Jean-Marie Bytebier (1963) graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Gent in 1988. Together with artists such as Wim Delvoye (1965) he focuses mainly on the possibilities of how painting could be presented in order to understand our increasingly complicated postmodern society. In doing so he wants to seal the gap with conceptual art, as opposed to a previous generation of contemporary artists in Belgium, which followed the new German painting. Bytebier places the paintings in diptychs, triptychs and quadriptychs. Bringing together various small paintings influencing one another was one of his first steps to question the complete painting. There was no univocal answer, but different possibilities.

This book critically discusses and systematically compares J.M. Keynes and F. H. Knight, two giants in the history of economic thought. In 1921 they both published apparently similar books on risk, probability, and uncertainty. However, while Knight's contribution on risk and uncertainty is now well recognized, Keynes's work on probability and uncertainty has been somewhat ignored in the shadow of his more famous The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936). Focusing on an earlier yet equally important volume by Keynes, A Treatise on Probability (1921), this book sheds a light on his outstanding ideas and the lasting influence on his later works, including The General Theory. There are few books that systematically discuss Keynes and Knight, although there are remarkable comparisons between Keynes's concept of probability and uncertainty and Knight's distinction between a measurable risk and a non-measurable uncertainty. This timely book unifies Keynes and Knight into a new, comprehensive approach to a very complex human behavior

J.M.W. Turner: The 'Skies' Sketchbook
The 'Skies' Sketchbook presents a stunning and dramatic selection of sky studies from one of Britain's most influential and important artists. While weather and climate were longstanding interests for J.M.W. Turner, the dramatic consequences of the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, darkening skies and reddening sunsets around the world and turning 1816 into a 'year without a summer' surely caught his attention. Since the pages of this sketchbook are watermarked 1814, its more intensely-coloured studies may document these effects which lasted for more than a year. Most of the skies in the book were presumably observed in England, but a few may have been seen in Italy when Turner visited in 1819. Notably varied cloudy skies also appear in Turner's paintings at this period, especially in those arising from his journey to Germany and the Netherlands in 1817. This glorious edition of the sketchbook reproduces all these beautiful drawings in near-facsimile, with an illustrated introduction by Turner expert David Blayney Brown, exploring their background and impact.

William John Macquorn Rankine (1820-1872) is a major figure in the history of nineteenth-century science and engineering. As well as being a successful railway and hydraulic engineer, he was largely responsible for the establishment of 'engineering science' as the core of a new academic discipline separate from that of practical engineering. Beginning with his birth in Edinburgh in 1820 this book - the first full length biography of Rankine - traces his Scottish schooling, his engineering apprenticeship in Ireland, his early years as railway and hydraulic engineer in the 1840s, his emergence as a distinctive scientific voice in the 1850s, and his career as a university professor in Glasgow. It places his idiosyncratic formulation of thermodynamics in the context of Scottish common sense philosophy and the exigencies of heat engineering; and examines his role as the engineers' advocate of the new science of energy, and of a science of 'energetics', during the 1850s and 1860s. Through his role as a man of science and as an engineer, the book demonstrates how he laboured with local captains of Scottish industry in the business of power-engineering and shipbuilding, helping foster the philosophical reform of commerce and industry that was to underpin Britain's empire.
