Arctic and Subarctic North America is particularly affected by climate change, where average temperatures are rising three times faster than the global average. Documenting the changing climate/environment of the north requires a structured knowledge of indicator taxa that reflect the effects of climate changes.Aleocharine beetles are a dominant group of forest insects, which are being used in many projects as indicators of environmental change. Many species are forest specialists restricted to certain microhabitats, some are generalists and others are open habitat specialists. They represent many ecological niches and, as such, are good indicators for many other species as well. The majority of Canadian aleocharine beetle species (about 600 spp.) has been studied and published by Jan Klimaszewski et al. (2018, 2020), mainly from southern, central, and western Canada, while the northern taxa remain poorly known and documented. The aim of the presentbook is to summarize the knowledge on this insect group in the Arctic and Subarctic North America and to provide a diagnostic and ecological tool for scientists studying and monitoring insects in northern Canada and Alaska. The book includes a review of the literature, information on 238 species and their habitats, taxonomic review, images, and identification tools.

Introduction to Shape Optimization

Introduction to Shape Optimization

Sokolowski Jan; Zolesio J-. P.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. KG
1992

This book presents modern functional analysis methods for the sensitivity analysis of some infinite-dimensional systems governed by partial differential equations. The main topics are treated in a general and systematic way. They include many classical applications such as the Signorini problem, the elastic-plastic torsion problem and the visco-elastic-plastic problem. The "material derivative" from which any kind of shape derivative of a cost functional can be derived is defined. New results about the wave equation and the unilateral problem are also included in this book, which is intended to serve as a basic reference work for the algorithmic approach to shape optimization problems.

Building upon the scope of its predecessor, Dairy Science and Technology, Second Edition offers the latest information on the efficient transformation of milk into high-quality products. It focuses on the principles of physical, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial transformations. The authors, highly regarded educators and researchers, divide the content of this book into four parts. Part I, Milk, discusses the chemistry, physics, and microbiology of milk. In addition to providing knowledge of milk properties, this section forms the basis for understanding what happens during processing, handling, and storage. Part II, Processes, illustrates the main unit operations used to manufacture milk products and highlights the influence certain product and process variables have on resulting products. In Part III, Products, the book integrates information on raw materials and processing as they relate to the manufacture of products. This section also explains the procedures necessary to ensure consumer safety, product quality, and process efficiency. Part IV, Cheese, describes the processes and transformations (physical, biochemical, and microbial) relating to the manufacture and ripening of cheese, starting with generic aspects and later discussing specific groups of cheeses. An important resource, Dairy Science and Technology, Second Edition provides a thorough understanding of milk’s composition and properties and the changes that occur in milk and its products during processing and storage.

Communities in rural America are a complex mixture of peoples and cultures, ranging from miners who have been laid off in West Virginia, to Laotian immigrants relocating in Kansas to work at a beef processing plant, to entrepreneurs drawing up plans for a world-class ski resort in California's Sierra Nevada. Rural Communities: Legacy and Change uses its unique Community Capitals framework to examine how America's diverse rural communities use their various capitals?natural, cultural, human, social, political, financial, and built?to address the modern challenges that face them. Each chapter opens with a case study of a community facing a particular challenge, and is followed by a comprehensive discussion of sociological concepts to be applied to understanding the case. This narrative, topical approach makes the book accessible and engaging for undergraduate students, while its integrative approach provides them with a framework for understanding rural society based on the concepts and explanations of social scienceThis fifth edition is updated throughout with 2013 census data and features new and expanded coverage of health and health care, food systems and alternatives, the effects of neoliberalism and globalization on rural communities, as well as an expanded resource and activity section at the end of each chapter.

The Athletic Skills Model offers an alternative to dominant talent development theories in the form of holistic broad-based movement education, focusing on health and wellbeing. It places the emphasis on ‘physical intelligence’ – including attributes such as agility, flexibility and stability – through adaptable and varied training programmes, creating a skilled athlete before introducing sport specialization. The book sets out the scientific underpinnings of the ASM before going on to offer practical guidance on the content of the programme, how to adapt and vary the programme, and how to apply the approach to different age groups and sports. The ASM’s application in the youth development programme at AFC Ajax is explored in depth, before a future of talent development with an emphasis on athletic, rather than sport-specific, expertise is imagined. The Athletic Skills Model introduces an important and timely challenge to conventional wisdom in talent development and is a fascinating read for any upper-level student or researcher interested in youth development, skill acquisition, motor learning or sports coaching, and any coaches wanting to refresh their approach to talent development.

Battery Management Systems: Accurate State-of-Charge Indication for Battery-Powered Applications describes the field of State-of-Charge (SoC) indication for rechargeable batteries. With the emergence of battery-powered devices accurately estimating the battery SoC, and even more important the remaining time of use, becomes more and more important. An overview of the state-of-the-art of SoC indication methods including available market solutions from leading semiconductor companies, e.g. Texas Instruments, Microchip, Maxim, is given in the first part of this book. Furthermore, a universal SoC indication system that enables 1% or better accuracy under all realistic user conditions is developed. A possible integration with a newly developed ultra-fast recharging algorithm is also described. The contents of this book builds further on the contents of the first volume in the Philips Research Book Series, Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling. Since the subject of battery SoC indication requires a number of disciplines, this book covers all important disciplines starting from (electro)chemistry to understand battery behaviour, via mathematics to enable modelling of the observed battery behaviour and measurement science to enable accurate measurement of battery variables and assessment of the overall accuracy, to electrical engineering to enable an efficient implementation of the developed SoC indication system. It will therefore serve as an important source of information for any person working in engineering and involved in battery management.
