French Canadians have a long, proud history of serving their nation. From the earliest beginnings, French Canadians assisted in carving out and defending the nascent country. They were critical as defenders and as allies against hostile Natives and competing European powers. In the aftermath of the conquest, they continued, albeit under a different flag, to defend Canada. Loyal Service examines the service of a number of French-Canadian leaders and their contributions to the nation during times of peace, crisis, and conflict spanning the entire historical spectrum from New France to the end of the twentieth century.

Various countries, peoples, languages, and cultures coexist in this world. Countries such as Canada and the United States that were created by immigrants can be seen as countries that have moved the world.Citizens of these immigrant countries communicate with one another through English, but they also have their own cultures, traditions, and languages that they use in their homes. We want children to recognize and acknowledge this from an early age to prevent discrimination in society based on race, culture, language, or any other reason.

Although this is a handbook for policy and regulation, the major part of it is filled with data on the three heavy metals that served as examples: mercury, cadmium and lead. Their stocks, productions, prices, trade flows, uses and applications, recovery and recycling, as well as their (eco)toxicological characteristics have been collected and presented to their fullest extent. In addition, they are thoroughly analysed for consistency, future developments and trends and, of course, their consequences for sustainable development and future policy and regulation. The second part, on policy and regulation, begins with an extensive and fundamental consideration on the characteristics of a sustainable heavy metals policy, whereby innovative policy tools are developed. In many aspects, these considerations are also valid for other metals and even non-metallic persistent substances. Addressing the European Union in particular, its policy-making structure and practice are critically analysed, in order to develop feasible and viable guidelines for long-, medium- and short-term EU policy measures. The results of this exercise are then applied to the three heavy metals. In each of these three chapters, all existing EU measures are presented in detail and confronted with better practices elsewhere, resulting in many suggestions and recommendations for the future. In the last chapter, the main conclusions and recommendations are carefully summarised. Together with a very extended table of contents, this makes the book easily accessible, in spite of its volume. This Handbook is a must for policy-makers and administrators at all levels, as well as for their counterparts in a wide variety of industries. In addition, it is well-suited for environmental science courses at academic or higher professional level.

Hiermit legen wir den zweiten Band der geplanten drei Teile der "Mathematik für Ökonomen" vor. Wie beim Band I über die Analysis von Funktionen einer Veränderlichen haben wir eine auf die besonderen Bedürfnisse des Studiums der Wirtschaftswissen schaft und der Unternehmensforschung ausgerichtete Darstellung der linearen Algebra gewählt. Dabei haben wir uns bemüht, die mathematische Theorie mit Anwendungen aus diesen beiden Dis ziplinen zu verbinden. Beim vorliegenden Stoffgebiet ist es sinnvoll, zunächst in den Abschnitten 1-6 die Grundlagen zu schaffen und die Anwendungen in den Abschnitten 7-9 zusammenhängend zu bringen. Infolge der rasch fortschreitenden Entwicklung der mathe matischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft und der Unternehmensfor schung können wir keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit der typi schen Modelle erheben, haben aber auf die Auswahl der Beispiele besondere Sorgfalt verwendet. Es hat sich als zweckmäßig erwiesen, die Ausführungen über die lineare Algebra vor die Behandlung der Funktionen mit mehre ren Veränderlichen zu stellen, für die nun der Band III vorgesehen ist. Zum Studium dieses Bandes sind aber keine Kenntnisse der Differential- und Integralrechnung notwendig. Der Inhalt des vorliegenden Bandes beruht auf Aufzeichnungen von Vorlesungen, die H.P. KÜNZI während mehrerer Jahre an der Universität Zürich gehalten hat. Die Abschnitte mit den ökono mischen Anwendungen stammen zum großen Teil aus Kursen von M. BEcKMANN, die an der Brown University, der Universität Bonn und der Technischen Universität München veranstaltet wurden. This milestone effectively marked the beginning of the digital entertainment era. In the years to follow, the CD-audio system became an astonishing worldwide success, and was followed by successful derivatives such as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, and recently Blu-ray Disc. Today, around the thirtieth anniversary of the milestone, it is taken for granted that media content is stored and distributed digitally, and the analog era seems long gone. This book retraces the origins of the CD system and the subsequent evolution of digital optical storage, with a focus on the contributions of Philips to this field.
