Behind every hero is an unsung protector. Likewise, for every great leader there is a mentor and friend. He is the wind for that leader's sails and the navigator for his course. Such was Jonathan for David. Jonathan had everything going for him. He was the eldest son of the first king of Israel. He had wealth and power. Yet he saw in a younger man potential beyond anything he himself could be. He used his influence and prestige to help David become a great man, warrior and eventually king in his place. That was true friendship, even to the point of risking his life for that friendship. Jonathan wanted to honor his father, but he could not condone his father's actions. He wanted to honor his friendship with David, but that friendship constantly put him at odds with his father and his position as heir to the throne. Such was his conflict. Yet he was able to live his life with integrity. God had a plan. David was "a man after God's own heart." Through David's lineage would come God's ultimate plan, the Savior, Jesus. But just as David was God's man, so I believe Jonathan was God's man for God's man, and a friend, Closer Than Brothers

The Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards

The Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Steven M. Studebaker; Robert W. Caldwell Iii

Routledge

nidottu
While Jonathan Edwards scholars have increasingly recognized the central role that the Trinity played in his thought, no work brings together Edwards' central texts on the Trinity and interprets and applies them to contemporary theological issues. This book reveals how the doctrine of the Trinity transformed Edwards' ministry and how the Trinity can inform current evangelical thought, life, and ministry. Key primary texts, interpretation, and application of Edwards' trinitarian theology are all presented here. Part one features Edwards' chief trinitarian writings and provides an in-depth analysis on his doctrine. Part two sets Edwards' trinitarianism in historical context. Part three demonstrates how Edwards employed the Trinity in his sermons, in spiritual formation, and in other areas of doctrine.

Invisible Rivals

Invisible Rivals

A multidisciplinary view of how our competitive and cooperative natures make us human For centuries, people have argued about whether humans are moral animals—good or bad, cooperative or competitive, altruistic or selfish. The debates continue today, dressed up in the language of modern science. In this book, Jonathan R. Goodman makes the case for synthesizing the two sides. Drawing on insights from anthropology, evolutionary biology, and philosophy, he argues that rather than being fundamentally cooperative or competitive, we are capable of being both—and of exploiting each other when there is an opportunity to do so. The core of invisible rivalry is how we make ourselves and others believe that we are acting cooperatively even as we manipulate those around us for our own benefit. In confronting this collective tendency toward self-interest, Goodman says, we can make the fundamental first step in fixing the breakdown of trust in society. Consequently, we will be better able to combat the myriad issues we face today, including widespread inequality, misinformation in a new technological environment, and climate change.

It emphasizes modern statistical methods and data analysis with a decreased emphasis on classical hypothesis testing and probability. It presents a problem-solving approach to the analysis of real data sets and procedures for data collection, design, and interpretation. It covers statistics in the context of the scientific method for problem recognition, problem formulation, and problem solving. Concrete examples of statistical techniques and computer use give students a practical framework of business statistics in practice.

Mindful Investing

Mindful Investing

NEW WORLD LIBRARY

A no-stress investing strategy that combines mindfulness with personal finance In his two decades as a financial adviser, Jonathan K. DeYoe has seen countless investors make decisions driven by fear and wishful thinking. That mindset leads to costly mistakes, such as chasing "hot" stocks, buying when prices are high and selling when low, and racking up expensive transaction fees and taxes in the process. But there is good news: these mistakes are preventable. In Mindful Investing, DeYoe offers a solution: a comprehensive investment strategy that integrates Western behavioral finance with the Eastern discipline of mindfulness. Mindfulness involves cultivating a state of nonjudgmental awareness of one's emotions without becoming entangled in them. Practicing mindfulness allows investors to see life from a larger perspective and make financial decisions according to their long-term goals, not fleeting impulses. Mindful Investing is one of the few books to discuss both the mechanics and the psychology of investing. Key topics include: - Understanding how financial markets work (stocks, bonds, and more) - Building an investment portfolio appropriate for your age, income, and life goals - Assessing your tolerance for risk - Recognizing and overcoming cognitive biases that impair your financial judgment - Choosing investments that align with your core values (socially conscious investing) Most important, Mindful Investing provides simple, evidence-based methods that don't rely on technology, gimmicks, or constant portfolio maintenance. By paring things down to their essentials, Mindful Investing takes the anxiety out of investing and shows readers the way to financial prosperity and personal well-being.
