A Globe and Mail Best Book of the Summer With biting wit, Aurora Stewart de Pe a satirizes the creative industry she's spent years in. From the people who brought you the invention of advertising comes Julius Julius, a rambling architectural wonder, outpost of the very first ad man of ancient Pompeii, built on the backs of generations of creative survivors who just want to lie on the floor of a conference room and cry about the lumber account without being sexually harassed. Welcome to the world's oldest advertising agency, where ghosts control the board room AC, an ancient executive assistant runs a cave full of thousand year old billboards, and there are bones in the walls. In a trio of voices from different time periods, we move through the mythical Agency, interrogating the process of stoking desire for a living. We meet the Senior Brand Anthropologist, who's being surprised by dirty bars of Irish Spring she can't remember buying, the Creative Director, whose ascent involved an ad campaign starring his dead best friend, and the Account Supervisor, whose only crime is not being a genius. (But the Fisherman Jack Tuna Campaign was her idea, despite what it says on the awards submissions.) Stewart de Pe a's debut novel reveals the cracks in the veneer of the creative industries, and the crisis of consciousness underneath in a novel full of compassion, humour, and blonde sausage dogs.

Julius Finn was born in Russian Poland, and came to New York in 1887 at the age of 16. From a humble start as a street peddler on the Lower East Side, Finn swiftly rose to become New York's champion chess master and one of the country's best blindfold chess entertainers. Finn's chess success contributed to the rise of the chess scene in the Big Apple in the early twentieth century, and he fared equally well in business, parlaying his skills into a highly successful career. Along with a foreword by John S. Hilbert, this biography of Finn in America includes analysis of 99 of his chess games-- most of them previously unknown or little studied--diagrams of game situations, and photographs.

German Impressionist artist Julius Seyler had already made a name for himself in Europe when America beckoned. While in St. Paul, Minnesota, he encountered Louis Hill, head of the Great Northern Railroad, who wanted to encourage travel to Montana's newly created Glacier National Park. To that end, Hill enticed the adventuresome Seyler to visit this majestic landscape and to see the Blackfeet Indians who lived there. This book marks both an appreciation of Seyler's unique art and a fascinating glimpse into the promotion of a national park in its early years.William E. Farr has written the first biographical portrait of Seyler, focusing on his two summers at Glacier in 1913 and 1914, his special relationship with the Blackfeet, and the magnificent art he created in the Northern Rockies. The book features more than one hundred images - many in color - including Seyler's major works from Glacier, other paintings from his European years, and historic photographs from the park.Seyler enjoyed wide recognition in Europe in his day, but the wartime destruction of his European works has since relegated him to obscurity. This lavish volume shows the stunning visual impact of his art and secures his place as one of the paramount portrayers of a place we still call the Crown of the Continent.

The Nazis put a remarkable amount of effort into anti-Semitic propaganda, intending to bring ordinary Germans around to the destructive ideology of the Nazi party. Julius Streicher (1885-1946) spearheaded many of these efforts, publishing anti-Semitic articles and cartoons in his weekly newspaper, Der Stürmer, the most widely read paper in the Third Reich. Streicher won the close personal friendship of Hitler and Himmler, and drew deserved attacks from the world press. Bytwerk's biography examines Streicher's use of propaganda techniques, and the hate literature towards Jews that continued to appear after his death, bearing his influence.

With vision, hard-nosed judgment, and biting humor, Julius Nyerere confronted the challenges of nation building in modern Africa. Constructing Tanzania out of a controversial Cold War union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Nyerere emerged as one of independent Africa's most influential leaders. He pursued his own brand of African socialism, called Ujamaa, with unquestioned integrity, and saw it profoundly influence movements to end white minority rule in Southern Africa. Yet his efforts to build a peaceful nation created a police state, economic crisis, and a war with Idi Amin's Uganda. Eventually—unlike most of his contemporaries—Nyerere retired voluntarily from power, paving the way for peaceful electoral transitions in Tanzania that continue today. Based on multinational archival research, extensive reading, and interviews with Nyerere's family and colleagues, as well as some who suffered under his rule, Paul Bjerk provides an incisive and accessible biography of this African leader of global importance. Recognizing Nyerere's commitment to participatory government and social equality while also confronting his authoritarian turns and policy failures, Bjerk offers a portrait of principled leadership under the difficult circumstances of postcolonial Africa.

