Der 1907 in Hamburg geborene Manfred Baron von Ardenne ist nicht nur aufgrund seines ungewöhnlichen Zugangs zur Wissenschaft und der Vielfalt seiner Interessen, sondern auch wegen seines unternehmerischen Talents eine Ausnahmeerscheinung in der deutschen Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Als erster realisierte er das vollelektronische Fernsehen, erfand das Rasterelektronenmikroskop und baute in den 1940er Jahren das leistungsfähigste "klassische" Elektronenmikroskop der Welt. Als Gefangener in Stalins "goldenem Käfig" schuf er die verfahrenstechnischen Grundlagen für die sowjetische Wasserstoffbombe. In der DDR baute er das einzige bedeutende private Forschungsinstitut des Ostblocks auf, das sich auf industrienahe Forschung im Bereich von Elektronen- und Ionenphysik konzentrierte. Anfang der 1960er Jahre wandte Ardenne sich medizinischen Fragestellungen zu und entwickelte seine "systemische Krebs-Mehrschritt-Therapie". Ein von Fragen und Thesen geleiteter Zugriff auf bislang nicht zugängliche Quellen erlaubt es, das "Phänomen Ardenne" als gelebte Vision vom unaufhaltsamen technischen Fortschritt zu beschreiben sowie als Selbstverwirklichung in Weltanschauungsdiktaturen zu begreifen. Die quellennahe Darstellung sowie Zurückhaltung im Urteil gewährleisten Authentizität und öffnen dem Leser Räume für eigene Bewertungen. Nicht zuletzt ermöglicht ein Vergleich der während mehrerer Jahrzehnte erschienenen Autobiographien mit der unveröffentlichten Urfassung, die Entwicklung des politischen Denkens Ardennes nachzuzeichnen, das ihn am Ende seines Lebens zu einem Aktivisten der friedlichen Revolution werden ließ.
