At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Maurice M
Named one of the Ten Best Books of 2016 by the New York Times, a spirited account of a major intellectual movement of the twentieth century and the revolutionary thinkers who came to shape it, by the best-selling author of How to Live and Humanly Possible Sarah Bakewell. Paris, 1933: three contemporaries meet over apricot cocktails at the Bec-de-Gaz bar on the rue Montparnasse. They are the young Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and longtime friend Raymond Aron, a fellow philosopher who raves to them about a new conceptual framework from Berlin called Phenomenology. "You see," he says, "if you are a phenomenologist you can talk about this cocktail and make philosophy out of it " It was this simple phrase that would ignite a movement, inspiring Sartre to integrate Phenomenology into his own French, humanistic sensibility, thereby creating an entirely new philosophical approach inspired by themes of radical freedom, authentic being, and political activism. This movement would sweep through the jazz clubs and caf s of the Left Bank before making its way across the world as Existentialism. Featuring not only philosophers, but also playwrights, anthropologists, convicts, and revolutionaries, At the Existentialist Caf follows the existentialists' story, from the first rebellious spark through the Second World War, to its role in postwar liberation movements such as anti-colonialism, feminism, and gay rights. Interweaving biography and philosophy, it is the epic account of passionate encounters--fights, love affairs, mentorships, rebellions, and long partnerships--and a vital investigation into what the existentialists have to offer us today, at a moment when we are once again confronting the major questions of freedom, global responsibility, and human authenticity in a fractious and technology-driven world.

In November 2013, Martin O'Neill was appointed manager of the Republic of Ireland's national football team, with Roy Keane as his assistant manager. For Ireland, and for football itself, the coming together of these two legends is a dream combination. Martin O'Neill is one of the most brilliant, successful and intriguing of the new managers to emerge from British football. This new and revised edition of Simon Moss's acclaimed biography brings O'Neill's story right up to date, offering a rare insight into the beliefs, lifestyle and ambitions of this private and complex football man. A talented midfielder who played for Nottingham Forest and then Manchester City in between spells at Norwich, O'Neill captained Northern Ireland in the 1982 World Cup - the first Roman Catholic to do so - when his side reached the quarter-finals, famously beating the hosts, Spain, on the way. Ending his playing career in 1985, his managerial stock grew with the years; under his tutelage, Leicester City went from under-achieving first-division outfit to League Cup winners. However, it was at Celtic that O'Neill was to enjoy his most trophy-laden years, winning an unprecedented treble in his first season before narrowly missing out on UEFA Cup glory a year later. Having left Celtic, his 'spiritual home', to care for his wife as she battled cancer, he returned to football in 2006, first with Aston Villa and then, less happily, with Sunderland. Then came the call from Ireland - For any football fan, this is the definitive biography of the man known during his Celtic days as 'Martin the Magnificent'.

Martin O'Neill is one of British football's true greats. Plucked from Irish club Distillery by Nottingham Forest in 1971, the young Irishman went on an incredible football journey that saw him clash against some of the game's biggest characters. He twice won the European cup with Forest under the enigmatic Brian Clough - though the two never saw eye-to-eye. A talented midfielder, O'Neill played for Manchester City in between spells at Norwich before ending his playing career in 1985. As the first Roman Catholic captain of his country, O'Neill marshalled Northern Ireland's golden generation, who battled through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1982, picking up a famous win against hosts Spain on the way. But football was by no means the only path O'Neill could have taken. His has been a life of choice. Opting for football over Gaelic football as a youth, O'Neill was then forced to curtail a law degree at Queens University Belfast to make the switch to England, although his interest in criminology hasn't diminished. O'Neill cut his football management teeth at Grantham Town and Shepshed Dynamo, and his stock grew as he took Wycombe Wanderers from the GM Vauxhall Conference to the old Second Division in a matter of years. Under his tutelage, Leicester City went from under-achieving first division outfit to League Cup winners. However it was at Celtic that O'Neill would enjoy his most trophy-laden years, winning an unprecedented treble in his first year before narrowly missing out on UEFA Cup glory a year later. O'Neill would leave Celtic, his 'spiritual home', to care for his wife Geraldine as she was battling cancer. Returning to football in 2006, O'Neill undertook his first Premier League job, guiding Aston Villa to an impressive 6th place finish in only his second season in charge, and scoring a massive 71 goals in the process - a feat only bettered by Aston Villa's title winning side of 1981. His time at the club came to an adrupt end, however, as O'Neill severed ties with Aston Villa at the start of the 2010-11 season, three months after guiding the club to it's first final in over 10 years.