Images range from Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House and Albert Frey’s Raymond Loewy House, to Paul R. Williams’ house for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra’s house, John Lautner’s house for Bob Hope, as well as other famous landmarks. The book features more than sixty buildings by fifteen of the most notable mid-twentieth-century architects. With a life and career spanning nearly a century, Julius Shulman is credited with furthering the midcentury modernist movement through his flawless photographs of the pioneering architecture of Richard Neutra and Charles Eames, among others. While Shulman's pictures comprise the most published images of the modernist movement, this monograph presents many neverbefore- seen images on a subject closest to Shulman's heart: Los Angeles and its environs-including Palm Springs and other suburbs. Shulman documents then-emerging areas like Century City, Wilshire Boulevard, and Echo Park, as well as landmarks like the Watts Towers and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Many of these Los Angeles buildings and neighborhoods have since been overhauled, torn down, or otherwise altered beyond recognition, making these images some of the only lasting testaments to their existence. Selected from his personal collection as well as his official archives, the photographs represent not only lesser-known and never-before-seen material, but also some of Shulman's own personal favorites.
Julius Caesar: The Civil War Books I & II
Julius Caesar's own narrative of the opening year of the Civil War between himself and Pompey is the only surviving account from the classical world of such a conflict written by one of the principals. The apparent clarity of the narrative, and the limpidity and economy of Caesar's style, in fact conceal a tendentious presentation of both his own and his opponent’s motives, actions and competence. The influence of dramatic structures on the selection and combination of events related by Caesar is also important. The commentary therefore aims to elucidate not only matters directly referred to in the text, but the whole context of their presentation. Latin text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary. First published in 1991, the paperback was reprinted with minor corrections in 2003.
Julius Caesar: The Civil War Book III
In the third and final book which he wrote about his campaigns in the Civil War, Julius Caesar tells the story of his fight with Pompey in 48 B.C. which ended in the rout of the latter at Pharsalus, perhaps Caesar's most notable military victory. The book ends with Caesar pursuing Pompey to Egypt. Here began Caesar's celebrated affair with Cleopatra. At this point the book, and the whole work, ends abruptly. J. M. Carter’s edition and commentary on Caesar's The Civil War Books I–III is the first complete commentary in English for a hundred years and is considerably more detailed than currently available annotated texts and translations in other languages. The main emphasis of the commentary is historical, but Caesar's literary technique is also scrutinised. The Latin text is newly constituted with a brief apparatus criticus. Latin text with facing-page English translation, introduction and commentary.

A fresh, contemporary translation of one of Shakespeare’s most dramatic and popular plays.Julius Caesar, Shakespeare’s famous Roman tragedy, chronicles the chaos leading up to the fateful murder of Caesar and the ensuing political fallout upon his death. Shishir Kurup’s translation updates Shakespeare’s language to allow more of the playwright’s ideas to come through; it opens the wonders and blazing relevance of the play’s rhetorical brilliance to the twenty-first century. This translation of Julius Caesar was written as part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Play On! project, which commissioned new translations of thirty-nine Shakespeare plays. These translations present the work of “The Bard” in language accessible to modern audiences while never losing the beauty of Shakespeare’s verse. Enlisting the talents of a diverse group of contemporary playwrights, screenwriters, and dramaturges from diverse backgrounds, this project reenvisions Shakespeare for the twenty-first century. These volumes make these works available for the first time in print—a new First Folio for a new era.

Francis W. Kelsey was Professor of Latin at the University of Michigan from 1889 until his death in 1927. His popular school commentary on Caesar's Gallic War appeared in twenty-one editions in his lifetime. The expanded edition revised and reprinted here first appeared in 1918. This new edition offers the intermediate/advanced Latin student everything he or she needs in order to be able to read Caesar's Gallic War: the complete Latin text of Books 1-5 and 6.11-24, a grammatical commentary, a Latin-English vocabulary, a Latin grammar cross-referenced to the usage of Caesar, and twelve colour maps illustrating Caesar's campaigns and battles. No other book provides such completeness or such depth in helping students to read Caesar's Latin with proficiency and confidence. from Preface by Rex Stem This project was undertaken for the simple reason that I wanted to have undergraduate students of Latin read widely from Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War and no commentary is in print from which I might do so. Commentaries on individual books of the Gallic War are available . . . but nothing that presents multiple books in their entirety for college level instruction. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I am bringing back into print the best of the older school commentaries on the Gallic War, namely that published in 1918 by Francis W. Kelsey. The excellence of Kelsey’s work is due to its rigor and completeness. Not only is the student presented with the complete text of over five (of the seven Caesarian) books of the Gallic War, but he or she also encounters a thorough grammatical (and sometimes historical) commentary, a complete Latin-English vocabulary for all the selections included, and an extensive Latin grammar keyed to the usage of Caesar (which also incorporates a description of the relevant geography and the military terms and practices of Caesar’s time). The intermediate to advanced Latin student in a contemporary college classroom thus finds herein all he or she needs to make rapid progress in accurately comprehending Caesar’s Latinity and narrative style. No other materials are needed.

This complete, line-by-line translation of Julius Caesar makes the language of Shakespeare's play contemporary while preserving the metrical rhythm, complexity, and poetic qualities of the original. The aim is to capture both sound and sense of Shakespeare's tragedy without the need for glosses or notes to use contemporary language without simplifying or modernizing the play in any other way. Readers experience Shakespeare's tale of the brutal assassination of Rome's most famous leader with the comprehension and delight of audiences 400 years ago, the way Shakespeare intended.Features "Too often, unless we read a Shakespeare play beforehand, we process the language as if it were coming from a poorly tuned-in radio station. Shakespeare didn't write his plays to be experienced impressionistically as 'poetry;' he assumed his language was readily comprehensible. At what point does a stage of a language become so different from the modern one as to make translation necessary? Mr. Richmond is brave enough to assert that, for Shakespeare, that time has come. The French have Moliere, the Russians have Chekhov and now, we can truly say that we have our Shakespeare."John McWhorter, Manhattan Institute Line-by-line, not prose paraphrases. Complete. No lines deleted. No dumbing down. Accurate and authentic iambic pentameter. True to the feel and look of Shakespeare's original. Tone, complexity, and poetic devices preserved. Subtlety and richness revealed without the need of notes and glosses. Accessible introduction to classic drama. Attractive, uncluttered, easy-to-read layout. Stage-ready for an audience-pleasing theatrical.
