This study analyzes several passages in the Former Prophets (2 Sam 19:12-44; 2 Kgs 2:1-18; Judg 8:4-28) from a literary perspective, and argues that the text presents Transjordan as liminal in Israel’s history, a place from which Israel’s leaders return with inaugurated or renewed authority. It then traces the redactional development of Samuel-Kings that led to this literary symbolism, and proposes a hypothesis of continual updating and combination of texts, beginning early in Israel’s monarchy and continuing until the final formation of the Deuteronomistic History. Several source documents may be isolated, including three narratives of Saul’s rise, two distinct histories of David’s rise, and a court history that was subsequently revised with pro-Solomonic additions. These texts had been combined already in a Prophetic Record during the 9th c. B.C.E. (with A. F. Campbell), which was received as an integrated unit by the Deuteronomistic Historian. The symbolic geography of the Jordan River and Transjordan, which even extends into the New Testament, was therefore not the product of a deliberate theological formulation, but rather the accidental by-product of the contingency of textual redaction that had as its main goal the historical presentation of Israel’s life in the land.
This book tells the history of the Industrial Revolution through the lens of publishing. In Second Printing Revolution, Jeremy Norman traces the transition in book production technology from handicrafts to mass media with some of the earliest examples of publications employing each new process. From the mechanization of papermaking, printing, and illustration to typesetting and bookbinding, the book examines a quantum leap in the dissemination of knowledge comparable to the time of Gutenberg.

In this companion volume to Western Warfare, 1775-1882, Jeremy Black takes his analysis of modern warfare into the 20th century. A distinctive feature of the author's approach is the coverage of both land and naval warfare as well as conflict within the West and between Western and non-Western powers. Beginning with the British conquest of Egypt in 1882, Black goes on to examine the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Boer War, and the Balkan conflicts leading to world war in 1914. A revisionist account of the First World War is followed by a discussion of Western expansionism in the period to 1936. Chapters on the interwar years and the Second World War lead to a discussion of the retreat from empire and the advent of the Cold War. The narrative closes with the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and a discussion of the limitations of Western military technique, doctrine, and technology. Black offers a new and challenging interpretation of modern warfare that will be required reading not only for students of military history but for all those interested in the impact of war in the making of the modern world.

The Army relies on commercial rail carriers for off-post rail movements, but it currently has three business models for on-post rail operations: government owned, government operated; government owned, contractor operated; and privatized. In this report, the authors evaluate the three business models and determine whether greater reliance on commercial rail assets could meet Army rail needs at a lower cost.
How could the U.S. Army improve its distribution of heavy secondary items that account for a small proportion of the overall items but comprise the majority of the weight shipped? This report analyzes how the Army could leverage the scheduled-truck network of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution hubs to reduce wait time for customers while saving nearly $1 million monthly in shipping costs.
Biochemistry: A Short Course

Derived from the best-selling classic text originated by Lubert Stryer and continued by John Tymoczko and Jeremy Berg, Biochemistry: A Short Course focuses on the major topics taught in a one-semester biochemistry course. With its short chapters and relevant biological and clinical examples, this text shows biochemistry as a part of students' everyday lives. Offering the same signature writing style and physiological emphasis as the full-length text, this briefer book focuses on the major topics by eliminating details of enzyme mechanisms and organic chemistry, and by removing extraneous and advanced topics. Coverage is broken into short chapters for ease of use. Numerous examples and photos of biochemistry in action show students that biochemistry is part of everything they do and experience. Students learn a biochemical concept, then see how that concept is applied in the real world. Clinical Insights show how our understanding of biochemical concepts influences an aspect of a disease or its cure, and Biological Insights show how simple changes in biochemical processes can have dramatic effects. The Second Edition has been fully updated with coverage of recent developments in biochemistry and human health. New Metabolism in Context sections show how new information on the role of leptins in hunger and satiety has changed the way biochemists think about obesity and diabetes. In addition to diet and obesity, other Metabolism in Context features focus on metabolism and cancer, and metabolism and exercise. The Experimental Techniques chapters (available on the companion website) have also been updated and expanded, exploring important techniques used by biochemists in the past as well as new technologies with which biochemists make discoveries in present-day laboratories.
