Nita Fire v. Rubino: Case File

Nita Fire v. Rubino: Case File

Louis M. Natali; Anthony J. Bocchino

Aspen Publishing
2019
nidottu
The plaintiff, Nita Fire and Casualty Company, brought this lawsuit to recover an amount paid to the defendant, Anthony J. Rubino, on a fire insurance policy on Rubino's business. Rubino was doing business as Rubino and Son, Dry Cleaners. A fire at the defendant's plant resulted in a total loss. The fire marshal determined that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion. Relying on the report of the fire marshal, the plaintiff paid the defendant's claim in the amount of $300,000.00. After paying the claim, the plaintiff learned from a former employee of the defendant that the fire possibly was caused by arson. After it conducted an independent investigation, the plaintiff decided that the fire was set deliberately. Rubino has denied the allegation of arson.
Black or Right

Black or Right

Louis M. Maraj

University Press of Colorado
2020
nidottu
Black or Right: Anti/Racist Campus Rhetorics explores notions of Blackness in white institutional—particularly educational—spaces. In it, Louis M. Maraj theorizes how Black identity operates with/against ideas of difference in the age of #BlackLivesMatter. Centering Blackness in frameworks for antiracist agency through interdisciplinary Black feminist lenses, Black or Right asks how those racially signifying “diversity” in US higher education (and beyond) make meaning in the everyday. Offering four Black rhetorics as antiracist means for rhetorical reclamation—autoethnography, hashtagging, inter(con)textual reading, and reconceptualized disruption—the book uses Black feminist relationality via an African indigenous approach. Maraj examines fluid, quotidian ways Black folk engage anti/racism at historically white institutions in the United States in response to violent campus spaces, educational structures, protest movements, and policy practice. Black or Right’s experimental, creative style strives to undiscipline knowledge from academic confinement. Exercising different vantage points in each chapter—autoethnographer, digital media scholar/pedagogue, cultural rhetorician, and critical discourse analyst—Maraj challenges readers to ecologically understand shifting, multiple meanings of Blackness in knowledge-making. Black or Right’s expressive form, organization, narratives, and poetics intimately interweave with its argument that Black folk must continuously invent “otherwise” in reiterative escape from oppressive white spaces. In centering Black experiences, Black theory, and diasporic Blackness, Black or Right mobilizes generative approaches to destabilizing institutional whiteness, as opposed to reparative attempts to “fix racism,” which often paradoxically center whiteness. It will be of interest to both academic and general readers and significant for specialists in cultural rhetorics, Black studies, and critical theory.
Papa's Christmas Stories

Papa's Christmas Stories

My wife, Karen and I, (Karen has passed away) had four children and 14 grandchildren. The birth of those grandchildren brought great joy to us and motivated me to create a story upon the birth of the first eight grandchildren, the first in 1986 and the last in 1998. Each chapter lists chronologically the names of these eight grandchildren. One of the stories was created as I was driving one night from a YMCA job interview in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Kokomo, Indiana, where I served as CEO. This book contains Christmas stories I created for children to enjoy. It begins with Santa's dog who gets lost and must be found so he can accompany Santa on his trip. Other unique characters are introduced, the Blue Angel, Miss Frilly Fox, a little boy named Bo who could fly, the walking trees, how snow began, the batmasters Desmo and his brother Rufus, the twin girls I and Y and many more. My grandchildren took great pleasure from reading their stories and I'm hoping to instill imaginative minds in others. Older children will enjoy reading the stories themselves and younger children having them read to them. The stories provide the children with something to think about. Many people said I should put these stories in a book, and so I did
Six Generations

Six Generations

Six generations represent only a short moment in the long history of human civilisation, but these Six Generations have brought more change in the way of life of the ordinary man and woman than came in the thousands of years before. From earliest times to the days of O'Connell, the speed of travel was no faster than that of a galloping horse; news of great events could take days even weeks to reach from one end of the country to another. This book describes the significant changes in everyday life - food, entertainment, household goods, working conditions, medicine, roads and communication - and what brought them about.Louis Cullen, who is lecturer in history at Trinity College, Dublin, based the material on original and pioneering research he has carried out over a number of years. The illustrations are drawn from a variety of sources including the National Gallery, the National Library, the London Illustrated News and from many locations all over Ireland. For the older generation this book will recall a way of life in the countryside which has virtually disappeared and for the younger generation it will illuminate what life was like while historic events such as the '98 rising, O'Connell's repeal movement, the Fenians and 1916 were being enacted. For both parents and pupils, this book will serve as a useful companion to the Telef s Scoile series of the same title.

After battling an alcohol addiction for years, Louis M. Cormier found purpose in exercising and solace on the Appalachian Trail. In From Addiction to Fitness you will walk with Louis as he overcomes his addiction and turns his life around to become healthy. Louis always enjoyed the outdoors and being a volunteer firefighter. But he also liked to drink. Things got so bad he crashed his truck and even contemplated suicide. He had to be hospitalized and go through detox. He hit rock bottom. That's when Louis turned to fitness to keep his mind from booze. Starting with some 5k runs, Louis pushed himself further to 10k and then marathons. Always one to set a high bar, Louis signed up for an Ironman Triathlons despite not knowing how to swim. He learned to swim and finished the race. Overcoming all odds has become a common theme in Cormier's life. After a few more triathlons, he decided to take on a greater challenge-hiking the 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail. It was on the trail that Louis found what he was made of. From Addiction to Fitness is a powerful memoir of overcoming and enduring and finding peace on the trail.

Learning About and Living With Racism In America
There is an old saying, "Curiosity kill the cat, satisfaction brought him back." My curiosity was killing me after I read an article by Earl Ofari Hutchinson. (2013) "Why So Many People Believe Blacks Are America's Racists". That conclusion was based on a Rasmussen (2013) telephone poll of 1000 respondents and noted "a significant percent of blacks . . . said they consider more blacks racist than whites or Hispanics". Of course, a multitude of questions about the survey crossed my mind. The topic peaked my curiosity and I decided to explore whether, based on my journey after arriving in America, I could qualify as a Racist. During that journey, I had to research the definitions of "racist", "racism", "bigot", and the behaviors, social and hereditary norms, laws, etc., that could contribute to anyone in America, with such a diverse population, to be a racist. In my pursuit of that knowledge, I learned about the personal beliefs, social rules, laws, regulations, and more importantly the insidious nature of and how it affects the everyday lives of the American landscape. My research lead to my journey of "Learning About and Living With Racism in America".
