Live Form

Live Form

Jenni Sorkin

Ceramics had a far-reaching impact in the second half of the twentieth century, as its artists worked through the same ideas regarding abstraction and form as those for other creative mediums. Live Form shines new light on the relation of ceramics to the artistic avant-garde by looking at the central role of women in the field: potters who popularized ceramics as they worked with or taught male counterparts like John Cage, Peter Voulkos, and Ken Price. Sorkin focuses on three Americans who promoted ceramics as an advanced artistic medium: Marguerite Wildenhain, a Bauhaus-trained potter and writer; Mary Caroline (M. C.) Richards, who renounced formalism at Black Mountain College to pursue new performative methods; and Susan Peterson, best known for her live throwing demonstrations on public television. Together, these women pioneered a hands-on teaching style and led educational and therapeutic activities for war veterans, students, the elderly, and many others. Far from being an isolated field, ceramics offered a sense of community and social engagement, which, Sorkin argues, crucially set the stage for later participatory forms of art and feminist collectivism.

The women of the Old Testament are brought to life afresh in this compelling and sensitive retelling of their stories in a feminist and Christian context. Williams both celebrates affirming texts and tackles the challenge of difficult ones. Her wide-ranging treatment of varied stories about very different women reveal the rich tapestry of interweaving texts about women contained in the Old Testament and the patriarchal agendas that shaped them. "Whilst they belong to a different time, culture and set of values, Williams draws out their evergenerative capacity to afford us insight for today's church and world" Katharine Dell, Fellow and Director of Studies in Theology, University of Cambridge "Some of these texts delight, some horrify, and some perplex, but under Williams careful tutelage we are challenged to reflect afresh on how it is these texts continue to address us today" David G. Firth, Lecturer in Old Testament and Director of Research, St John's College Nottingham.

The Kingdom of our God

The Kingdom of our God

SCM Press

The Book of Isaiah speaks in troubled times. Its message for God’s people Israel stretches across prosperity, loss, disaster and the beginnings of a fresh hope. It is rooted in the events of its time and conveys God’s message about how to be faithful people and how to be a part of God’s people in their time. As Christians try to serve the kingdom in our own time, the Book of Isaiah speaks to us of the need to seek God, to listen and to understand his word. This commentary seeks to explore some of these themes and reflections. It looks to create a space in which Christian readers can think and reflect about what God is calling us to now as we seek to serve the Kingdom of our God. Engaging with critical scholarship but designed to be accessible for those beginning formal theological study or Christians who want to go deeper in their understanding of the book, The Kingdom of Our God demonstrates that the words of the prophets can still speak to us today

Offering a thorough introduction to notions of gender in contemporary global literature, Global Literature and Gender uses postcolonial theories alongside theories of space and place, theories of globalization, and reference to the Posthuman and the Anthropocene as competing narratives of the contemporary. This book argues for the ongoing but very current significance of gender as an organizing category, while also revealing the fluidity and boundary defying nature of gender in twenty-first-century literature. Divided into three sections, looking at femininity, masculinity, and transgender, Jenni Ramone:Examines globalization’s uneasy relationship with theories which foreground gender and considers gender as a challenge to globalization;Analyses embodied labour, global travel, trade, and tourism;Discusses the ways in which globalization and masculinity are likewise at odds;Considers a diverse range of themes and genres, including pearl-diving, taxi driving, space travel, authorship, surrogacy, modern-day slavery, Afrofuturism, Objectophilia, Stigma, Dehumanisation, Passing, and romance tourism;Engages with a vast range of innovative contemporary works, including those by Akwaeke Emezi, Alain Mabanckou, Mieko Kawakami, Meera Syal, Helen Heath, Kei Miller, Deji Bryce Olukotun, jaye simpson, Hideki Noda, Dany Laferrière, Zadie Smith, Hanan Al-Shaykh, Teju Cole, Sherley Anne Williams, Helen Oyeyemi, and Arundhati Roy.Global Literature and Gender is an essential intervention for researchers and students of globalization, twenty-first-century literature, and gender.
Transforming Summary Justice

Transforming Summary Justice

Sweeping changes are being introduced into the lower-tier magistrates’ courts in England and Wales in efforts to modernise the system and speed up case processing. They concentrate on delivering prompt justice within a modern, efficient and technologically advanced system. But these transformations are fundamentally changing the way justice is delivered. This book analyses criminal court streamlining processes and argues that there are areas where due process protections are being undermined.Transforming Summary Justice reports empirical research carried out with lay magistrates and criminal justice professionals. Views and experiences drawn from magistrates are valuable because of the central role they perform in lower court justice. Further, magistrates provide a wider understanding of the context in which the lower criminal courts operate and enable a critical appraisal of this unique style of ‘lay justice’. This book is directed at students of criminology, criminal justice and socio-legal studies, who will find the debates stimulating and useful to engage with in contemporary analyses of criminal court justice. It will also be of interest to justice and legal professionals who are seeing swingeing alterations to the field in which they work. The book will have appeal in other common-law jurisdictions, where similar modifications to lower court justice are occurring, and also across Europe, where lay involvement in legal decision-making is being debated and becoming accepted practice.
