The mental basis for this book began 72 years ago when I was age 17. I wrote and defined the "Great Beyond" as my future from age 17. I asked the question, "Who am I?" I traced through the years the Miller genealogy to Adam and Eve. I defined a Broad Mentality as having knowledge of: The Bible, (One is illiterate without a knowledge of the greatest book of all time.), God, Man, Salvation from death, The Church, The Lord's Day, God's Kingdom, The Last Things (end of the world.), Social Order, War, Religious Liberty, The Family, and Education. (Learn from study and experiences, and for professionals meet their qualifications (Doctors, lawyers, ministers, teachers, etc.) Famous people travel. I have circled the earth seven times, traveled to Japan 40 times, to Pearl Harbor 25 times. I have driven thousands of miles in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. "Study the world's culture." Learn the motto God gave us, "Faith, Hope, and Love". My life is working and learning. Young person plan your life "NOW " Thirty years in advance I planned a sabbatical every 10 years. I had three planned concurrent careers: Academic Neurosurgery, United States Naval Reserve, and founder of a Neuroscience Center with an interchange with 25 countries. I have performed 10,000 operations. God promises that learning will prolong your days. God will deliver and preserve His people for His Heavenly Kingdom. This book is for our family and friends. Our (Cathy and I) "Retirement Career" is at Top Speed, but I feel it slowing down. I have no more subjects in my mind to write about. I have authored 17 books. I am on the voluntary faculty at the medical school. I had Navy orders for 62 years (1952-2014). I was the first 80-year-old still drilling in the Navy Reserve. We are active members of the First Baptist Church of Brandon, Florida. Cathy and I have help with chores in and around our house. To God be the Glory.

Others

This volume fulfills the author's career-long reflections on radical otherness in literature. J. Hillis Miller investigates otherness through ten nineteenth- and twentieth-century authors: Friedrich Schlegel, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Joseph Conrad, W. B. Yeats, E. M. Forster, Marcel Proust, Paul de Man, and Jacques Derrida. From the exquisite close readings for which he is celebrated, Miller reaps a capacious understanding of otherness--one reachable not through theory but through literature itself. Otherness has wide valence in contemporary literary and cultural studies and is often understood as a misconception by hegemonic groups of subaltern ones. In a pleasing counter to this, Others conceives of otherness as something that inhabits sameness. Instances of the "wholly other" within the familiar include your sense of self or your beloved, your sense of your culture as such, or your experience of literary, theoretical, and philosophical works that belong to your own culture--works that are themselves haunted by otherness. Though Others begins and ends with chapters on theorists, the testimony they offer about otherness is not taken as more compelling than that of such literary works as Dicken's Our Mutual Friend, Conrad's "The Secret Sharer," Yeats's "Cold Heaven," or Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. Otherness, as this book finds it in the writers read, is not an abstract concept. It is an elusive feature of specific verbal constructs, different in each case. It can be glimpsed only through close readings that respect this diversity, as the plural in the title--Others--indicates. We perceive otherness in the way that the unseen--and the characters' emotional responses to it--ripples the conservative ideological surface of Howard's End. We sense it as chaos in Schlegel's radical concept of irony. And we gaze at it in the multiple personifications of Heart of Darkness. Each testifies in its own way to the richness and tangible weight of an otherness close at hand.

A History of Egypt: Volume 5, Under Roman Rule

Published in six volumes between 1894 and 1905, this collection served as a valuable reference work for students and scholars of Egyptology at a time when ongoing archaeological excavations were adding significantly to the understanding of one of the world's oldest civilisations. At the forefront of this research was Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853–1942), whose pioneering methods made Near Eastern archaeology a much more systematic and scientific discipline. Many of his other publications are also reissued in this series. Britain's first professor of Egyptology from 1892, Petrie was conscious of the fact that there was no textbook he could recommend to his students. The work of Weidemann was in German and out of date, so Petrie and his collaborators incorporated the latest theories and discoveries in this English-language resource. Volume 5 (1898), written by Joseph Grafton Milne (1867–1951), covers the period of Roman rule from 30 BCE to 642 CE.
