Film Genre for the Screenwriter
Film Genre for the Screenwriter is a practical study of how classic film genre components can be used in the construction of a screenplay. Based on Jule Selbo’s popular course, this accessible guide includes an examination of the historical origins of specific film genres, how and why these genres are received and appreciated by film-going audiences, and how the student and professional screenwriter alike can use the knowledge of film genre components in the ideation and execution of a screenplay. Explaining the defining elements, characteristics and tropes of genres from romantic comedy to slasher horror, and using examples from classic films like Casablanca alongside recent blockbuster franchises like Harry Potter, Selbo offers a compelling and readable analysis of film genre in its written form. The book also offers case studies, talking points and exercises to make its content approachable and applicable to readers and writers across the creative field.

A QUESTION OF CLOSURE One evening, in the autumn of 1963, Meg Hutchinson walked down a driveway in a small Connecticut town and was never seen again. Over the next thirty-five years her mother, her best friend and her fianc each developed ways to live with the unanswered questions and the perpetual anguish caused by her disappearance. But there was no way to fill or forget the hole torn in their lives. In the spring of 1998 her fianc returns to the town his haunted memory has made him avoid for all those years and once again asks those old, anguished and never answered questions. Then he discovers someone else who is obsessed by the memory of Meg Hutchinson: the man who took her life. But that man is protected by the passage of all those years and the corruption and injustice that lurks beneath the surface of the seemingly idyllic town. Meg's eighty year old mother and her fianc realize that closure can only come through justice, no matter how long delayed. They manipulate a diverse group of unsuspecting people into helping them achieve that ultimate closure.

VOYAGES IN DESPERATE TIMES A Novel by Jule A. Miller No times were more desperate for America, and for the world that depended upon her, than the first six months of 1942. If America had lost World War II the world would have sunk, in the words of Winston Churchill, "Into the abyss of a new Dark Age, made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science." And in the early months of 1942 America was definitely losing that war. The Nazis had overrun France and were at the gates of Moscow. The Japanese had crippled the U.S. fleet and were running wild in the Pacific. In January German U-boats sank thirty-one ships just off the east coast of the United States, many almost within sight of the beach. They sank sixty-eight in February and seventy in March. To lose the Battle of the Atlantic was to lose Britain, Russia, and the war. The Navy and Coast Guard were woefully short of vessels to fight the battle raging along the Eastern Sea Frontier. Having no other option, the government hastily commandeered yachts and sent them out into the north Atlantic to locate submarines and rescue survivors. The fifty-four foot schooner yacht Tiger Lillie instantly became Coast Guard Reserve Vessel 3114. The regulations required Ensign Nicholas Worth and his six man crew to take her out into the Atlantic that winter, but, as the old Coast Guard axiom says, the regulations did not require them to come back. Sixty-six years later, as she drives him to Vermont for the funeral of an old friend, his granddaughter asks Nick Worth what those times were like, and, after thinking about it, he answers with a single word, "Desperate". He had never before said even one word about his part in the Battle of the Atlantic or about how he had lost his leg. But now the old man realizes that the time has come to end his long silence about the voyages of The Fourteen Boat and explain to a later generation what life was like for those who were young in 1942.

What if it was possible for you to parent in a way that allowed your child to not only excel but be empowered to live a rich and rewarding life? Well thanks to recent advancements in brain science research the lid has been lifted and now every child has equal access and ability to achieve anything they set their minds to. As a parent you now have the opportunity to understand the true secret of success and happiness for both you and your child. This is not your typical book on how to parent. It is more a little treasure trove of information, tips and techniques on how to unleash the power of your child's brain to be extraordinary. The book is also a little different in that it is designed not only to assist your child to excel, but you as well. After all, it is you who are your child's guiding light and when you reach new heights in possibilities so can your child. This book is not age specific. It doesn't matter whether you have young children, teenagers or children who are grown up and living away from home, there is something in this book for you. Perhaps you are looking to give your child the best opportunity to live a rewarding and successful life, or to improve your relationship with them. Maybe you want to assist them to improve academically, have more confidence or just be happy. All of this and more will be covered in this book. I have also worked very hard to ensure that the brain science concepts covered in this book have been written in a style that is easy to understand and relate to. Nothing destroys the enjoyment of a good book if you struggle to understand what the author is trying to say. Also as a parent I am sure that your days are extremely busy and finding time to read is not always easy. With this in mind I have kept the book concise and to the point. No fillers but instead lots of interesting information, tips and techniques.

EU Non-Discrimination Law in the Courts

EU Non-Discrimination Law in the Courts

Since the year 2000, the material and personal scope of EU non-discrimination law has been significantly broadened and has challenged national courts to introduce a comprehensive equality framework into their national law to correspond with the European standard. The book provides a multi-layered culturally informed comparison of juridical approaches to EU (in)direct sex and sexualities discrimination and its implementation in Germany and the Netherlands. It examines how and why national courts apply national non-discrimination law with a European origin differently, although the legislation derives from the same set of EU law and the national courts have to respect the interpretive competence of the CJEU. The book provides valuable insights into the national and European context which shape the dialogue and influences of the courts inter se, the national application of EU law, and the harmonisation process within the area of gender equality law and beyond. A Dutch and German comparison is of special interest here because both countries’ approaches towards non-discrimination law are quite different despite the similarities in the respective legal systems; they are founding members of the EU, they are neighbours, they are civil law countries, and their legal systems are relatively similar at least compared to Scandinavian and common law jurisdictions. Therefore, the different reception EU non-discrimination law cannot simply be explained by obvious differences between the legal systems. Their comparison thus provides an interesting case study to uncover legal and non legal, cultural and historic, factors which influence the application of EU non-discrimination law in both countries. The book is of interest for EU, comparative and equality lawyers.

Popular culture has been falling in love with the idea that a man can become a woman, a woman a man, that there are no limits, and that the people who chose to "change sex" are pioneers rather than mentally ill. Like cheering on the alcoholic and buying him more drinks, we give transsexuals exactly what they ask for and they thank us. The problem with enabling this particular mental illness is that it has severe consequences. Every parent who thinks it is cute their child likes to cross-dress, or who believes they should not stand in the way of their child "finding himself," risks condemning that child to a life of infertility, expensive hormones, and dangerous surgery. Worse yet, they fix a permanent state of confusion in the child's mind, which poisons the child day and night, leading to increased substance abuse, anxiety, depression, and ultimately suicide. Dr. Miller offers a better way.
