In the era of the Woodstock Festival and the Stonewall Riots, 1969, Dewey Snodgress is in high school in Fort Worth, Texas. He might be far from many of the changes taking place in the world, but they still affect his life. For one, as his school's theater star, Dewey takes part in a production about a young gay man protesting the Vietnam War. During the play, he meets another uninhibited young actress, Lucretia "Lulu" Belton, and their performances are a hit, changing attitudes about the war—especially the attitude of Dewey's dad. It's also the year Dewey meets Jeep Brickthorn, the school's hippie and a local musician. They quickly become friends, and although Dewey tries to suppress it, they start to fall in love. Though he knows his father won't condone their relationship, Dewey can't resist his feelings for Jeep. The times are changing, and maybe the time has come for Dewey and Jeep to escape their repressive town for somewhere more open-minded. Somewhere they can pursue their interests in acting and music. Somewhere they'll have the freedom to be in love.

Christianity, LGBTQ Suicide, and the Souls of Queer Folk

While garnering the attention of professionals across disciplines, from medicine to public health to psychology, and frequently covered as a topic of public concern in the news media, the elevated occurrence of suicide attempts among LGBTQ persons has received little attention within the literature of theology and religious studies. This book fills that lacuna by addressing the role that religious, spiritual, and theological narratives play in shaping the souls of queer folk. Taking a narrative approach to qualitative interview material from LGBTQ individuals who survived their suicide attempts, Cody J. Sanders argues that theological narratives can operate violently upon the souls of LGBTQ people in ways that make life precarious and, at time, seem unlivable. The book critically addresses the violence of theological narratives upon queer souls, filling a crucial void in scholarship concerning the role of religion—specifically Christianity—in LGBTQ suicide. Ultimately, the author draws upon the interview material to move readers toward constructive methods of contributing to the resistance and resilience of queer souls in relation to soul violence, asking how we can intervene with practices of care in order to cultivate livability of life for queer people.

Written by a child sex trafficking survivor who is now a trained professional in the field - a rising star who will likely be a national presence in the growing cause to prevent child sex trafficking. This is NOT a memoir; rather, the author uses her story to help the reader understand how someone ends up in trafficking -- usually because of childhood trauma/abuse, etc. Author was recently appointed as the very first City of Phoenix (Arizona) Survivor Spokesperson for Child Sex Trafficking Prevention and she's won numerous awards for her efforts in prevention and advocacy.Child sex trafficking is a very hot topic nationally and internationally. Federal, state, and local governments are placing emphasis on research for prevention, identification and rehabilitation of victims. This book gets at the root causes of trafficking - what leads up to it - instead of focusing on a survivor story or how to help those already in it. The focus is to help adults--parents, coaches, teachers, counselors, or even someone at the grocery store-- recognize signs of abuse or vulnerability--and how to do something about it. How we can all intervene.Author is highly motivated to promote this book at her many speaking engagements.
