Liturgical dance is a way to present, reflect, instruct, learn, study, and share religious beliefs with one's self, within one's worship community, and with one's God. Such a belief is confirmed and witnessed within a variety of religious settings throughout the world from the beginning of time to this present age. However, there is a vacuum of resources that connect liturgical dance within the Christian context as a tool for religious learning within the field of religious education. With the continual rise of liturgical dance as an artistic form of expression, this book proposes that liturgical dance offers unique attributes conducive to the teaching and learning of faith and to faith formation. Kathleen S. Turner shows how liturgical dance is religious education in two very important ways: first, by addressing the power and potential liturgical dance has in nourishing the faith life of Christian congregants through means that are both educative and reflective; and second, by giving examples of how liturgical dance can be implemented as a religious-education tool within the teaching life of the church.
Urban Mountain Beings is an ethnographic and historically-grounded study of recognition strategies and ethnogenesis in postneoliberal times carried out on the flanks of Mt. Pichincha in Quito, Ecuador. The author demonstrates through the application of feminist geographical and Indigenous pedagogical frameworks that it is not urban geography per se, but rather histories of exclusion that have created attitudes and policies treating Native peoples as “out of place” in cities. The book concentrates on two overlapping contexts for Indigenous vindication. The first is the Yumbada of Cotocollao, an ancestral performance through which mountain and other spirits are called into the urban plaza by danzantes of diverse backgrounds. The focus shifts to Yumbada dancers who are members of the Hummingbird Corporation, a legal entity founded by ex-hacienda workers and connected to Pueblo Kitu-Kara, the Indigenous political organization covering the Quito Basin region. Indigenous revindication activities of the “hummingbirds” include workshops, filmmaking, photography, classroom and community teaching plans, and the formation of alliances with local and international anthropologists, activists, filmmakers, engineers, and educators. Indigeneity is defined by this group less through biological and linguistic criteria than by public educational practices designed to confront gender inequity and violence, pernicious national racism, and environmental degradation.

When congregations go through difficult times, worship will both reflect and influence those difficulties. The practice of worship itself can be a key part of the congregation's healing process. Teacher and consultant Kathleen Smith successfully demonstrates this truth in Stilling the Storm, a book for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the ways that worship intertwines with the life and health of a congregations. There are three main types of difficulty congregations can face: times of crisis, transition, and conflict. Smith considers their differences, similarities, and implications for worship, and explains the congregational dynamics that accompany such times and the roles that leaders play. She reviews basic principles of worship and the ways that unique moments and regular habits of worship shape the congregation. For each type of difficulty she suggests important themes for congregations and their worship planners. Smith explores the wide range of liturgical resources available for congregations going through difficult times and how those resources can best be shaped to fit the specific situation they are experiencing. A perceptive guide to the worship we offer to God in all times and situation, Stilling the Storm is an important resource for all congregations of all worship traditions.
In A City of Marble, Kathleen Lamp argues that classical rhetorical theory shaped the Augustan cultural campaigns and that in turn the Augustan cultural campaigns functioned rhetorically to help Augustus gain and maintain power and to influence civic identity and participation in the Roman Principate (27 b. c. e.--14 c. e.).Lamp begins by studying rhetorical treatises, those texts most familiar to scholars of rhetoric, and moves on to those most obviously using rhetorical techniques in visual form. She then arrives at those objects least recognisable as rhetorical artefacts, but perhaps most significant to the daily lives of the Roman people--coins, altars, wall painting. This progression also captures the development of the Augustan political myth that Augustus was destined to rule and lead Rome to greatness as a descendant of the hero Aeneas.A City of Marble examines the establishment of this myth in state rhetoric, traces its circulation, and finally samples its popular receptions and adaptations. In doing so, Lamp inserts a long-excluded though significant audience--the common people of Rome--into contemporary understandings of rhetorical history and considers Augustan culture as significant in shaping civic identity, encouraging civic participation, and promoting social advancement.Lamp approaches the relationship between classical rhetoric and Augustan culture through a transdisciplinary methodology drawn from archaeology, art and architectural history, numismatics, classics, and rhetorical studies. By doing so, she grounds Dionysius of Halicarnassus's claims that the Principate represented a renaissance of rhetoric rooted in culture and a return to an Isocratean philosophical model of rhetoric, thus offering a counterstatement to the ""decline narrative"" that rhetorical practice withered in the early Roman Empire. Thus Lamp's work provides a step toward filling the disciplinary gap between Cicero and the Second Sophistic.

A different perspective on America's history as told by immigrants to the U.S. who left their home countries to pursue life, liberty, and a dream of happiness. Immigrants who have lived under varying degrees of socialism, communism, or dictatorships, and many of whom lived through conditions and horrors that most Americans thankfully will never experience. These are heartfelt stories from average men and women who do not take freedom for granted. This thought-provoking compilation was born of a desire to portray what these hope-filled people experienced, and illustrate what Dr. Kathleen S. Roos sees as deleterious actions of some in our own government for political power and not the betterment of the country or its people. Far beyond the rhetoric of blustery sound bites and agenda maneuvering, these simple, emotional stories illustrate the important human journey that accompanies each and every immigrant who reaches our county.Knowledge of these impactful stories will encourage readers to delve deeper into our history, and to stop believing everything they are told but rather to educate themselves about the promises and rhetoric made by both politicians and activists in this country today. As Country Singer/Song Writer John Rich and Commentator, Candace Owens state: "Experience outweighs your opinion."