Five hundred years ago, a monk named Martin Luther wrote ninety-five questions, hoping to start a discussion about sin and repentance at the University of Wittenberg in Germany. In a few months those questions had stirred the nation; a few years later, the continent. Today we know that those questions changed the course of both the Western church and world history. In this volume for children, Simonetta Carr tells the compelling story of this father of the Protestant Reformation, tracing his quest for peace with God, his lifelong heroic stand for God's truth, and his family life and numerous accomplishments. The Reformer's greatest accomplishment, she writes, "has been his uncompromising emphasis on the free promise of the gospel."

From Nose to Tail is published on the occasion of Martin W hrl's (*1974) solo exhibition "Elephant in the Room" in the summer of 2020 at Kunstverein Ingolstadt, which focused primarily on his concrete works. The title, meanwhile, is a term used in the field of gastronomy and refers to the most complete processing of an animal, from the tenderloin and its innards to its tail. Martin W hrl uses this reference because he attaches the same value to all the component materials of his sculptures, and he also works with the remnants of his productions to create ever new combinations. The Munich-born artist constructs his sculptures by combining tangible set pieces of actual existing architecture, either sacred or profane in nature, in a manner that encourages dialogue--such as linoleum and brass. It occasionally appears as though he created dream images while his mind went woolgathering. Initially, however, in keeping with an aesthetic core belief in a minimalist approach to material, he opted for wood, concrete, and plaster; he piled up concrete cubes, placed frames on the wall, or positioned tubes and pipes within a space.

Warum kritisierte Luther Karlstadts Reformen in Wittenberg?

The Aston Martin Bulldog is a car that should never have existed. A car that was built before its time and became lost in time. A car that never failed to leave those who encountered it mesmerised by its aesthetics and its jaw-dropping capability. Aston Martin created Bulldog as a concept car in the late 1970s with the hope that it would go into production as the first road car capable of breaking the 200-mph barrier. They missed that speed due to lack of space and the car never entered production. Instead, the sole prototype, designed by William Towns, designer of the DBS and Lagonda, spent the next 40 years bouncing from one owner to another, gradually deteriorating in condition. That is, until 2019. Bought by American collector Phillip Sarofim, Bulldog was about to have one more shot at securing its place in the 200-mph club. Hundreds of never-seen-before photographs from the Aston Martin Archive, as well as new photography by experienced car photographer Amy Shore, chronicle the lifecycle of this incredible car. Including interviews with the original engineers who were involved in the restoration and speed record, Aston Martin Bulldog follows the full story, from concept and design, through the lost years and on to its recent resurrection, which saw it successfully break the 200-mph threshold in 2022.

Martin Buber’s I and Thou argues that humans engage with the world in two ways. One is with the attitude of an ‘I’ towards an ‘It’, where the self stands apart from objects as items of experience or use. The other is with the attitude of an ‘I’ towards a ‘Thou’, where the self enters into real relation with other people, or nature, or God. Addressing modern technological society, Buber claims that while the ‘I-It’ attitude is necessary for existence, human life finds its meaning in personal relationships of the ‘I-Thou’ sort. I and Thou is Buber’s masterpiece, the basis of his religious philosophy of dialogue, and among the most influential studies of the human condition in the 20th century.
