Education is one of the most fundamental prerequisites to economic growth and social stability in the world. It is also one of the most inadequately realised goals of development, with the average education of global adults remaining essentially at primary levels. Advancing Global Education is the second in a series of volumes that explores prospects for human development-how development appears to be unfolding globally and locally, how we would like it to evolve, and how better to assure that we move it in desired directions. The first volume addressed the reduction of global poverty. The third will turn to the enhancement of global health. Advancing Global Education presents the most extensive set of forecasts of global education participation and attainment levels to date-providing and exploring a massive, multi-issue database and proposing a scenario for accelerating educational attainment throughout major world regions and 183 countries.

Janet Carr and Roberta Shepherd head up a new team of eminent authors for the second edition of this definitive text on neurological physiotherapy. In the first edition, the authors described a model of neurological rehabilitation for individuals with motor dysfunction based on scientific research in the areas of neuromuscular control, biomechanics, motor skill learning, and the link between cognition and action, together with developments in pathology and adaptation. The new edition continues to advance this model while identifying and incorporating the many advances that have occurred in the last decade in the understanding and treatment of adults with neurological conditions, whether caused by accident or disease. Among these advances is the knowledge that the brain retains a plastic potential to reorganize, even in old and/or lesioned brains, and that neural plasticity can be influenced by task-related mental and physical practice in a stimulating environment. There is also an increasing body of knowledge related to the musculoskeletal system's adaptability and the need to prevent length and stiffness- related changes in muscle contractility, together with loss of aerobic fitness and endurance. There is an expanding body of clinical research that appears to support the model provided here. The training guidelines outlined in Neurological Rehabilitation are based on biomechanical constructs and motor relearning research, applied to enhance brain reorganization and muscle contractility, and encourage functional recovery of the patient. It connects science and clinical practice enabling students and practitioners to develop their knowledge and use new clinical methods based on modern scientific understanding. All chapters have been revised, some with the collaboration of five specialists who are engaged in high level scientific research and clinical practice Biomechanical models are presented to provide a framework for action-specific training and exercise to improve performance Clinical guidelines are science- and evidence-based Emphasis is on new approaches to the delivery of neurological rehabilitation that increase the time spent in mental and physical activity, and the intensity of practice and exercise Up-to-date referencing

This insightful volume is a result of the authors' extensive professional experience both in direct counseling positions and as faculty members of the prestigious Northfield and Fountain Valley Centers for training teachers as counselors. Although emanating from a private school experience, the book is universally applicable in school settings. The principles and recommendations are highly sensitive to the contemporary educational environment and the needs of today's students. ChoiceThe Northfield-Fountain Valley Counseling Institutes, founded by faculty from the Harvard University Health Services, have developed a highly successful, widely respected, and proven program for training teachers as counselors. The Institutes are committed to helping teachers develop, improve, and broaden counseling skills--a process that expands their role as teachers and enhances their work wth students. The Institutes' creative and evocative program is, with modifications appropriate to the setting, applicable in all secondary schools. This insightful volume, written by faculty members themselves, brings together principles and concepts taught at the Institutes. The book is founded on principles that, when applied, expand the teacher's understanding of the counseling relationship as it properly relates to education. Counseling Students conveys a distinguished faculty's years of experience and a commitment to and enthusiasm for the views counseling as on on-going process in which the teacher, with professional objectivity and controlled empathy, interacts with students to help them understand concerns and emotions that may impede personal development or threaten academic progress. Counseling Students is a particularly valuable resource for teachers, guidance professionals, and administrators and will be an indispensable guide for strengthening counseling and in-service training programs for teachers.

This book explores systems-based, co-design, introducing a “Decision-Based, Co-Design” (DBCD) approach for the co-design of materials, products, and processes. In recent years there have been significant advances in modeling and simulation of material behavior, from the smallest atomic scale to the macro scale. However, the uncertainties associated with these approaches and models across different scales need to be addressed to enable decision-making resulting in designs that are robust, that is, relatively insensitive to uncertainties. An approach that facilitates co-design is needed across material, product design and manufacturing processes. This book describes a cloud-based platform to support decisions in the design of engineered systems (CB-PDSIDES), which feature an architecture that promotes co-design through the servitization of decision-making, knowledge capture and use templates that allow previous solutions to be reused. Placing the platform in the cloud aids masscollaboration and open innovation.A valuable reference resource reference on all areas related to the design of materials, products and processes, the book appeals to material scientists, design engineers and all those involved in the emerging interdisciplinary field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).
