Reading Capital

Reading Capital

Originally published in 1965, Reading Capital is a landmark of French thought and radical theory, reconstructing Western Marxism from its foundations. Louis Althusser, the French Marxist philosopher, maintained that Marx's project could only be revived if its scientific and revolutionary novelty was thoroughly divested of all traces of humanism, idealism, Hegelianism and historicism. In order to complete this critical rereading, Althusser and his students at the École normale supérieure ran a seminar on Capital, re-examining its arguments, strengths and weaknesses in detail, and it was out of those discussions that this book was born.Previously only available in English in highly abridged form, this edition, appearing fifty years after its original publication in France, restores chapters by Roger Establet, Pierre Macherey and Jacques Rancière. It includes a major new introduction by Étienne Balibar.

Louis Auguste Blanqui

Louis-Auguste Blanqui (1805-1881) was one of the most important and controversial figures in nineteenth-century French revolutionary politics, and he played a major role in all of the great upheavals that punctuated his life - the insurrections of 1830, 1848 and 1870-71. Adamant that a just and egalitarian society can only be established by revolutionary means, he recognised that no revolution can succeed if it fails to overcome the coercive resources of the state, and no revolutionary government can endure if it betrays the principles that alone earn and deserve mass support. At odds with followers of Proudhon on the one hand and of Marx on the other, while Blanqui commanded unrivalled authority in French revolutionary circles during parts of his own lifetime he was quickly forgotten (if not derided) after his death. This is the first collection of Blanqui's political writings ever published in English, and it includes new and complete translations of his best known texts: Instructions for an Armed Uprising, and Eternity by the Stars. With material drawn from all his main publications and speeches, as well as from the full sweep of his voluminous manuscripts and correspondence, this wide-ranging anthology will enable anglophone readers and political activists to arrive at their own critical assessment of Blanqui's thought and legacy for the first time.

When the First Edition of this book was written, there was a great deal of controversy about the role of direct skill instruction in teaching children to read. In the past five years, scientific research and studies of effective teaching practices have quelled the controversy. Today, except of a few holdouts, there is general consensus that in addition to varied language- and literature-based activities, reading instruction should include explicit and systematic instruction in the basic skills that help students become fluent, automatic readers. Across the country, policy-makers, educators, and publishers have begun to respond. The real challenge is how to implement what we know are the best research-based practices in reading materials adopted, in training teachers, and in school leadership. This Second Edition has grown out of the experiences of scores of dedicated teachers and their success in the classroom. It provides an updated overview of important research and instructional strategies that will bring all students to higher levels of literacy. Expanded sections on phonics instruction; connected practice with decodable text; fluency; multisyllabic word instruction; spelling; vocabulary and concept development; strategic reading; text organization; book discussions; and literacy benchmarks, assessment and intervention included. New tables are provided in Resource A. There are also revisions to the Frequently Asked Questions and the major points discussed in Resource B.
