can earn back our lives.

Ilene Philipson's biography of Ethel Rosenberg, only the second woman in U.S. history to be executed for treason, is now available in paperback for the first time. "Contributes to women's history and biography and to radical history, particularly to our understanding of family, gender relations, and feminine identity of women radicals. . . . Ilene Philipson has produced a fascinating book"--Nancy Chodorow "Tells the story of Ethel . . . from a woman's point of view. . . . Philipson, whose literary style has the clean exactitude of a tracer bullet, has produced a heart-rending masterpiece. If you read only one book a year, make it this one."--Florence King, Newsday "[Ethel Rosenberg's] stoicism on the witness stand, her unflinching response to the guilty verdict and death sentence, and her seeming indifference to the ordeal of her two children shocked the nation. . . . Concerned with rehabilitating not only Ethel Rosenberg's name, but also her image, the author creates a moving portrait of a human and ordinary woman."--John Patrick Diggins, New York Times Book Review

In the United States, the question of women in the armed services has been continuously and hotly debated. Among feminists, two fundamentally differing views of women in the military have developed. Feminist antimilitarists tell us that militarism and patriarchy have together pressed women into second class citizenship. Meanwhile, feminist soldiers and their advocates regard martial service as women's right and responsibility and the ticket to first class citizenship. Citizenship Rites investigates what is at stake for women in these debates. Exploring the perspectives of both feminist antimilitarists and feminist soldiers, Ilene Feinman situates the current combat controversy within the context of the sea change in United States politics since the 1970s-from ERA debates over drafting women to recent representations of military women such as the film GI Jane. Drawing on congressional testimony, court cases, feminist and antiracist political discourse, and antimilitarist activism, Feinman addresses our pressing need for an analysis of women's increasing inclusion in the armed forces while providing a provocative investigation of what this changing role means for women and society alike.

When Senator Thomas Hart Benton, one of Missouri's first two senators, was expecting his second child in 1824, he hoped it would be a boy. Although he was graced instead with a girl, he named her Jessie and raised her more like a son than a nineteenth-century daughter. Senator Benton was the main influence in her life until 1841, when, at the age of seventeen, she married army explorer John Charles Fremont against her parents' wishes. Some degree of reconciliation occurred later, when Senator Benton promoted Fremont's famous explorations of the Great West. Jessie remained in Missouri with the couple's young daughter, Lily, during these explorations, but she later helped to write and edit reports of her husband's adventures, and these narratives spread the lure of the West to nineteenth-century America. In 1849, the Fremonts moved to California, and in 1850 Fremont followed in his father-in-law's footsteps to become one of California's first senators. In 1856, Fremont's anti-slavery position was instrumental in his being chosen as the Republican Party's first presidential nominee. Jessie served as a behind-the-scenes campaign manager for her husband's unsuccessful presidential bid. When Abraham Lincoln appointed Fremont as the commander of the Department of the West in 1861, Jessie served as his unofficial aide and closest adviser. After the Civil War, the Fremonts' financial situation took a down turn. Undaunted, Jessie supported the family by writing ""A Year of American Travel"" and ""Souvenirs of My Time"". Although Jessie lived her ambitions largely through her husband's career, she also made a name for herself as a writer and a firm opponent of slavery.

Anxious for Answers: The surprising truth about anxiety, and how you can master it for good!
Myth: Anxiety is a "disorder" - some "dysfunction" within you. Fact: Anxiety is a complex, largely misunderstood, and interconnected phenomenon (i.e., you're one small part). Anxiety is a serious challenge for many - perhaps you. But, sadly, the misconceptions about anxiety, i.e., it's a "sickness" within an individual - only exacerbates a tough, ongoing challenge for those who wrestle with it. But, a refreshing new understanding of anxiety offers the possibility of profound and positive changes for those willing to invest the time. Anxious for Answers, by psychotherapist "Dr. Ilene" S. Cohen, focuses on chronic anxiety (i.e., when you're constantly anxious for no obvious reason). Cohen's years of clinical practice with countless people revealed the importance of putting anxiety in its context. When you see anxiety as a "disorder", it's out of context. It's something within just you that needs to be fixed. When you see anxiety in context, you realize it's the result of interconnected forces, of which the individual is only one small part. The best news? You can actually make real changes in the duration and intensity of your anxiety. Anxious for Answers is grounded in Bowen Family Systems Theory, which, when internalized, allows people to view their anxiety through a different lens, and in turn, master it. Cohen's witnessed firsthand the many possibilities this "radical" approach offers: - Learn to "self-soothe" - finding the serenity within you. - Preserve your inner calm in the face of life's chaos. - Lead a less anxious, more conscious, and more intentional life. - Build better relationships and make better life decisions. - Train yourself to stop reacting to old childhood "programming". Anxiety may be a fact in your life, but with Anxious for Answers as your guide, you'll learn to better manage it while opening the door to a calmer, richer, and more fulfilling life.
