From children's books to Christmas pantomimes, and from scholarly anthologies to movies, the many and various adaptations of fairy tales in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries speak to the genre's widespread popularity. Narratives whose presence and appeal can be traced through every aspect of modern British and North American culture, fairy tales invite a range of interpretations and applications, as multiple versions of 'Cinderella,' 'Sleeping Beauty,' and 'Little Red Riding Hood' enable multiple and potentially subversive uses of their plots and motifs by writers and readers alike. By exploring representations of fairy tales in the works of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Djuna Barnes, Ann Martin's Red Riding Hood and the Wolf in Bed asserts the significance of the stories as a system of reference for these and other modernists. Allusions to fairy tales in works such as Ulysses, Orlando, and Nightwood signify not only an intersection of popular culture and high modernism, but also an interaction between modern subjects and their social and economic contexts. Drawing on theoretical paradigms from gender and cultural studies, Martin develops a participatory model of modernist literature and culture. The tactical engagements with social normatives that are found in fairy tales and in the modernist texts echo the authors' own challenges to formal and discursive boundaries through intertextuality, just as the readers of the fairy tale allusions become actively engaged in making sense of modernism.

Im Phänomen des Meßopfers liegt der Nerv eines Zeitalters offen, da es sich dabei um ein religiöses Ritual von großer Bedeutung für das Selbstverständnis und das Denken der spätmittelalterlichen Gesellschaft handelt. Deshalb lassen sich an seinem Beispiel Bruch und Kontinuität Martin Luthers mit dem Spätmittelalter beispielhaft illustrieren. Wolfgang Simon beleuchtet den theologischen und religionsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund des Meßopfers und zeigt, wie Luther sein eigenes Konzept von Sakrament und Opfer entwickelt hat.Warum nannte Luther das, was man allgemein als Opfer bezeichnet, "schlimmste Abgötterei"? Welche Auswirkungen hatte seine Meßtheologie auf das alltägliche Leben? Wie nahmen die Pfarrer und Prediger in den Städten seine Ideen auf und wie paßten sie diese ihren Bedürfnissen an? Warum kritisierte Luther Karlstadts Reformen in Wittenberg? Inwieweit war die Reformation ein von Luther angestoßenes Ereignis?Wolfgang Simon geht diesen Fragen nach und sucht dabei eine strikt historisch-diachrone mit einer systematisch-synchronen Methode zu verbinden. Er leistet einen Beitrag zur Mentalitätsgeschichte von Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit, zu einer Soziologie der Reformation, zur Diskussion um das Phänomen Reformation (insbesondere Luthers Verhältnis zur Reformation), zur systematischen Liturgiewissenschaft und zum Ökumenischen Dialog.Die selbständig lesbare Analyse von zentralen Einzelschriften der Theologie Martin Luthers, die Zusammenfassungen am Ende jedes Paragraphen und die Abschlußthesen sind geeignet, in grundlegende Zusammenhänge von Luthers Theologie einzuführen.Der Band wurde mit dem Staedtler Promotionspreis der Universität Erlangen 2001 und dem Martin-Luther-Preis für den akademischen Nachwuchs 2002 ausgezeichnet.

Ziel des Verfassers ist es, aus Luthers Grundschriften seine Theologie unter dem Gesichtspunkt ihrer Radikalitat zu erfassen, wie diese sich in seiner Argumentation gegen die Papstkirche und ihre Machtbastionen sowie in der Entwicklung reformatorischer Grundeinsichten manifestiert. Mit seiner Berufung auf den Freiheits- und Gleichheitsgedanken wie mit der Forderung der Wahlbarkeit und Absetzbarkeit von Autoritaten steht er am Anfang der demokratischen Bewegung in Deutschland. Zwar wollte er seine Einsichten vorwiegend im kirchlichen und theologischen Bezirk angewendet wissen, doch sie ubersprangen dessen Grenzen und bildeten Keime der kunftigen Demokratie. Sie inspirierten die Verfasser der amerikanischen Unabhangigkeitserklarung und fanden sich wieder als Parolen der Franzoesischen Revolution.
