For a long time, Orthodox Christianity was regarded as a religious tradition that was incompatible with democracy. This book challenges this incompatibility thesis, offering an innovative and fresh theoretical framework for dealing with the issue of Orthodoxy and democracy. This book focuses on the political behaviour of Orthodox Christian Churches in the democratization processes from a comparative perspective, and shows that different Orthodox Churches acted differently in the democratization processes in Greece, Serbia and Russia. The fundamental question that arises is – why? By focusing on institutions, rather than on political theology, this book answers this question from a comparative perspective. By studying the historical, cultural, and political roles of the Orthodox Christian Church in these three countries, the author examines whether it is logical to presume that the Church played a significant role in the democratization process. This book will be of great interest to academics and students globally who teach, study, and research in the emerging field of religion and democracy.
Overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system are common occurrences. Yet most existing volumes on cumulative trauma disorders deal with the subject from an ergonomic and occupational therapy standpoint, and do not provide the all-encompassing synopsis that physicians demand.Overuse Injuries of the Musculoskeletal System, Second Edition, answers the need by presenting a complete overview of the methods for diagnosing and treating the overuse injuries that affect the musculoskeletal system as a whole. Each chapter includes the definition, origins, clinical picture and diagnostics, and treatment for the given injury. The book goes beyond diagnosis and treatment by identifying etiological factors and discussing ways to prevent overuse injuries. This new edition retains the successful systematic format that made the first edition a bestseller and an invaluable tool for orthopaedists, physical therapists, rheumatologists, radiologists and sports medicine practitioners. This version includes a new chapter on radiologic diagnosis, new chapter on overuse injuries in female athletes and supplements previously-existing chapters with new material.

Tourism, as with many parts of the economy, is at a pause-reflect-rest stage in the post pandemic world. This book puts forward some positive and practical concepts for the reset stage in terms of pushing towards wholly sustainable tourism. The COVID-19 pandemic has been disastrous in terms of the loss of human life, the physical and mental strains placed on large numbers of populations across the globe who have been quarantined in their homes and in terms of the costs of dealing with the pandemic and supporting business and citizens through the period. Tourism has been comprehensively damaged, not only in advanced economies, but also in poorer developing economies where tourism provides a vital source of income and employment. The problem has been complicated by the shattering effect on mass tourism, which has been far more sensitive to the shutdown of travel and accommodation than ethical and responsible tourism activities focused at a local sustainable level. Therefore this book evaluates how the pandemic and economic decline affects ethical and responsible tourism - the type of tourism which sustains and develops local communities in a balanced way for the benefit of future generations. It reflects on the position the authors established in "Ethical & Responsible Tourism - managing sustainability in local tourism destinations" and then determines how ethically and responsibly focused tourism may adapt, develop and maintain safety for consumers in the post-virus world. This book will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners of tourism, environmental and sustainability studies.

It is widely recognized that analytical technologies and techniques are playing a pioneering role in a range of today's foremost challenging scientific endeavours, including especially biological and biomedical research. Worthy of mention, for example, are the role that high performance separation techniques played in mapping the human genome and the pioneering work done within mass spectrometry. It is also apparent that state-of-the-art pharmaceutical and biomedical research is the major driving force of the development of new analytical techniques. Advancements in genomics research has provided the opportunity for a call for new drug targets for new technologies, which has speeded up drug discovery and helped to counteract the trend towards inflation of R&D costs. This book has been designed to be a reference covering a wide range of protein and genomic material analysis techniques. Emerging developments are presented with applications where relevant, and biological examples are included. It was developed to meet the ever growing need for a comprehensive and balanced text on an analytical technique which has generated a tremendous amount of interest in recent years. In addition, this book also serves as a modern textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in various disciplines including chemistry, biology and pharmacy. Authors of the individual chapters are recognized champions of their individual research disciplines and also represent contemporary major research centres in this field.
Today's complex software systems, such as Internet communications, e-commerce or virtual private networks all depend on distributed applications. Developers have to contend with diverse hardware platforms, remote communication over networks, and system failures. Fortunately, the Java language helps to reduce the complexity of distributed systems via its platform-independence and its built-in mechanisms for distributed programming. The first part of this book is a tutorial guide to distributed programming in the Java environment, showing how building blocks from threads to Jini can help developers to fulfil Sun's vision, that 'the Network is the Computer'. The second part focuses on aspects that are still challenging researchers: the integration of concurrency, distribution, and persistence. Highlights of the book include: * A clear tutorial introduction that focuses specifically on Java's role in building distributed applications. * Coverage includes threads & sockets, RMI, CORBA, Voyager, Mobile agents, JDBC, object-oriented databases, Java spaces and Jini. * Includes advanced chapters on the cutting edge of Java language development, including the author's own proposed Dejay (Distributed Java), an open-source project that offers a unified approach to concurrency, distribution and persistence. The book is aimed at developers wishing to deepen their knowledge of Java in distributed applications. Students taking courses on Distributed Systems/Objects will also find it invaluable, as will researchers on state-of the art developments in distributed Java.
The Shape of Populism examines socialist Serbia, then part of Yugoslavia, which in the late 1980s witnessed popular mobilization and an emergence of a populist discourse that both constructed and celebrated “the people.” Author Marko Grdešic uses quantitative and qualitative analyses to show how “the people” emerge in the public sphere. This book examines over 300 protests and analyzes them in conjunction with elite events such as party sessions. It examines over 1,600 letters-to-the-editor and political cartoons to reveal the populist construction of “the people.” Grdešic also relies on interviews with participants in populist rallies in the late 1980s to examine the long-term legacies of populism.
After arriving in America and blessed with a talent as yet undeveloped, Marko Lampas was drawn to an operatic career. Now, reflecting back upon his life, career and performances, he revisits his experiences and recalls how happily fate brought him in contact with Maria Callas, culminating in a relationship that combined both music and friendship. His autobiography tells it all.

Aristotle was the founder not only of logic but also of modal logic. In the Prior Analytics he developed a complex system of modal syllogistic which, while influential, has been disputed since antiquity—and is today widely regarded as incoherent. In this meticulously argued new study, Marko Malink presents a major reinterpretation of Aristotle’s modal syllogistic. Combining analytic rigor with keen sensitivity to historical context, he makes clear that the modal syllogistic forms a consistent, integrated system of logic, one that is closely related to other areas of Aristotle’s philosophy.Aristotle’s modal syllogistic differs significantly from modern modal logic. Malink considers the key to understanding the Aristotelian version to be the notion of predication discussed in the Topics—specifically, its theory of predicables (definition, genus, differentia, proprium, and accident) and the ten categories (substance, quantity, quality, and so on). The predicables introduce a distinction between essential and nonessential predication. In contrast, the categories distinguish between substantial and nonsubstantial predication. Malink builds on these insights in developing a semantics for Aristotle’s modal propositions, one that verifies the ancient philosopher’s claims of the validity and invalidity of modal inferences.Malink recognizes some limitations of this reconstruction, acknowledging that his proof of syllogistic consistency depends on introducing certain complexities that Aristotle could not have predicted. Nonetheless, Aristotle’s Modal Syllogistic brims with bold ideas, richly supported by close readings of the Greek texts, and offers a fresh perspective on the origins of modal logic.
