Missiles for the Fatherland

Missiles for the Fatherland

Missiles for the Fatherland tells the story of the scientists and engineers who built the V-2 missile in Hitler's Germany. This text was the first scholarly history of the culture and society that underpinned missile development at Germany's secret missile base at Peenemünde. Using mainly primary source documents and publicly available oral history interviews, Michael Petersen examines the lives of the men and women who worked at Peenemünde and later at the underground slave labor complex called Mittelbau-Dora, where concentration camp prisoners mass-produced the V-2. His research reveals a complex interaction of professional ambition, internal cultural dynamics, military pressure, and political coercion, which coalesced in daily life at the facility. The interaction of these forces made the rapid development of the V-2 possible but also contributed to an environment in which stunning brutality could be committed against the concentration camp prisoners who manufactured the missile.

Based on the Senate Hearing transcripts, the British Inquiry and survivor accounts, Titanic Aftermath is told through the eyes of J. Bruce Ismay, president of the White Star Line at the time of the disaster. He is now near the end of his life in mental anguish over his role in the disaster after having spent twenty five years in seclusion. He is still unable to come to terms with his and White Star's culpability. His nights are spent in torment reliving the event and hearing the voices from the past. Enter the spirits of three who did not survive the disaster - an Officer of the Titanic, a First Class Woman Passenger, and a Third Class Woman Passenger. They visit him in his last desperate hours in order to confront him with the truths about his company's role in the tragedy and force him to relive that fateful night through the testimonials of the survivors.J. Bruce Ismay is taken on a sweeping journey towards absolution. Guided by the First Class Woman, the Third Class Woman, and the Officer, Ismay relives the heat of the Senate Hearings and British Inquiry. Ismay and company are taken to task on several of the mistruths, outright lies and overall whitewashing that came out of the hearings. Furthermore, he is forced to bear witness and relive the infamous night itself through the most personal stories of the survivors. His own inner journey involves coming to terms with his own deeply felt guilt and his continuing sorrow over the tragedy. With the help of the other characters, he slowly becomes aware of the great lessons to be learned from the tragedy. On another level, the play examines the role of huge corporations whose risk management decisions directly lead to the disaster. Many revelations are brought out in this highly researched play. We learn that Titanic was far from being state-of-the-art in safety features. The audience also discovers that the very corporations which owned the huge liners also controlled how the industry was regulated. Not surprisingly, they decided that profit and luxury trumped the need for complete safety. Obviously, this is a theme that unfortunately continues to resonate today.www.titanicaftermath.com

One of the main obstacles of authentic Christianity is the delusion that spiritual growth equals transformation. We become, and then make, disciples who still conform to the patterns of this world without being transformed by the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2). As Christians we need to be transformed with an ever-increasing capacity to develop a Christ consciousness, not just a Christ theology. We need to be discontent to live a life of spiritual smallness, satisfied to fill our "small containers" week after week without any desire to increase our capacity. This book was birthed in a market square in Tyre, 82 kilometres south of Beirut, Lebanon. It was the Day of Ashura, an annual event where Shia Muslims march through the streets of Beirut's southern suburbs commemorating the killing of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the prophet Muhammad in 680 AD. Although shoppers were doing business as usual there was a sense that security was on high alert. As Westerners we sensed the tension all the more. But it was not the presence of danger that gripped my heart, it was the absence of peace. My thoughts were still captured by the meetings we had the previous day with several Christian leaders from different regions in Syria. They were not refugees. For seven years they have faithfully ministered to the people of their regions through deep despair, severe suffering and extreme sacrifice. Though there were no words left to describe the destruction that millions endured, and are still living with, the message we heard was one of hope, not despair. Without exception the one message they all shared was simply: "THIS IS GOD'S TIME FOR SYRIA " My faith was challenged. Like the apostles I wanted to cry out "Lord, increase my faith " (Luke 17:5-6). I realised that the greatest - or one of the greatest - needs of our time is an increase in spiritual CAPACITY. The season we live in demands capacity building and capacity development like never before. NOT an increase in Biblical knowledge. NOT an increase in spiritual leadership. But lives of expanded capabilities to receive, absorb and contain as much of Christ as possible. And what we are able to absorb will eventually determine our output - that which we are able to give out or produce. The larger our capacity to be intimate with Christ, the more we will have the ability to reflect Christ and influence society. This is what this book is all about - a bigger-bottle-belief system to address the opportunities in a season of harvest
