James wrote in an extraordinary time in history and to a unique people. Unlike Paul, who wrote primarily to congregations defined by Gentile believers, James wrote to a dispersed and persecuted fellowship of Hebrew Christians who would soon endure even more difficulty in the coming years. James's letter had a two-fold intent: 1) Encourage these new believers to remain strong in the face of increasing persecution. 2) Equip them to continue in the faith throughout eras of hardship. If the dispersed believers lived exemplary lives among unfamiliar people in new areas, they could be living witnesses to the reality of Jesus as the Hebrew Messiah. According to James, the way of God is accepting the reality of persecution and applying faith to each and every instance. This "holification" of suffering that had been modeled by Jesus could indeed provide excellent witness to the reality of their faith. As James "tells it like it is" he consistently offers paths to effective living that can only be accessed through a personal relationship with God. Michael D. McCullar is the executive pastor of Johns Creek Baptist Church, Alpharetta, Georgia. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, New Orleans Baptist Seminary, and Oxford Graduate School. He is the author of Sessions with James, Sessions with Corinthians, Sessions with Timothy & Titus, A Christian's Guide to Islam, and co-author of Building Blocks for Sunday School Growth and Sessions with Mark.

My mom always encouraged me to write a book. Before she went to heaven in 2019, I promised her that I would write one. Now, with this commentary on the book of James, I have completed my fourth book and have begun to work on my fifth. Lord willing, I will continue to write until my time on earth is finished. Dr. H. A. Ironside wrote regarding the biblical book of JAMES, "The theme of the Epistle of James is 'A Living Faith.' Paul deals justification before God, whereas James deals with justification before men, maintaining that righteous living and godly behavior accompany real faith.'" The book of James is a tremendous combination of he wisdom of Jesus Christ and the wisdom of Proverbs. James challenges us on how we should "live out" the great truths of God. Real life topics and issues are dealt with as they relate to God's Word. While our faith walk requires a great amount of growth of knowledge about the Bible, James encourages and exhorts us to not stop there. Accept his challenge today by beginning this vital study of this five-chapter book of God's Holy Word.

In the early days of the church, James taught a message of joyful endurance, resisting temptation, and putting into practice the truth of the word the church had received. This little book offered reflections on trials, sin, and desire; on the challenges of controlling speech in the context of community and the damage such uncontrolled speech can bring about; and on the dangers of wealth and autonomy. James holds up a picture of a community that seeks a life of purity, prayer, and patience. He confronts those who choose their own way over God's way and speaks words of judgment against those who oppress and steal from the poor. In contrast, this community of early Christians is one of wisdom, joy, and praise that seeks healing for those among them who suffer. At each step, James encourages these Christians to consider the two ways: the way of righteousness and the way of evil, and to choose the good. This ancient book offers wisdom for today as we too seek to live godly lives of prayer, purity, and care for one another in a world that seeks to pull us away from God.

These commentaries are designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means. The Introduction to each book gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting and purpose. Following a structural Analysis, the Commentary takes the book section by section, drawing out its main themes, and also comments on individual verses and problems of interpretation. Additional Notes provide fuller discussion of particular difficulties. In the new New Testament volumes, the commentary on each section of the text is structured under three headings: Context, Comment and Theology. The goal is to explain the true meaning of the Bible and make its message plain.JAMESThe letter of James has often been defined in terms of moral earnestness, repentance and consistent social action, leading many to argue that it is not theological. This separation between theology and practice, Douglas J. Moo observes, can all too easily lead people to read Scripture as a book to be analysed rather than a message to be obeyed - the very mindset against which James inveighs. Moo's exposition of these themes illuminates James's rich letter and its message for us today.

As leader of the Jerusalem church, what words of encouragement would James write to these persecuted Christians? Perhaps a little surprisingly, his key message was: faith works. Genuine belief inevitably transforms our speech, suffering, compassion for the poor, humility, prayers, priorities, and, frankly, every other aspect of life. In 5 chapters James introduces and briefly touches upon a whole variety of issues that concern the new believers. In a simple, forthright style he urges them to live out their faith, knowing that God's grace is sufficient for every trial and that there is a value and purpose to their suffering. James' own life illustrated this message. He had grown up with Jesus and was naturally sceptical about his brother's Messianic claims. But a post-resurrection encounter with Jesus revolutionised his life. He was transformed from a vocal critic into a key leader of the early church and prime mover in the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15).

Criminals in Hong Kong and China are often superstitiously religious. Ironically, both they and police officers worship the same folk god, Guan Gong, who represents righteousness But their religiosity has no moral consequences - what both groups are seeking is protection from their opponents.Unfortunately, some Asian Christians have a similar model of religiosity. They want God's protection and blessings, but they do not want God to affect how they live. James will have none of this. He is convinced that our devotion to God must be reflected in the way we live, and so he writes a letter that is full of sound, practical advice. He exhorts us to control our tongues, he speaks against greed, envy, and wrong desires, and he gives wise advice about enduring suffering, praying for ailing believers, and restoring believers who are tempted to depart from the truth. Using Asian applications, this commentary of James highlights the relevance the triune God has in all contexts of life. The Asia Bible Commentary Series empowers Christian believers in Asia to read the Bible from within their respective contexts. Holistic in its approach to the text, each exposition of the biblical books combines exegesis and application. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the Body of Christ in Asia by providing pastoral and contextual exposition of every book of the Bible.
