This insightful book examines the Black African diaspora in Britain through an examination of its demography, recent patterns of migration, changing patterns of residence, and socio-economic position. It provides an analysis of the areas where Black Africans face disadvantage, including labour market participation, housing markets, health and social care, and residence in deprived neighbourhoods. This original and important research also deals with categories and identities, using data collected in the 2011 Census on national identity, and the resulting investigation of the social, cultural and civic life of Black Africans presents the substantial heterogeneity concealed in the label 'Black African', concluding by highlighting the policy implications of this vital research.

The Real College Debt Crisis

The Real College Debt Crisis

Is it still worth it for low-income students to attend college, given the debt incurred? This book provides a new framework for evaluating the financial aid system in America, positing that aid must not only allow access to higher education, but also help students succeed in college and facilitate their financial health post-college.Higher education plays a critical role in the economy and society of the United States, creating a ladder of economic opportunity for American children, especially for those in poverty. Unfortunately, higher education today increasingly reinforces patterns of relative privilege, particularly as students without the benefit of affluent parents rely more and more on student loans to finance college access. This book presents penetrating new information about the fiscal realities of the current debt-based college loan system and raises tough questions about the extent to which student loans can be a viable way to facilitate equitable access to higher education. The book opens with relevant parts of the life stories of two students—one who grew up poor and had to take on high amounts of student debt, and another whose family could offer financial help at critical times. These real-life examples provide invaluable insight into the student debt problem and help make the complex data more understandable. A wide range of readers—from scholars of poverty, social policy, and educational equality to policymakers to practitioners in the fields of student financial aid and financial planning—will find the information in this text invaluable.

Group decision-making in the United States, including voting, is lower than in most developed countries. A big part of the problem is that people don't know the rules. This book, while addressing basic skills like reading and writing and advanced concepts like critical thinking, addresses that lack of training and participation. Designed for teachers of students in grades kindergarten through 12, it takes a progressive approach to mastering the cornerstone for democracy: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR). Many schools have Student Governments. An elite few generally participate. This book introduces universal participation. While a good end in itself, this book goes further. Through the mastery of the many components of RONR, it prepares students everywhere for meetings of almost all types, large and small. It's for training not just as students but for the rest of their lives. Robert's Rules for Kids and Big Kids points the way.

Educating the Top 100 Percent assesses the decline of higher education funding and offers ambitious policy recommendations to restore the possibility of accessible, affordable education for all.Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel J. Bray, and Martha J. Kanter probe the complex interplay of federal, state, and local policies and illustrate how government actions have, over time, contributed to the long-term slide of US educational attainment. Declining federal and state funding of public higher education has forced institutions to revise their financial models, passing costs directly through to students, to the detriment of prospective students—and the nation. Experts in education policy, the authors point out how the unintended consequences of today's funding model deny an ever-increasing portion of the population important educational and professional opportunities.By providing context for how we arrived at this financial conundrum and analyzing robust quantitative data from national sources, Katsinas and his colleagues offer pragmatic, sustainable, and stable policy options for educating all Americans. The authors provide innovative ideas, key lessons learned, and actionable proposals to fund public higher education. Their top-down federal and bottom-up local and state policy solutions aim to rectify plummeting high school-to-college continuation and college graduation rates. As a result, they present a vision of a brighter economic, cultural, and civic future for educating all Americans.Educating the Top 100 Percent demonstrates how stable, sustainable funding policies can scaffold a better public higher education system for all.

The Financial Obligation in International Law

The Financial Obligation in International Law

Rutsel Silvestre J Martha

Oxford University Press
2015
sidottu
This is the first volume to comprehensively and systematically study, describe, and theorize the financial obligation created and governed by public international law. Legal globalization has given rise to a number of financial issues in international law in areas as diverse as development financing, investment protection, compensation of human rights victims, and sovereign debt crises. The claims resulting from the proliferation of financial activity are not limited to those primarily involving financial obligation (e.g. loans and grants) but include secondary obligation resulting from the law on international responsibility. Among the many instances of financial obligation covered in this study, the reader will find inter-State financial transactions, inter-State sale of goods, transnational services such as telecommunications and post, the financial operations of multilateral institutions, loans, grants and guarantees provided by the various international financial institutions, certain financial relations between non-State actors (including natural persons) and States, intergovernmental organizations or other international legal actors, and government loans to international organizations. Rich in historical detail and systematic in its coverage of contemporary law, this book will be valued by all practitioners and scholars with an interest in the nature of international financial obligation.

Since the publication of the extremely well regarded first edition of this title, the legal regime which forms the basis for INTERPOL has changed significantly due to increasing criticism and calls for reform. This timely new edition provides a complete update to reflect the significant developments within the Organization since 2010. This new edition also examines INTERPOL’s internal and external law and situates INTERPOL’s assistance to its members in the legal regime of responsibility. It is the first text to undertake this task. It draws on the jurisprudence of the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files and the authors’ extensive experience before this body to discuss in great detail how an individual can challenge INTERPOL’s interventions (including the issuance of notices) on the basis of the Organization’s internal rules. It also meticulously describes the procedures under which INTERPOL members might challenge INTERPOL’s interventions and how an individual can hold INTERPOL responsible for breaches of its external law.Retaining the clarity of expression and expert analysis that were hallmarks of the first edition, this book is required reading for practitioners and academics alike. It provides academics with a valuable case study on the creation of an international organisation and the responsibility of international organisations, and it offers practitioners a forensic analysis of how to challenge INTERPOL and its actions.

Seattle was a very different city in 1960 than it is today. There were no black bus drivers, sales clerks, or bank tellers. Black children rarely attended the same schools as white children. And few black people lived outside of the Central District. In 1960, Seattle was effectively a segregated town.Energized by the national civil rights movement, an interracial group of Seattle residents joined together to form the Seattle chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Operational from 1961 through 1968, CORE had a brief but powerful effect on Seattle. The chapter began by challenging one of the more blatant forms of discrimination in the city, local supermarkets. Located within the black community and dependent on black customers, these supermarkets refused to hire black employees. CORE took the supermarkets to task by organizing hundreds of volunteers into shifts of continuous picketers until stores desegregated their staffs. From this initial effort CORE, in partnership with the NAACP and other groups, launched campaigns to increase employment and housing opportunities for black Seattleites, and to address racial inequalities in Seattle public schools. The members of Seattle CORE were committed to transforming Seattle into a more integrated and just society.Seattle was one of more than one hundred cities to support an active CORE chapter. Seattle in Black and White tells the local, Seattle story about this national movement. Authored by four active members of Seattle CORE, this book not only recounts the actions of Seattle CORE but, through their memories, also captures the emotion and intensity of this pivotal and highly charged time in America's history.A V Ethel Willis White BookFor more information visit: http://seattleinblackandwhite.org/
